The parish of Norton Canon was given to Hereford Cathedral by two sisters, Ulvine and Godiva, wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and is still owned by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. The church built on high ground and surrounded by green fields, was originally dedicated to St. Nicholas and later to St.Barnabas, is partly built in the Early English style in stone and brick. It was rebuilt in 1706 with later restorations. Our family of Samuel and Sarah Hancorn had their children baptised there and three children were buried in the churchyard. No tombstones survive. On 24th June 1995 there was a gathering of Hancorn descendants of Samuel and Sarah.
