He rebuilt not only the church (1773) but also the fort (c.1760) and the market house (c.1780) and planned a new Hillsborough Castle, which was completed after his death. He also managed the family's widely scattered estates and was Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1774, at a bad period of Anglo-American relations; he died on 7 October 1793 and was buried in the family vault beneath the south transept; he is commemorated in a fine marble bust in the porch, which was given to the church by the seventh Marquis in 1924.
