Straley Gravesite 1993

Note the DAR Flag and Metal Marker beside Christian Straley's grave. Some say that he is not the same Christian Straley that was in the American Revolution. I believe there at least 6 people who have joined the DAR on the facts submitted regarding Christian Straley's military service in the
American Revolution.

At the beginning of 2001,
the DAR marker was still there.

Dee Randall (me) in picture.

This is the same gravesite as above.
The farm is now owned by the "tube" plant and is
near the National Armory.

Christian and Christian Straley Items of Historical Interest
An Account Book
A Box
A Grandfather's Clock
A Gingerbread Receipe
A Diary

I have expressed interest in the above items
in order share with others who visit my site for information.

This is what I was told about three above items: the box, clock and receipe.
I was not inquiring about the Account Book to put onto the internet, as I recall,
but only if it was written in English vs. High German for readibility.

Account Book:

I was told:
The person who owns the account book gave a copy to the library.  She does
not want her name released on the internet.  However, it is written in
English and was kept after the family came to Harrison/Lewis County.

Box:

I was told:
The same person also owns the "box".  I told her about the desire to make a
picture available on the internet.  She does not authorize that and does
not want that to happen.

Gingerbread Receipe:

I was told:
The receipe for Christina Straley's gingerbread came from the same person.
It is a copy of a recipe written down by Blanche Hall Jackson
from the wife of Joseph Straley, Mary Shouldis.
Mary told Blanche that it was Christina's gingerbread recipe.
You have that already, I assume, from the Hacker's Creek Journal.
It was published in one of our early issues.

(I will not enter this receipe, but want you to know of its existence.)

Grandfather's Clock:

I was told:
As to the clock --- another 90+ year old family member still owns that.  I
feel certain she would not want her name in conjunction with it on the
internet and would not want her name released there.    I believe any who
are interested in this have probably already seen it in the HC Journal.
Yes, we do have photos of these in our collection at HCPD.  As a descendant
of Christian, you are welcome to purchase an excellent color copy of
these.  However, purchase of these does not authorize you or anyone to post
these on the internet on any website.  This is at the request of the owners
of the original items; they do not want them to appear there.  We could,
however, extend the courtesy of their use in a hardcover publication as
long as credit was given to HCPD; this, too, is at the owners' request.

Diary:

Christine White has her  mother's diary.

(I think this is the Straley Bible, so I am including it here.

The above email en toto can be found in an archival email dated January 20, 2001 in the WVLEWIS-L rootsweb list
by going to
http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and searching.
I have included above everything regarding the items that was written in the email , so far as I know.

STRALEY GENEALOGY RESEARCH

There are articles, papers, books and research and emails too numerous to reference here regarding the whereabouts of Christian Straley during the years 1777-1784.

Regarding Christian Straley's military service, there is supposition that one Christian Straley is paying taxes in two different locations, Pendleton County, (W)VA and Philadelphia County, PA, in about 4 overlapping years so therefore, there must be two Christian Straley's. I have not seen any law during that time that states that one could not pay taxes in two different places for the same years.

There has been the supposition that Christian Straley was a family man and he wouldn't leave his family and go off and fight a war.

It's possible that this matter will be cleared up later by other researchers. I have entered on a data base the whereabouts of Christian Straley all of his life thru facts from taxes, wills, births of children, and military records. Anyone wishing a copy of this, contact me. I have not collected copies of wills, marriage certificates, court records. You may find them in the archives of HCPD or abstracts of them in the rootsweb email archives.

There is much interesting genealogy information in the HCPD Library regarding the Straley family and the corollary families. You will have to go there to see this information, join the society and/or buy their journals. There may be other ways of accessing their information, but I wouldn't know how to do it now; I used to belong but no longer do.

You may want to subscribe to the rootsweb Straley list or the WVLEWIS County rootsweb list for queries. The HCPD does not have a list to subscribe to unless you join their historical society.

I have some Straley genealogy family history on my Family Tree Maker program that I will be glad to share, if you wish to contact me. However, I am not an active Straley family researcher and my genealogy is limited to my immediate Straley family.

I want to thank those who have gathered the Straley Family genealogy and provided me with my own history.
