John Ross, JR.
Private John Ross in Capt Andrew Swearingen's Company of
Westmoreland Co, Pa. Rangers on the Frontier in the Mexican War.
Marriage in Harrison Co, WV on May 1, 1764.
"The history of John Ross, one of the early settlers of
Green County, Pennsylvania. Told to me by my Grandmother, Rachel
Bowel Ross, widow of David Ross.
John Ross was born in Ireland.
His wife was a native of Wales: her name was Jane Ann James.
Three months after they landed in this country, they were married
in, or near, Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I do not remember the
exact date, but it was before the Revolutionary war.
They came to what is now Green County, Pennsylvania, on Dunkard
Creek: about four miles from the mouth they built a cabin and
cleared some land. Five children had been born to them.
There came word one evening that the Indians were camping,
killing and spreading destruction. They had two cows, and each of
them had a calf. They drove them deep into the woods. They had
two horses. They fastened a pannier, which was a kind of basket,
to either side of a saddle, put a small boy in each pouch and on
in the saddle. The mother was mounted on the other one with a
babe in her arms and a child behind her.
The one in her lap was her daughter, Hannah, who afterward
married James Shelby, and was the mother the Shelby family of
Green County, Pennsylvania.
No roads then, only a path through the woods. The father walked
beside his family with his dog and gun.
When they got to the river, near what is now Wolf's Cemetery,
they was the Indians dancing in a sugar camp just below them.
They went to a crossing about a mile below the mouth of Cheat
River, about half way between Dilliner's upper and lower ferries:
but the river had risen too high to ride it.
Grandfather swam one of his horses across the river to what is
now the Fayette county side of the Monongahela River. He found a
canoe, in which he ferried his family across, the other horse
swimming behind the canoe. They went to Fort Gaddis, ten miles in
Fayette county Pennsylvania.
The Indians passed then, but did them no harm. It was the month
of June. They sent out detachments of men to work the corn from
the Fort: the rest of the men standing guard around the fields
with guns.
So this is some of the trying times that my great grandparents
passed through.
They had a large family of children four of the children went to
what is now Harrison County, West Virginia. Grandfather owned a
large tract of land near Clarksburg, West Virginia. One son
married and lived in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He had a
son Robert. His grandsons, Robert and Carson, now own the old
homestead in Green County, Pennsylvania."
Birthdates and places are unknown, but the names of John Ross's
other children are: Robert, William, John, Mary, Enoch, Hannah,
Meshac, Sarah, Alexander, Isaac, David, and Jane. This
information was written by Owen Morgan Jones before his death in
1926.
