POW WOW
PICTURES
New Market, Shenandoah County,
Shenandoah Valley, VA

The powwow
was great, but my face is pretty disgusting.
I was probably telling John to get a digital camera and stop
wasting film.
This is New Market, also where a battle in New Market, Civil War,
was fought.
It was a colorful day - but hot!

Here come the
beautiful! |

There was a beautiful flute CD playing in the background. I asked the guy here in the picture if the CD had any snythesizer sounds on it and he said,"no." John was turning circles in the background hoping, I'm sure, that I wasn't going to buy yet another CD that had a synthesizer music on it and also hoping that I wasn't going to tell him my story about buying one after 'nother CD that didn't say "synthesizer" flutes when it did have electronic sounds. I asked him if it were for sale, and he said "yes." I said "where," and he pointed to the bin. I bought it and then asked him if he had ever heard of the flute player. He said, "Yes." Then reluctantly, "It's me." I wish you could have seen his eyes, they matched the blue in his shirt and they almost glowed. I asked him if I could take his picture and he said "Yes." John took one picture and it didn't happen. Then he kept on smiling for us. After I left I remembered I hadn't asked him what tribe he was from, and he answered beamingly, "Shawnee." Very few words, but lots of smiles. I tried to remember just how mean the books told me that the Shawnee were, but if they were mean, you couldn't prove it by me.
