"COMING
OVER THE MOUTAINS" |
| Names and relationships
mentioned in the below document: William Walton (living with Sarah Bramham on 1850 Louisa County, VA, census) William Walton's brothers, Robert E. and Neff William R. Walton (William Riley Walton) (listed as child, Wiliam, in the above census household) John Walton (son of William R. Walton)(the person giving testimony November 17, 1955 below) Pinkard Brannon (William R. Walton testifies that Pinkard's mother and his mother are sisters) Lizza Brannon (Pinkard's wife, Eliza Gibson Brannon) Malinda and Henry Brannon (Pinkard and Eliza's two children on the 1850 Louisa County Census (I originally thought that Pinkard had come earlier than the mid-1850's, but others say that he did come in the mid-1850's, but I am curious why his other children, Almira and Sophie are not with him, if he actually came in the mid-1850's.) Mary Gibson (This could be Mary Gibson, Eliza's and Nathan's sister,; however, Eliza's sister, Mary, at that time was married to Nathaniel Kennon and had several children.)(There is a grandaughter of Nathan Gibson, daughter of William Gibson, who was Mary Elizabeth Gibson, but she was also married to a William Butler, but I have no dates.) (Email me for the website URL for Kennon genealogy) Nathan Gibson & Family (This is Eliza Gibson's brother.) (I do not have his family's names. He would have been in his twenties at this time. Joe Walton, Sally Gentry, Pusie Hardsuch, Nellie (Siblings of William Riley Walton) Mr. Burton (Pinkard's daughter, Sophie, married a Burton. There were several Burton marriages in the family.) IMPORTANT:
I say this because I have heard the rumor that William Walton's father, William Walton {Sr.}, who came from England disowned his son, William Walton {Jr.} because he lived with an Indian woman. Dated: November 17, 1955. JOHN WALTON's (son of William Riley Walton) story of the Walton's, Family's nationality, of WILLIAM R. WALTON, his father, WILLIAM WALTON, {Sr.}thoroughbred Englishman came from London, England to live, settled on James River. He (William Walton {Sr.}) came with his (William Walton's two brothers) 2 bro Robert E and Neff and was a contractor in England and supervised the building of the James River Canal. He {William Walton. Sr.} owned a large plantation near the James River. He (William Walton {Jr.}) married a girl by the name of Brandum, (I think this is Bramham) now spelled Brannon, a white mull indian, (a few others interpret this as White Hall Indian. I have done extensive research and have never found a tribe called White Hall. There is a town in Virginia, called White Hall near Charlottesvile, VA.) a descendant of the Cherokee, a small slight woman and they (William Walton {Jr.}and Sarah Bramham) had 5 children, 1) William R. Walton, John's father 2) Joe Walton 3) Sally Gentry 4) Pusie Hardsuch 5) Nellie, do not know whether she married or not. They (William Walton {Jr.} kept from 40 to 60 slaves. I have found no indication on any Louisa County census that there were any slaves kept by William Walton and Sarah Bramham. There could have been slaves kept by a father of the William Walton{Jr.}. I haven't found any record yet.) They {{William Walton {Jr.} or Sr.?}raised cotton and tobacco and corn and he (William Riley Walton) left old Virginia when he was 15 and he (William Riley Walton) came with Pinkard Brannon and Family, Nathan Gibson & Family over the mts with team. Lizza Brannon and two children, Henry and Malinda, and Mary Gibson. Nathan stayed with the wagon, also Bill Walton. (I think this is William Riley Walton.) Pinkard Brannon came ahead and chose a place to locate on Big Cove and traded the team and wagon for a farm of a Mr. Burton's. (I'm pretty sure that Pinkard and his family stayed the winter in Jane Lew, Lewis County, WV, before he bought his property in Gilmer and Doddridge Counties.) Then Bill Walton (William Riley Walton) came to Smithburg and worked Copper Smith(Capt. or Copper?) on a farm later. Joosfue Reorcer near Rouinceo. (I can't read the underscored three previous proper names.) Then he (William Riley Walton) went to the War 4 years he fought at Bull Run. (I have tried to find papers of William Riley Walton's service in the Union or Confederacy, but have found no evidence of it. If anyone has this information, please let me know. Thanks.) |
Pinkard came from Virginia over the
"Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike"
from Trevillians which is a few miles east (on the R.R.) of
Gordonsville, VA. on this map
to a few miles north of Weston, (W) VA., before settling in
Gilmer/Doddridge County, (W)VA.
