OLD MITCHELL CEMETERY

Buried here is
Rev. John William Mitchell
and some of his relatives

The location of the cemetery is off I-79.

The pictures below were taken by Martha Bent Meistrell,.
which she provided to me for inclusion here
for the interest of relatives and genealogists.
A reading of this cemetery was also taken 12 April 1983 by Robert Smith of Lost Creek, WV.

I visited this site September 2, 2001.
Martha Bent Meistrell's mother's note in a bottle was still there.
The site seems quite deteriorated since the below pictures were taken, I believe only in May of this very same year, 2001.

I have added below two gravestone photographs of
OLIVER MITCHELL
Martha did not send previously, but I received some pictures from her yesterday,
September 19, which do include more gravestones.
I will look at them and post accordingly.
Thanks, Martha.

I. L. MITCHELL
CO. C.

CIVIL WAR (Infantry)

I believe this is Isaac L. Mitchell,
son of John William Mitchell
and Susannah Washburn Mitchell

Martha Bent Meistrall says "Female."
I can read "Church" on the largest stone.
If I had to guess, I would say that this might be one of
John Mitchell's wives, either Catherine Teter or Susannah Washburn for the reason it has a look similar to John William Mitchell's gravestone and has many words on it as does his gravestone.

INFANT
(Then there is a sculpture of maybe a lamb)
daughter of
D. C. & M.
MITCHELL
DIED
OCT. 17 1876

This is the daughter of
Draper C. and Martha Dbarr Mitchell

CATHERINE MITCHELL
(There is a sculpture of a book under her name)
DIED
March 5, 1870

Martha Bent Meistrell says that this reads
Catherine Mitchell

This could be Catherine Mitchell, 1810-1870,
who is the daughter of
Rev. John Mitchell and Susannah Washburn Mitchell
who was married to Phillip Petty.
However, there is no "Petty" on this tombstone.

Martha Bent Meistrell says that there is a gravestone for
D C MITCHELL
DIED
OCT 1 1878
AGED 2 10 D

But that she didn't see the picture when she was mailing them to me. Perhaps it will turn up.
I calculated his birth date to be November 21, 1876.

Martha Bent Meistrell shows a plot of the graveyard on which there is a gravestone for Oliver Mitchell.
She did not include the writing of the gravestone, nor the picture.
I include here a previous reading of the "Old Mitchell Cemetery" by Robert Smith which stated:
OLIVER MITCHELL
BORN
12 APRIL 1838
DIED
25 DECEMBER 1844
son of
Benoni & Susannah Mitchell

Here are two photographs I took
September 3, 2001of
Oliver Mitchell's gravestone.
