Govert
Farm
(schedule numbers 7
and 11)
We have seen that Govert Guttormsen Foss obtained 1/4 part of Hamre in 1789. This was a half-part of the old Knut Farm, and the newest house in the old cluster of homes. We can well guess that Govert Guttormsen wanted to come to Hamre, due to his young wife - she was 20 years younger than him - not being able to get along at Aabel and wishing to go back to Hamre where her maternal grandmother was from and where her paternal uncle Jorgen Tellefsen had married into the farm family (he was married to Anne's paternal aunt), and so there was close family there. The oldest son, Guttorm, died in 1810 at age 24. So it was the younger Christen Guttormsen who came to take over the farm a decade later. At the end of January, 1820, Govert and Anne gave Christen the deed on condition of pension. In the following contract it states:
-- "to allow for us all our necessities, food, and comforts until the end of our lives, and if we, for our health sake choose to run our own household and eat at our own table, he shall be obliged, as long as we live, to provide for us: 4 tons of good, cleaned barley, 1 ton of rye, a quarter of grain, a half ton of malt and hops, a quarter of salt, 6 tons of potatoes, 55 pounds of fresh salmon, and after the second year the right to 65 pounds of salmon, two sheep for slaughter, 5 sheep for fattening, and the milk of a cow. Further we reserve the right to free use and command of a piece of forest north of Aasene, within its borders and markers as much as necessary for cutting, free transportation for parish priest when we required his presence, and for ourselves to the church or our friends, the use of a housegirl to serve us when we need one, free lamps and heat, along with gentle and affectionate treatment, and after our deaths a respectable burial, if the expenses can be met from our remaining assets."
For this, Christen Govertsen is allowed 5 and 7/30 pastures [this may be an old standard measure] in Hamre. For the remaining 6 pastures he pays his parents debt of 94 speciedalers and pay about 77 speciedalers to his brother Johannes and a like amount to his sister Maren, who was married to Johannes Guttormsen Ve. It was explicitly stated in the contract that the sister should receive as equally as the brother, not half as much, as was typical. Of the part Christen was to pay, there was 5 speciedalers for each share of a horse, 5 speciedalers for each share in 2 cows, and 80 shillings for a share of a plow and a pair of wheels!
Christen Govertsen came to be the owner of the old home place at Hamre at 44 years of age. His father died in 1832, but his mother lived until 1852.
End of p. 29
Beginning p. 30
Like so many others, Christen was able to pay off his debts during his entire time at the farm. He paid off his siblings in 1820, but did take out a loan from the Norwegian Bank in 1826 for 160 speciedalers, and in 1833 for 295. In 1839 he sold Sandhaven for 50 speciedalers, and in 1846 paid 1 pasture to Osmund Tellefsen. The next year he also had to increase his loan at the Norwegian Bank to 400 speciedalers, which was used to pay off a loan he had obtained in 1836 from merchant Jens Boysen. In 1858 the loan at the Norwegian Bank was paid down to 310 speciedalers, but then he took out a loan of 125 speciedalers at the Hypotek Bank, presumably to pay off his merchant debt.
In 1861 his daughter Kristiane moved back from Bergen. She was married to a German [note: they had a strong trade presence in Bergen], Gustav Edvard Rohrlapper. He was listed as a weaver, age 34 years (in 1863). In 1864, when he was 75 years old, Christen Govertsen divided the farm into two equal pieces. His son Knud received the offset part Kleivshagen (schedule number 11) and his daughter Kristiane and her husband received the old home place. And the weaver Gustav Rohrlapper, who was born at Saarheim in Saxony in 1828, was now the a farmer at Hamre. He gave 300 speciedalers for his ownership and took in his inlaws.
Farm #7
Gustav Rohrlapper's farm was given the schedule number 7. Rohrlapper was in control of the farm until 1900 when he deeded over to his son Johannes for 8,200 crowns. He had then divided off the piece Nedre Monen, and there he lived with Kristiane. Gustav Rohrlapper died in 1911. Kristiane later moved in with her daughter at Ve, where she died in 1929 -- at 100 years of age. Kristiane and Gustav had four sons and two daughters who grew to adulthood. Three of the sons left for America. They were Gustav Adolf, born in Bergen in 1856, Kristen August, born in 1863, and Karl Fredrik, the youngest, born in 1873. Their daughter Ernestine Vilhelmine Fredrikke, who was born in Bergen in 1859, was married to Thomas Markussen Hamre in 1883. After she died, Thomas was married to Ernestine's sister, Sina Kamilla, born 1870. Their children include the well known Markussen brothers, Melvin, Edvard, and Einar Markussen.
Johannes Rohrlapper, who was born in 1867, was married in 1896 to Tomine Gundersdatter Hamre, a daughter of Gunder Jorgensen. She belonged to the old Hamre family, was born in 1872 and died in 1929. Johannes Rohrlapper had just one daughter, Selma Konstanse, born in 1897. She was married in 1919 to Hans Aurebekk, from Oddernes, who took over the farm in 1923 for 17,300 crowns and a number of terms and conditions. Johannes Rohrlapper went to America where he succumbed to a drowning accident in 1934.
Hans Aurebekk controlled the farm for 25 years. In 1947 he deeded it over to his son Johan Nikolai Rohrlapper Aurebekk (born April 16, 1920) for 22,000 crowns, of which 5,500 crowns went towards the residence and accoutrements. Nikolai Aurebekk was better known as a merchant than as a farmer. In addition to his shopping center, he had interest in two businesses in the city. When Hans Aurebekk took over the farm, he built a house across the road.
Gustav Rohrlapper had three cows and two sheep on the farm in 1865, sowed 1/8 ton of wheat, 1/8 ton of rye, 1/2 ton of barley, 3/4 ton of oats, and planted 2 tons of potatoes. In 1875 this had increased to four cows, one calf, and a horse. Also, 1/4 ton of wheat, 1/4 ton of rye, 1 ton of oats, and 4 tons of potatoes.
At the same time that Christen Govertsen divided the farm in 1864, he sold a piece which later became Farm #12 to Guttorm Svendsen, with pasture rights for one cow and four sheep. Farm #24, was parceled off in 1900. In 1965, Bjornebakken was separated off to Gunnar Benestad. Farm #7 has 7 acres of cropland and 75 acres of productive forest land, and a main house built in 1905, improved in 1921 and 1947. A new outbuilding in 1948.
