| Frederick Co to wit: This day Hesekiah
Emery
personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace for
the aforesaid county and made oath that Gustavus Croston
who is sometimes called Travis Croston did enlist in the
service of the United States in the revolutionary war
under Capt Hamilton and did serve three years and at the
expiration of the term he enlisted again during the war
and that he knows he served and he further testifies that
he has been acquainted with him from his first
recollection which he reckons must be fifty years
as he Emery is between fifthy and sixty yrs of age
and that the said Croston which is now before me is the
same man named above given under my hand on 12th May

My notation: This is
interesting in the fact that Hesekiah Emery according to
this document was born between 1758 and 1768 and recalls
that he has known Gustavus for 50 years; i.e. since Abt.
1768. Hezekiah Emery is on the 1840
Hampshire Co. (West) Virginia Census on pp 154-155 Since Hezekiah was not a pensioner, we can "assume" that he did not serve in the military. I have not researched this yet. There is another Hezekiah in 1840 in another county who is listed as "colored" and has been in this other county for a number of decades. Consequently I do not think Hezekiah Emery of Hampshire Co. is the same person, but posssibly could be the son of Hezekiah Emery, colored, in another county. To complicate matters, there is a 3rd Hezekiah Emery in yet another county. No counties are near Hampshire. |
