| Gibson vs. Gibson Deposition of Gibson Jones of South Carolina, late of Virginia, age 23 last march, sayeth that in August 1758, he was living with Gilbert Gibson in Louisa county. He says Gibson was privately removing himself to Carolina and had got about one quarter of a mile from his house with all his goods when Thomas Johnson, Junr. and Tarlton Brown, sheriffs, overtook them. Johnson levied an execution of James Daniel on a mare loaded with Gibson's belongings which included a bed. Gibson paid Johnson L 10 which was 9 s more than this execution. Sowrn before B. Smith, Waddy Thomson and Wm. Phillip, May 1767. Different
version: **************** Gilbert Gibson, age 53, swore before George Thomson and James Meriwether, Gent., sayeth that years ago he, his father, and his brother, George Gibson went over some land. Gilbert Gibson said to his son, George, that he would give him 200 acrs on Halfway Branch on the south side of the River and Lickinghole Creek if he would go live on it. George built a tobacco house, cleared some land, built a house on land he rented from Capt. Hudson and married. Gilbert asked his son many times again about living on the land he said he would give him and one day drank some rum on his oath that he would give him the land. George went on the land with that as his contract. He paid his father quit rents for 15 to 20 years. Sworn before James Meriwether and George Thompson, 2 May 1767. Different version in reel 122 frame 0395 Deposition of Gilbert Gibson aged 53 years taken before George Thomson and James Meriwether Gent. the deponent being first sworn said about one or about and [illeg.[ {probably one or one and a half years ago} ago he and his father and his brother, George Gibson, went over the land that he gave him and the land that he gave to the sd. The sd.Gilbert, his father, said to his son, George, I will give you 200 acres of land at that place only he should not come belong the branch that were called the halfway branch on the south side of the River and Lickinhole on the north side if youwill goe and live on it and at his death there were not 200 acres of land that it may be made out of this tract and the sd. Goerge went and built a tobacco house and cleared a peae of ground and maid a crop on that place and after that he married and George rented a peace of land of Capt. Hudson and lived on it after that the sd. George went over to his father's and the deponent happened to be there and the sd. Gilbert ask the sd. | Gibeon Jones was 14 years old in 1758 and
living with the Gibsons. Gilbert, Jr and Gibeon [my notation: Gibeon Jones] moved to Berkeley Co., SC c.1767. In 1769 the Gibsons(Gilbert and Phoebe) sold and moved elsewhere (maybe Craven Co., SC?). Gibeon Jones stayed in Newberry. He [my notation: Gibeon] was involved with the Davenports, Goggans, and William Burton families there. [my notation: "there" is Newberry] There has been some speculation that William Burton's wife is somehow related to Gibeon Jones. Her name was Phoebe, she was born c.1745. Phoebe and William Burton named a son Gibeon. Gibeon Jones ALWAYS witnessed William Burton's land sales. |
| In response to my
question: Is it impossible that Phoebe Burton (m. to
William Burton) is the same Phoebe m. to Gilbert Gibson,
Jr.? I know that Phoebe was not an un-common
name? But still -- Lynn's response was: I do not think Phoebe Gibson and Phoebe Burton could be the same person. In the will of William Burton 1826 in Newberry County he refers to his wife Phoebe [my notation: Phoebe Unknown Burton] as the mother of his children..."son, Gibeon to recieve $200. after the death of father and mother"..."son Aaron to receive all the land where I now live...after the death of his mother" Gibeon [my notation: Gibeon Burton] was born c.1775. I believe there were children before Gibeon, maybe as early as 1767 when William Burton made land request, but Gibeon was the oldest child at his father's death. She had the last known child around 1783. Phoebe's [my notation: Phoebe Burton] estimated DOB is c.1745. Phoebe Gibson sold land with her husband, Gilbert in 1758 in Louisa Co. Phoebe Burton and William Jr. also witnessed a will in 1784 for Sukey Collins, Daughter of Joseph and Lucy Collins, in Abbeville. William Sr administered the estate. Sukey left her mother 400 acres on Thickety Creek. There is also an overlap of Phoebe Gibson and Phoebe Burton witnessing land transactions. 1787-1789. Phoebe predeceased William Burton, she made no will. There were no Gibsons or Jones' mentioned in the settlement for William Burton. |
| In 1768 in Middlesex Co.,
VA there was a Dorothy Davis who testified that her brother, William Jones, dec'd had left part of his estate to her son, William Davis. This was contested by John Blake who married the widow, Mary Jones. Interested party was also Gibson Jones of Louisa VA, son of the deceased. [My interpretation] Generations 2) Dorothy
Jones Davis (her son is William Davis) |
