Gentlemen your company is desired at Louisa Courthouse on Friday next without fail to give me a character such a one as you think I bear as you have known me manyyears and don't think you nor no one else can charge anything against me as this unlucky affair has happened. Should be extremely glad if you and Mr. George Johnson, Mr. Willm. Baker and Mr. Thomas Pu [illeg.] and Mr. Francis Lipscomb will meet on Friday at Louisa Courthouse to say what for a character I have among my neighbors when I lived down there, whether in favour of me or not should be glad if you all will come over. Remaining your humble servant, Henry Jacobs Jan. 10, 1786

Sir, I am desired by Henry Jacobs to attend at our courthouse on Friday the 13th Jan. to say what I know respecting his character as to his honesty. I have lived as a neighbor to his father for 17 or 18 years and all that time never heard the least fraud nor any thing derogatory committed by his father or mother or their son, Henry. Now at the bar before your worships if he was [illeg.] inclined so may your living by his parents must surely have heard something hurtful to his character if he was that way included, but Gent. I do believe him, as well as his parents, to be truly honest. I would have been at Court according to his request if my health wold permit my doing that distance. I am Sir your hmbl., G. LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA JUDGMENTS
Reel 144 Frame 0743
14 November 1785

To Chancery Court, your orator William Gibson, son of Sarah, was sued in this Court by Thomas Barnet as security to his brother, Jordan Gibson. Your orator knowing the demand to be a just one set up no defense against it but supposed a judgment to go that when execution came out, your orator was surprised to find that there had been two judgments passed against him for being security for the sd.Jordon and your orator did not become security only in one instance. That the reason why this injustice done your orator was that he was not appraised to make a defense at law. The suit was born on the effects of your orator, and your orator with his security replevied the same on which replevy bond there was execution awarded which said execution your orator's goods have also been taken and are now liable to be sold. All which actings and doings are contrary to equity and good conscience and manifestly tend to injure and suppress your orator. In tender consideraiton whereof for as much as your orator is remediless in the premises by the strict rules of the common law and can only be relieved in chancery where the rigors of the common law are done away and justice most amply administred. Did not judgment pass against your orator without defense at law? Has not execution been there upon and the same been levied by the said Barnett on the effects of your orator? Has not your orator, together with his security, replevied his said effects by executing a replevy bond? Has not execution been awarded by your worshipful Court on both the said replevy bonds and the effects of your orator and his goods taken?
14 Nov. 1785

The answer of Thomas Barnett to a bill in chancery exhibited against him by William Gibson, son of Sarah. Saith it is true he did under take two suits in the Court against Jordan Gibson and the sd. complainant, his security. He said the complt. had entered himself security for his brother, Jordan, two times. 25 April 1787.

In consequence of his the said Coates' suspicions, he went in search of the corn and about a mile and a half from his the said Coate's house. In a parcel of shavings,he found to the best of his judgment about 2 bushels of corn in the ears which he supposed to be his. Upon which the said Coates returned and got several of his neighbors to go with himthat evening and secret themselves convenient to the corn in order to detect the villains and about 8 o'clock that night, William Gibson, Drummer, and William Branham came riding up to the corn and got off their horses and began to pt the corn in a bag upon which the said Coates and his neighbors advanced on them and found William Branham putting the corn in a bag and the said William Gibson, drummer, holding up the bag. After some conversation and the said Coates directing the said Gibson to carry the corn to his said Coates he the said Gibson refused and said he would carry it home. Upon which the said Gibsons took up the corn and went on his way home the said William Branham with him and when they came near his the said Coates house, he the said Coates forewarned him the said Gibsons from carrying the corn off the land. No regard that he went on with the corn and the said William Branham with him. Further this deponent saith not.

AGNES GOINS
Information received from a Gowen Researcher - Thank you!

Agnes Gowen, [Edward, Jr.4, Edward3, William2, Mihil1] regarded as a
daughter of Edward Gowen, Jr, was born about 1721, probably in Northampton
County.
Where Have All the Children Gone?"
January 9, 1743, Louisa County, Virginia
The court ordered that "she receive 25 lashes on her bare back because she had a bastard child."
On 10 October 1743 “Agnes Goin” sued Gilbert Gibson in Louisa County Court
“for £3 due for services performed.”

I have from another researcher who transcribed this name is ANNE GOIN.

Agnes Going was recorded November 12, 1757 as "under the care of" Cedar
Creek Monthly Meeting, according to "Encyclopedia of American Quaker
Genealogy," Vol. 6 [Virginia] by Hinshaw.  This entry suggests that she was
receiving provisions and perhaps other assistance from the Quaker church.

On April 10, 1770 the church wardens of Trinity Parish were ordered to "bind
out all her children under 21 years, except the youngest."  Her son,
Sherwood Going was bound out to William Phillips.  On February 12, 1776
Agnes Going appeared in court to file a complaint about the ill-treatment
"Sherrod Go-ing was receiving from his master, William Phillips."

"Agnes Going, free colored" was enumerated in 1787 as the head of a
household which contained a "white male, 16-21," according to "The 1787
Census of Virginia" by Netti Schreinder-Yantis."  She owned two head of
cattle, but was not tithable herself.  The "white male" might have been her
son, Daniel Going who would have fit the age bracket.
Children born to Agnes Gowen are believed to include:
Moses Going born about 1743
Joseph Going born about 1747
Sarah "Sally" Gowen born about 1751
David Going born about 1752
Benjamin Going born about 1755
Sherwood Going born about 1756
Joshua Going born about 1758
Samuel Going born about 1760
Daniel Going born about 1766"

Paul Heinegg suggests that Agnes Gowen was the commonlaw wife of a slave.
[My notation]
If Agnes Going was an employee of Gilbert Gibson, [and also a commonlaw wife of a slave], I am wondering if it was possible in that decade for her or anyone in her station, to bring a lawsuit for services performed. I cannot find so far a way to convert L3 into today's dollars. I wonder if there was a personal relationship between Gilbert Gibson and Agnes Goins. However, there are no given names common to Gilbert Gibson's family of given names.

[Branham vs. Gibson]
reel 126 frame 0869

Mrs. Ann Moore
Frances Gibson Branham, plaintiff
Sarah Turner Gibson, 2nd wife of Gilbert, defendant
Negro wench
James Meriwether

My notations in red:
The evidence of Mrs. Ann Moore in a suit between Frances Branham and Sarah Gibson.
The sd. Ann Moore saith the said plaintiff's
{Frances Gibson Branham}grandmother {Gilbert Gibson's mother} lived with the plaintiff {Frances Gibson Branham} in her {the plaintiff?} father's {Gilbert Gibson} house; {So we have Frances' grandmother living with Frances in Gilbert's house.} Plaintiff's grandmother came to Ann Moore and told her {Ann Moore} that {Gilbert} her son, the plaintiff's father, had turned her {Gilbert's mother} out of home because she {Gilbert's mother} would not make over {hand over} a Negro wench {that} she {Gilbert's mother} had for her maintenance and the sd. Mrs. Moore asked her {Gilbert's mother} what she had done with her bed and she told her, the sd. Moor, that she had giving {given} it to her grandaughter, Frances, and that the sd. Moore swears that it were a very good bed with good covering and that she was well acquainted with the family and that the plaintiffs further could if [illeg.] his for several years. {could of used this for several years.}

The affirmation of Mrs. Ann Moore taken 11 May 1768 before me James Meriwether. [Branham vs. Gibson]

LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA JUDGMENTS
p. 21

My notations in red

Frances Branham this day made oath before me that her father, Gilbert Gipson, deceased, is indebted to her for 10 lbs. of feathers, for which she had never received any satisfaction.
Given under my hand 21 May 1763, George Thompson.
(probably should be 1768.)
The depositions above and below were taken 21 May 1763, showing that Gilbert Gibson was deceased. All other resources show that he died in 1764. I would have to see this actual deposition. Below is another deposition taken the same day, 21 May 1763, showing Gilbert Gibson, dec'd. The lawsuit above Branham vs. Gibson regarding evidence of Mrs. Ann Moore states 11 May 1768. I would tend to believe that these dates are supposed to be 1768 instead of 1763.
Thomas Lenders this day made oath before me that he heard Gilbert Gipson, dec'd. acknowledge that he had a bed and furniture and a cow and colt in his possession belonging to his daughter, Frances Branam. 21 May 1763. (probably should be 1768.)

[My notation: Sarah Lemay married Gilbert Gibson AFTER February 24, 1746.]

It appearing to the Court that Sarah Lemay and Jane Moody by reason of their sole and disorderly course of late do neglect to take due care of the Education of their children in Christian principles. Ordered that the Church Wardens of Fredericksville Parish do bind them out.

I don't think this can be Sarah Gibson's parents
Research says Sarah Turner was married to Peter Lemay by 1720,
So it can't be Sarah Turner Lemay Gibson.
