| This is the house where my
great-grandparents, Frederick and Martha lived. I must
have been around 4 years old (1939) when we were on the
swing on the porch (see above) he gave me a doll in a
shoe box for my birthday. I recall that I wanted to swing
him to give him pleasure, but others told me that he was
too old to be swung. I didn't understand that concept at
the time. I recently learned that Frederick had another interest in shoe boxes; that he raised bees in shoe boxes, quite successfully. This must have been quite handy to have in the days of war rationing Abt.1941-1945. I have heard that Frederick has tuberculosis and he had moved to his home here from another state because it was a high altitude. I am not sure of the family residences during his father's life and whether the family all moved from Cumberland, Allegheny, Maryland at the same time. I have not checked the elevation of both places, but it would seem to me that Cumberland would have been a higher elevation. |
| I am told by a descendant that "Aunt Martha" usually went barefooted. She would make biscuits. They had fruit trees. |

| On March 13, 1871, John Wanstreet
(Silas' father) purchased property in St. Clare Colony
(Leopold) from J. H. dis Debar. John was married to Lucy
Kreyenbuhl. Of their children, silas remained at the home
place. He met Anna Grace Fahey from Lewis county when she
was teaching school at St. Clara and they were married in
November 1913. A new hom was built in 1936 to replace the
original family home. After Silas' death in 1954, Grace moved to Akron. She always kept in touch with friends and relatives at St. Clara and Leopold. The history of the community has always been import to Grace and the original deed form J. H. Dis Debar is in her possession. Although the farm was sold in 1972, the family has many cherished memories shared in the Wanstreet home. Written by Lucy Eileen (Wanstreet) Morris (d/o Silas and Grace Wanstreet) |

My Uncle, Abt. 1939 I vaguely remember this roll of paper. I wonder what it could have been. I loved books and paper. It must have been a gift. |
| George and Gladys
Wanstreet had a farm near the Pleasant Valley Church near
Spurgeon, Doddridge, WV. George was a successful farmer,
raising beef. Their land was quite hilly. My mother and
dad and I would visit them in the springtime. They lived
off a road that you couldn't drive a car on until summer
came. Sometimes we would go too early. After you came off
the muddy road where once we got stuck, you would come
onto another road that went at the bottom of their house
and you would have to pass a stream that was sometimes
too high to cross. The Spurgeons (George's wife, Gladys
Spurgeon) lived even farther down the road from them with
roads even more treacherous. When we went to their house, Gladys Spurgeon, (George's wife) whose father J. I. Spuregon, married Isey, (George's sister) {Gladys had previously been Isey's step-daughter, but became Isey's sister-in-law when she married George) lived quite harmoniously together. They would have the largest table of food that I had ever seen to greet us and loved to feed us. Their house seemed quite large, but I know now that it was not. They had a pantry with row-upon-row of canned fruits and vegetables and canned beef. No one when I grew up ever ate beef other than well-done. I was so impressed with their use of a table-cloth to eat upon; that I to this day copy their style. I like to set a nice comfortable table and I often think of them for this reason. They had a bathroom (which was quite unusual for country folk in 1940) and a covered porch on the second floor of the house. I recall sleeping on this porch one night. I slept on a straw-filled "feather-tic." One other time I slept in the house on a straw-filled "feather-tic." I dont' know if Gladys, George and Isey slept on a straw-filled "feather-tick" or not. Their house always was clean and picked-up. They wore aprons all the time we were there. Since their house was on a hill, there was another hill beside them with a "holler" in between. George had made a clothes line for them coming off their porch with a pulley going to the other hill, so they could dry their clothes and reel them out and then in again. What a life! I recall an organ in the house, a deer-head with antlers on the wall, a black straw-filled leather divan and a couple of oriental rugs; one in the parlor and one in the first-floor bedroom. At Gladys' funeral, the preacher said that when he was a young man that he had lived with Gladys and George an Isey for a long time. They had given him a home while he was becoming a minister. He spoke highly of their Christian ways. I got to see their old homeplace in 1984 when I was in West Virginia, and it had been rented out and was in such a state of disrepair that it seemed that no one could possibly be living there, but there was. I heard later that the house had burned. That year I visited Gladys, she was already living in Auburn, WV, not too many miles from the old home place. I saw that she had many family pictures. It is too bad that I have no contact with the family to obtain some of the pictures to share with others on this website. I hope that her nephew who I saw at her funeral and I heard inherited her property will see this site someday and be able to provide some pictures for others to see. The last time I visited Gladys in 1993 I called her to let her know that I would be there and she said, "You didn't come to eat, did you?" When I saw her then, she noticeably had some dementia, but recognized me shortly after trying to figure out if it were me. The next time I saw her was at her funeral in 1994. |
| When I first saw Auburn,
Ritchie County, West Virginia in 1984, it had a post
office that only one or two persons could fit into. I
later talked to someone who said that their closest
relative had worked many years in that post office. Auburn seemed to me to be a little hill town. It seemed there might not be more than 30 people in the town. We had to drive 30 miles to the first very small grocery store. One of the boys on the street playing spoke with such an accent that we couldn't understand him after his repeating his sentences many time. The town was only a block or so long. From a Ritchie County history book, it said that Auburn was settled in 1829. It was a prosperous community raising fine cattle and pure-bred sheep. Among doctors born and raised there were Dr. Bernice Eddy, who worked with Dr. Jonas Salk in developing the polio vaccine and Dr. Ralph Eddy who achieved international fame as the first to perform an unusual operation. Dr. Joseph Gluck was the youngest chaplain to have a commander's rating in the US Navy in World War II. I am wondering if Dr. Harry Straley, retired Dean of Morris Harvey College from Auburn, is a Straley Family relation of mine. The book shows a picture of the Auburn House which was owned by emery Brown during the 1920's when the oil and gas boom was at its height. There are many other people of note in this article. I visited a woman in Auburn whom I don't know if she is a relative or not or if so, how; but she remains very dear in my memory, Mae Drain. She sat out on a porch and quilted in the nicest of daylight. What a lovely smile. I bought a postage stamp quilt from her and am still sitting on the couch under it on the slightest of cool days. |
