1840 Census, Hampshire County, (West) Virginia
I'm not sure what these numbers mean in this first 5 rows,
but I have put my research below for these names,
and the numbers do not agree for numbers of children,
so I don't know what they represent.

CROSTON, CHARLES 4 3 8
CROSTON, JAMES 2 2 8
CROSTON, JOHN 5 4 8
CROSTON, TRAVIS 2 5 8
CROSTON, WILLIAM 2 1 8

1840 Census Hampshire County, (West) Virginia
my research

In this 1840 census, no one lives in the below households that is alive that would be of Gustavus' age, so since Gustavus died in 1841, it is not known whose household he was living in 1840.

The below Croston's are all on the same census page.

[My notation: Travis D. (Gustavus) Croston, son of (Gustavus) Travis D. Croston was b. 1810, aged 30 in this census, so his age just doesn't fit here. Gustavus was b. Abt. 1755, so this definitely is not him. Gustavus died in 1841, but so far I have not found where he is in the 1840 census.]
Travis Croston

all the rest are listed under "free colored persons"
1 male under 10
1 male 36 and under 55
1 female under 10

William Croston
all "free colored persons"
1 male under 10
1 male 36 and under 55
1 female 10 and under 24
Charles Croston (my direct ancestor]
1 free white male 50 and under 60
[My notation: Could this be Nancy's father?]
1 free white female 20 and under 30
[My notation: This is probably Charles' wife,
Nancy "Polly" Burke Isner Croston]

below are all "free colored persons"
2 males under 10
[My notation: I show no males of Charles & Nancy b. before 1840.]
1 male 24 and under 36
[My notation: This is probably Charles Croston. I show him b. 1813.]
2 females under 10
[My notation: I show 1 female child of Nancy's, Sally Ann Isner b. 1835 AND 1 female child of Nancy & Charles', Nancy Croston b. 1840]
(George Deaver is next on the census. He was next to Gustavus Croston in the 1820 census]

CROTEN

All listed as CROTEN, though I will write "Croston"

Charles Crosten 45 Male Farmer [My notation: b. Abt. 1805 - my great-great-great grandfather]
Nancy Crosten 36
[My notation: b. Abt. 1814 - my great-great-great grandmother, Nancy "Polly" Burke Isner Croston]
Francis Croston 18 Farmer (b. Abt. 1832)
Sarah A. Croston 17 (b. Abt. 1833)
Mary E. Croston 13 (b. Abt. 1837)
Samuel Croston 10 (b. Abt. 1840)
Nancy Croston 9 (b. Abt. 1841)
Susan C. Croston 7
My notation: b. Abt. 1843 - my great-great grandmother]
Charles Croston, Jr. 4 (b. Abt. 1846)
Thos. Croston 2 (b. Abt. 1848)

[My notation: Sarah A. Croston 17 is no doubt, Sally Ann Isner Croston]
I would suspect that Francis 18 would probably be by Nancy's marriage to Unknown Isner, as well. Since we don't know the marriage date of Charles and Nancy, we cannot know yet which of the other children are Charles Croston's children with Nancy.]
Samuel Pritchard, single, farming, 18, b. Taylor Co., parents Warner & Ruth; m. Susan C. Croston, single, age 15, b. Hampshire Co., parents Charles & Polly; place of residence of both Barbour County, Minister J. S. Corder married them December 12, 1857.

Rhoda 10 F M VA

This is Thomas Croston, son of Gustavus Croston,
making his date of birth Abt. 1785 instead of Abt. 1792.
The age of 65 is probably in error
.

Barbour County, VA, 1850 Census

Travis Croston 40 M M Farmer VA Cannot read or write
Mary Croston 41 F M VA Cannot read or write
Elizabeth Ann 20 F M VA
Emily 18 F M VA
Nancy 16 F M VA
Rebecca 14 F M
William 13 M M
Hannah 12 F M
John M M

This is Travis Croston, son of Gustavus Croston.
Thomas' age on the 1850 Barbour County Census is off by a lot of years.

Randolph County, VA, 1850 Census

Noble T. Croston 33 M M Farmer VA
Sarah A. 18 F M VA
If this date of 33 years old is correct, he couldn't have been the son of Thomas Croston & Mary Croston as the years are off on again. But he could have been fibbing about his age of 33 or the census taker got it off by 10 years and it should have been 23.

Monongalia County, VA 1850 Census

208/209
James Croston 28, M M VA Cannot read or write
Sarah Croston, 26 F M VA

John Croston 61, M M Farmer $400, VA
Elizabeth Croston 54, F ? VA cannot read or write
Ferdinand S. 19, M ? VA
Elinor 18 F ? VA

It seems there might be a ditto on the next 3 lines beginning with Elizabeth for the M's,
but the census is too poor to be certain.

Charles Croston
grandson of Gustavus Croston
http://genforum.genealogy.com/croston/messages/31.html

I have Gustavus Crostons Revolutionary War records and pension file. I also know where he is buried. He is buried on the family farm in North River Mills, Hampshire Co WV.
His grave is at the edge of Maple Run. The DAR put up a sign at his grave and some "redneck' tore the sign down. The farm is now owned by the Bakers. I talked to them and they said that Charles Crosten was a grandson of Gustavus who had inherited the farm and that he sold the farm several yrs ago. If you ever get to WV let me know and I will show you where he is buried.
[My notation: There may be conflict here becauase of place of burial. Clemtown is not near North River. Here is the information I have on Charles Croston.
