www.heritagequestonline "At the June term, 1735, Charles Carter and William Beverley reported as to the agreement they had been ordered to make with Colonel Spotswood for land to set the courthouse on, but nothing appears to have come of it, for in October, 1736, a proposal being made where to build it, the Court, after debate, agreed that it be built at the place appointed by the commissioners "near the Governor's Ford on the south side of the Rapidan. At the same term application was made to the Governor for orders to alter the place of holding court from Black Walnut to Mr. Bramham's house in December next, "it being near where the courthouse is, with all expedition, going to be built," and notice was given that workmen meet at the November term to undertake the building. At November, after debate where to bild, the Court agreed with John Bramham that he lease twenty acres of land to build it on for 120 pounds of tobacco per annum, and that the plot should "include the convenientest spring to Cedar Island ford." "The next term was accordingly held at Bramham's house, and it was at this location of the courthouse that Peter was decapitated and his head stuck on a pole, and that Eve was burned at the stake, as appears from the orders published in the text." |

From IGI - 1988 LDS |
| Oak Lawn, Cherry Avenue and
Ninth Street, Charlottesville, VA p. 93 'Louisa County Homes' |
| This unusally appealing example of Jeffersonian Palladianism is one of the many structures scattered through central Virginia whose architecture was invluenced by workmen who learned the fundamentals of classicism while in the employ of Thomas Jefferson at the University of Virginia. The three-part house, with its pedimented cetner section and flat-roof Tuscan portico, was built in 1822 for Nimrod Bramham, a merchant who served in the House of Delegates. After Bramham's death in 1847, Oak Lawn was sold to the Reverend James Fife, an influential Baptist minister who in 1823 helped organize the Baptist General Convention. Born in Scotland, Fife served as the city engineer for Richmond before moving to Charlottesville. Oak Lawn has remained in the ownership of Fife descendants. 104-31 (4/17/73). There is a picture on this page. |
| I was looking at this house outside for the graveyard when invited in by the Fife owners. The gravesite behind has two sections; one is Bramham descendants; one is Fife descendants. In this Bramham cemetery is buried, coincidentally a man by the name of Richard N. Pinkard. This leads me to believe that the Nimrod/Ludlow Bramham family had some connection to my Pinkard Napper Bramham. |
| Another fact that would make a connection between my Bramham family and the Ludlow Bramham family is that there was one deed between the two different families. |

Green Springs
Historic District |
Green springs area of Louisa county has been known as a region of exceptional fertility, properity and beautyh. Contrasted with Louisa's surrounding hilly land with its thin soil grown up in ascrub pine and oak, this 14,000-acre bowl, a geological formation that defines Green Springs, is composed of lush, rolling pastures and high-yield fields. First settled in the 1720's by families from Tidewater Virginia,t he area takes its name from a mineral spring located near its center which served as a local spa during the lat 18th century. Numerous ... buildings including the colonial Boswell's Taverns and Carpenters' Gothic St. John's Chapel, form an assemblge of rural architecture of extraordinary variety and outstanding quality in a countryside gently civilized over a period of two and a half centuries. 54-111 |

REV. GEORGE
MORRIS |
"A
History of Louisa County, Virginia" by Malcolm
Harris "Rev. George Morris was chosen minister, one of the members of Goldmine, and one who had for a time been preaching among them. With him came a divsiion. He was baptizing candidates and receiving them into distant churches, which the Goshen Association did not hold right. Consequently the church was split and Morris, with a majority, held to old thompson's Meeting house, and the other faction, which was recognized as regular Baptist byt he Association, built a state at what was later to be the site of Goldmine church, for here they grew and flourished until 1805, when they built themselves a church building." I am not sure that this is the same George Morris, as Eliza has on her tombstone that she belonged to the M.E. church for 61 years, which would have made her join in 1843, before she was marrried. |
