CATHERINE BELL
d. March 7, 1802, New Madrid Co., Missouri
(My 5th great-grandmother)
married 1st
James Faris
married 2nd David Shelby

Research compiled by me from my own reasearch and other various persons:

Phyllis Vines, descendant of Elizabeth Balla's sister
Judith A. Trolinger, deed research New Madrid County, Missouri

Wilma Faris Lorance, descendant of James Faris & James' son, John Faris
Author of
"James Faris and Catherine (Bell) Faris, Descendants and Family History 1770-1993"
Information in her book is not taken for inclusion on my website,
unless done so unwittingly.

My thanks for bringing Catherine Bell to life and to share with others.

Catherine Bell
first married
James Faris, killed by Indians.

Their children are:

John Faris
Humphrey Faris
James Faris

1) JOHN FARIS b. January 11, 1770 in Pennsylvania d. January 2, 1851 in Highland Co., Ohio
..... married Jane Watson b. October 4, 1778 in Pennsylvania d. april 29, 1850 in Highland Co., Ohio
......Jane Watson's father: James Watson d. Beaver Co., PA, blind and poor. Pensioned for Am. Rev.
John and Jane are both buried: Barker Cemetery, Pricetown, Highland, Ohio

(My 4th great-grandparents:)
2) HUMPHREY FARIS b. January 30, 1773 in Pennsylvania d. March 1, 1853 in Harrison County (West) Viriginia married SARAH ROSS b. January 12, 1777 m. Bef. February 17, 1800 probably in Harrison Co. (West) Virginia
Humphrey Faris married second Mary Magdaline Goodwin d. Bef. 1850

It is a possibility that Humphrey & Sarah are buried in or near Bridgeport, West Virginia. It is my understand that he lived in Bridgeport in a stone house built and owned by James Faris, Humphrey's father. It has since been occupied by a George T. Faris, and possibly now by a son of George T. Faris.

3) JAMES FARIS b. Abt. 1777 in Pennsylvania d. probably in Perry County, Missouri

Wilma Faris Lorance in an email to me says
"James Faris laid claim to 400 acres in Harrison Co. ca 1770."
He was killed by Indians somewhere near Wheeling between 1774-1783. The property was first occupied by James' eldest son, John (my ancestor). Then in 1797, John moved to what is now Hancock Co. WV.
Humphrey moved onto the Harrison Co.property and built a stone house there, which is still occupied by descendants."

In 1795, David Shelby was not a young man and he was comfortable on a large farm, but he could not resist. He sold part of his farm to his son Jonathan Shelby and David Brown and left the remainder in the hands of his son James Shelby. The rest of the family and the youngest of his step-sons, James Faris, began the journey to the New Madrid District of the Spanish Louisiana. They arrived by 20 May 1795 and on July 21, David and the other new immigrants from the United States took the oath of allegiance to the King of Spain.

David Shelby's name appears on the 1796 tax list with a crop of 200 bushels of corn.
