Captain Daniel Averill
123 Harbor Street, Branford, Connecticut 06405 |
| Captain Daniel Averill lived at
123 Harbor Street, Branford, CT. It is said that he
probably built the home in 1853. The historical plaque on
the outside of the home reads "1853."It was in
the family until July 30, 2004 . However, in the 1860 census Daniel and Jane, and their children Delbert and Lavena are in the 786/885 household of Stephen Beach age 38, b. CT, Hotel-keeper, $6,000;$1,000 Mary Beach 29 b. CT; and William age 8, b. CT - Stephen Beach is the h/h. And in the same dwelling is Daniel Averill, age 43, sailor, $1,800, $1,000 b. CT Jane Averill 38, b. CT (she was b. in NY according to all other census') Delbert 17, sailor [this is Charles A. Averill/Adelbert D. Averill] Lavena 7 b. NY This census leads me to believe that the home was either being constructed in 1860 or the final construction and habitation was after 1860. In the 1870 census, Daniel, Jane, A. Charles
and L. Sarah are listed in a separate household; Daniel
as Captain, and A. Charles as sailor. |

"FROM THE
ARCHIVES" by Dusty Dave |
| Remember when? .....Branford was a busy shipping community and seaport town? ...Before the bridges were built across the river and wharves and warehouses lined the river all the wayto our present Route 1? ........When Branford was home port to sloops, Five Sisters and Lottery, to schooners Laura, Ann Maria, Delight, Hazard, Morning Star, and Adventure, built in Branford and skippered by Daniel Averill. There was also Betsy, Roxanna, Maryhurst and Nancy, as well as Intrepid, Friendship, Washington and Eagle. |
