The second child of Jeremiah (I-1) and Nancy (Griffith)
Sweaney was born 10 Dec. 1816 in North Carolina. He moved with the
family to Tennessee about 1827. They were in Wayne Co. in 1830
and in Lawrence Co. by 1840.
He married Elizabeth E. in Tenn. about 1838. She was born
about 1815 in North Carolina. (Check Law. Co. Mgs) Their first 7
children were born there in Lawrence Co., then they moved to
Missouri about between 1852-4. He purchased land in 1858 in Range
19, Twp. 34, in sections 5 and 6. The plat book shows this land
registered to Geo. W. (Levi's son). Their youngest son,
Marion, purchased adjoining land in sec. 6 in 1884. William's
Homestead Entry was #4029 at Springfield Land Office for 120
acres in R19, Twp 34 and portions of Sec. 5.
By 1860 this family was in Dallas Co., MO Census. During
the Civil War, William joined the Missouri State Militia
Volunteers and served as a private in Co. G., 8th Regiment. His
tombstone reads Co. C, 8th Mo. Cav.
In the 1880 Census William is not living with his wife and
three children still in the home. Perhaps he was visiting a
child's family at the time it was taken.
It appears that they lived the remaining years in Dallas Co.
William died intestate 22 Nov 1887 in Dallas Co. (Cem stone reads
23 Nov). He was buried in the Sweaney - Riverview Cem. Levi J.
Sweaney was appointed adminstrator. At that time, all his surviving
children were residents of Dallas Co. His widow, Elizabeth Emily
may also be in the Sweaney Cem. but there is no listing for her.
