PEPPER FAMILY MISSOURI

See Sources Below

Some of the Pepper families probably resided in the early Merramec community. Some of their records are found in Jefferson County and some in Franklin County which was typical of this community.

The earliest record we have at present is a land memorial petition circulated in 1810 in Missouri. From Petiton 21 we have signatures of Robert, James, William, and John Pepper. These would have to have been born 1790 or before to be old enough to sign this petition.

The 1830 census shows that the mother of these men was born in 1770s, the father had died by then and the oldest sons were Robert b. 1780s, James Pepper b. 1780s, Samuel and John were born ca 1790 and had children by 1815-20. One of the signers is likely the father of this family. They are the same names but likely the name of the father is John or William as one of these sons could have been too young to sign and he was the Jr. Perhaps early land records will prove the father of this group. Some of these Pepper men undoubtedly had land claims that could be researched.

Also on the land petition were two James Caldwells. One of which was undoubtedly the future husband of Polly Pepper born 1800. He was born 1793 and only 17 at the time the signature was taken but then the land owners were anxious to get enough signatures.
