The first child of Isaac and Marguerite House Hildebrand was
born about 1801 in Marais de Liards, Louisiana Territory, St.
Louis District. He moved with his family down on Big River when
he was about four years old. His father, Isaac, died when he was
only seven or eight years old. The following year his mother,
Margaret, married Michael Null. He must have loved his stepfather as he seems to have named his first child after him.
About 1823 Abraham married Battsheba Jones. This marriage
was not recorded in Jefferson or Franklin counties. Her name is
recorded numerous ways: Battsheba, Batsheba, Bassheba and
Bersheba. We refer to her as the name is spelled in the source
given.
By the 1830 census, they were listed in the Bon Homme Twp of
St. Louis county. Thomas Williams and his family were residing
there as were many of the Sullenses, McCourtneys and Peter
Hildebrand, son of Judge Abraham Hildebrand, and who married
Elizabeth Williams.
Abraham died at about age 34 (ca 1835) and may have been
buried in a cemetery in BonHomme. St. Louis records need to be
checked for more information on this man. A search of the Jones
men of the age to be Battsheba's father could be searched in the
1830 census and then those named looked up in the St. Louis
Probate records.
About nine years later, Battsheba married Phillip Owen, 7
Nov 1844. (Jeff Co. Mg. Bk I). They had two children:
Catherine Owens b. 1845 and Angeline Owen (sic), b. 1849. They
also reared the four surviving children of Abraham Hildebrand:
Michael Norman, Maria, Jane and Thomas. Phillip Owen had had
five children by his previous marriage. They were aged 10-20
years old when they married. By the 1860 census, Bersheba was
again widowed and residing in Dallas Co. with her two daughters
and a James L. Hilderbrand. Is this another son? He was born
about 1840 which doesn't quite match with his father's death date
as we have it.
The first child of Abraham and Batsheba Jones was born 24
Dec 1824, BonHomme Twp., St. Louis County, MO. He was
undoubtedly named after his stepfather, Michael Null. The
middle name, Norman may also be a NULL name. He was only nine or ten years old
when his father, Abraham, died. It must have been
a difficult childhood growing up with only a mother to support
the family in pioneering times. He was twenty years old by the
time his mother remarried to Phillip Owens. No doubt Michael did
a great deal to support the family as he was the oldest male in
the family. He learned responsibility early.
On 13 Aug 1848 Michael Norman Hildebrand married Syrena
Johns in Franklin County. BonHomme Twp., St. Louis is just to
the east of Franklin Co. (Frkn Co. Mg Book B, p. 76) They were married on a
Sunday by William Peek, J.P. Syrena Johns was the
daughter of Mr. Johns and Mary (Polly) Pepper Johns. Syrena
Johns was born 1 Aug 1833 in Franklin Co., MO. A search needs to
be made of the Franklin County probates to find a Johns man who
died before 1848 naming his heirs.
We are indebted to Norman Hildebrand for many years of
family research on this branch of the family. His brother,
Charley Tucker, also assisted the author. Their records show
that Mary Pepper was born 17 July 1809 in N.C. She was fullblooded Cherokee
and Mr. Johns of English descent. They had two
known children: Benjamin Franklin Johns and Syrena Johns.
Benjamin F. was born ca 1831. He went to California and was with
the Placer Mines mining gold in Plumas Co., CA during the gold rush period
and remained there until the 1880s. He filed a claim
in 1880 and from a letter to MO, it is known that he had a ranch
and property.
Syrena's mother, Mary (Pepper) Johns married Asa Wiley Scott
3 Nov 1836 in Franklin Co. (Franklin Co. Mg Bk A, p.109). Asa Wiley
Scott was born 1790 in Liddesdale, Scotland.
Syrena was reared by Asa Scott and
with the Scott children born to this marriage: Julius Max, Nancy
and Hugh. The 1860 census of Dallas Co. shows that Julius Scott
was born 1837 in Illinois. We know that a Dr. James B. Pepper from Franklin
Co., MO spent some time in Ill. before he came to Dallas Co, MO.
For some Pepper family history:PEPPER
This family moved to Dallas Co., MO. Julius became a minister
for the Church of God. Julius and Nancy died in Dallas Co. Asa
Wiley Scott also died in Dallas Co. Syrena's mother, Mary Scott,
then married a John West 13 Aug 1848 and moved to Howell Co., MO
where she died. She is buried near Pomona, MO.
One can find the descendants of Julius Scott by writing to: Shirley Scott.
Michael Norman Hildebrand and Syrena Johns began their home
in Franklin Co., MO where the first children were born: Byron
Green in 1850 and Malinda Paralee in 1851. The third child, Mary
B., was born in 1852 but it is uncertain whether the place was in
Franklin Co., or in Dallas Co. where the family migrated. They
settled on land in Jasper Twp: Range 18, Twp 34 and on Sec. 3
bordered by Enoch Wilson and David Lawson.
Four or five more children came along and then the Civil War
demanded service. Michael Norman was a private in Co. B, 8th
Regiment of Cavalry, Missouri State Militia.
Michael Norman Hildebrand was a farmer in Dallas Co. and
took an active role in the community. He served as Justice of
the Peace and performed marriages. In 1869 he married Silas
Phillips to Lucinda Hildebrand, dau. of Francis. In 1870 he also
married William Stow to Prudence Scott; in 1876 he md W. D.
Hamlett to Luvina Scott and W. D. Ware to Sarah E. Wilson the
following year. He performed marriages for the Bennetts and
others in the Jasper Twp. community.
Michael Norman Hildebrand died 13 Jan 1878 in Jasper Twp. of
pneumonia. He was 54 years old. He and his wife, Syrena, are
buried at the Hildebrand Cemetery, Windyville, MO. They had 16
children.
The first child of Michael Norman and Syrena Johns
Hildebrand was born 28 July 1850 (or 1849?) in Franklin Co., MO.
Since he was not named after the Hildebrand side of the family,
this may be a JOHNS name. He moved with his family to Dallas
Co., MO about 1852. He served in the Union Army during the Civil
War Company H, 14th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry.
See: James Riley and Byron Green Hildebrand Byron Green with brother, James.
He married Sarah Scott 24 March 1867 in Dallas Co., MO. She
was the daughter of John W. and Delilah Scott. Byron and Sarah
had two children, John Norman and Mary Maggie. Sarah Scott was
born 24 Aug 1846. She died 26 Sept 1873, apparently of heart
attack. She was pregnant at the time. She and her two children
are buried in the Morgan Cemetery just S.W. of Bennett Springs
State Park. It is on private property and a beautiful location
in view of the Niangua River.
Byron Green married (2nd) Louisiana Scott, daughter of
George Washington and Sarah Catherine (Johnson) Scott, and a
cousin of his first wife, Sarah Scott. They were married 27 July
1876. She was born 1 March 1854 in Dallas Co., MO. Five
children were born to this union.
The fourth child of Byron Green and Louisiana
Hildebrand was born 28 Jan 1880 in Dallas Co., MO. She married
Edward Calvin Lawson on 24 Mar 1895 in Dallas Co., MO. He was

born 16 Oct 1876, Dallas Co., MO. They had nine children:
William Byron, Hester Blanche, Jesse Ray, Ruby Adaline, Robert
Jackson, Oda Alice, Bertha Lois, Anna Louise, and Icile Chloe.
Estella died 26 Oct 1954 of cancer. Edward Calvin died 16 March
1963 at age 86. They are buried at Oaklawn Cem. Buffalo, MO.

Dallas Co., MO. He died 24 May 1973 at Waverly, Lafayette Co.,
MO. Ora Belle died 8 June 1949 in Saline Co., MO at the age of
67 years. She is buried in Malta Bend Cem. Saline Co., MO. They
had moved to Saline Co. about 1913. They had ten children: Roy
Lester; twins: Gladys Opal and Ova H. (Ova died in infancy);

The sixth child of Byron Green and Louisiana
Hildebrand was born 27 Oct 1884 in Dallas Co., MO. She married
Charles Turner Morrow, son of James David and Lucy Margaret
(McLeod) Morrow, in Dallas Co., MO 21 Sept 1902. Charles Turner
was born 31 Jan 1881 in Dallas Co., MO. They had three
daughters: Edna Pearle, b. 24 Sept 1903; Ruby Jewell, b. 28 May
1905; and Edythe Opal, b. 20 May 1908; all born in Dallas Co.,
MO.
Four years after the loss of his wife and son, Byron
remarried, this time to Susan Jane Holloman Stogsdill, widow of
Lafayette Washington Stogsdill. She was the daughter of Owen
Prady and Malissa (Boxley) Holloman. Byron and Susan were
married 12 Nov 1891 at Dallas Co., MO. Susan had been born 15
Sept 1855 in Knox Co., TN. She had first married L. W. Stogsdill
3 Oct 1872, Dallas Co., MO. They had five children which she
brought to the marriage to Byron Green Hildebrand. They were:

disease, at Fletcher Co., OK, where he was buried.
The second child of Michael Norman and Syrena Johns
Hildebrand was born 10 May 1851 (1850?) at Franklin Co., MO. She
married Calvin C. Lawson 9 March 1871 in Dallas Co., MO. He was
the son of David and Caroline Lawson and born 22 Aug 1848. He
only lived 8 and 1/2 years after the marriage. He died 9 Nov
1879 and was buried in the Phillips Cemetery near Windyville, MO.
They had three children:
(First) Syrena Elizabeth Lawson, b. 18 Sept 1872. She
married Christopher Columbus Ford 2 Aug 1888, Dallas Co., MO. He
was born 21 Apr 1871. They had one daughter, Minnie Alice, b. 20
May 1892. Minnie Alice Ford married Everett L. Phillips, son of
William Riley and Ida (Stephens) Phillips on 14 July 1912 in

Family History, J. A. McClung, 1987.
Syrena died 30 Nov 1903/4. They buried her at the old
Phillips Cemetery on the Poole farm between Windyville and Moon
Valley. The children were very small and Jimmy gave them to
Syrena's mother, Paralee, to raise. Paralee was by then the
second wife of Jimmy's uncle, John Washington Phillips. Paralee
and John Phillips reared these of her grandchildren along with
their brood. (John Washington Phillips is the greatgrandfather
of the author.)
(Third) Alice Belzora Lawson, born 16 March 1878 in Dallas
Co., MO. She married Benjamara Thomas Hicks 12 Sept 1897. To
this union were born six children: Calvin Manson, Lloyd William,
twins Ada and Sada, Jessie Jewell and Benjamin Albert Hicks.
Benjamara Thomas Hicks was born 20 Jan 1874 and died 9 Apr 1916,
burial in Lone Rock Cemetery. When a group of the Hicks and
Phillips families were headed
for Pitcher, OK for work, Laly Phillips (dau. of John Washington
Phillips) had a proposal of marriage from Everett Sweaney.
Belzora was going with them and as there was no time to prepare,
"Belzorie" lent Laly her wedding dress. Laly always remembered
that. She is the author's grandmother. Laly and Belzorie were
always best of friends and loved to get together on a Sunday
afternoon to visit.
Belzora married Collins F. Austin 29 Sept 1920. He died
three years later. Alice Belzora died 18 Nov 1953 and was buried
in Lone Rock Cem., Windyville, MO.
After Calvin Lawson died, Paralee married Ezra G. Louck 1
Sept 1885, Dallas Co., MO. The Buffalo Reflex carried this
article in the 17 Sept 1885 issue: "A correspondent sent us the
following item of news: `married Sept 1st 1885, Mr. E. Lock and
Mrs. P. Lawson. A few evenings afterward the friends came to
serenade them, but alas, they had fled. But as there were
several women among them, they searched until found and
surrounded the house and did not yield until a treat was agreed
upon cider for the boys and candy for the girls. Mr. Lock said
he never had more fun in his life. He is 75 years old.'" There
were no children born to this union and Ezra did not live much
longer.
Paralee then married John Washington Phillips 20 Dec 1888.
She brought with her the children from her marriage to Calvin
Lawson and in a few years took in her grandchildren when Syrena
died. John had four children surviving his first marriage to
Elizabeth Hildebrand (dau. of Francis & Syrena Williams H.) John
and Paralee had two more children: William Seberry and Ellis
Green Phillips. A listing of all their descendants can be found
in the Phillips Family History, 1987 by the author. Many
pictures of this family are included.
The third child of Michael Norman and Syrena Johns

The second child of Abraham and Bassheba Jones
Hildebrand was born 1827, BonHomme Twp., St. Louis, Co., MO. He
married Sarah Sullens, possibly the dau. of David Sullens as he
was appointed guardian. They were married 22 Nov 1857 (Franklin
Co. Mg. Rec.Book A). They lived in Franklin Co., MO. See 1860
census, #494, p. 63. They have two children recorded in the
Franklin Co. Birth records: Mary Ann and David.
The Franklin Co. Probates have Silas J. Hildebrand with
guardian appointed for his two children 4 Dec 1866 so it would
appear that this is the year of his death.
We have no proof that Silas J. was the son of Abraham as the
statement of heirs has not been found. We know from the 1830
census that Abraham had a son b. between 1825-30. This man's
records were found and he seems to fit into that slot in the
puzzle. Earlier we had tried to place him into the descendants
of Judge Abraham because he married a Sullens but it was obvious
that this was in error because of his birth date. We still need
proof of this connection. {1} MARY ANN HILDEBRAND
The first child of Silas J. and Sarah Sullens
Hildebrand was born 14 March 1858 in Franklin Co., MO (Birth Records of Franklin Co.) If Silas died by 1866, her mother
probably remarried and she would be in a different household.
The second child of Silas J. and Sarah Sullens
Hildebrand was born 8 Oct 1861 in Franklin Co., MO.
The third child of Abraham and Bassheba Jones
Hildebrand was born ca 1828, BonHomme Twp., St. Louis Co., MO.
She married Robert Stanton. This marriage is not recorded in
Franklin or Jefferson counties.
The fourth child of Abraham and Bassheba Jones
Hildebrand was born ca 1834 in BonHomme Twp., St. Louis Co., MO.
The fifth child of Abraham and Bassheba Jones
Hildebrand was born in the 1830s, probably St. Louis Co., MO.
His wife's name was Mary A. This marriage is not recorded in the
first two books of either Franklin or Jefferson counties, MO.
There is a James L. Hildebrand who took out land in
1856 in Dallas Co., MO in R. 18, Twp 35 and section 33 between
Francis Hildebrand and his brother, Peter.
James L. is in the 1860 census of Dallas Co. listed between
Peter and Francis Hildebrand, age 20 and residing with his
mother(?), Bersheba Owen and two Owen daughters: Camarine M. and
Angeline, ages 14 and 11. The exact date of Abraham's death
needs to be ascertained. A probate record for Abraham would list
his heirs but so far, this has not been found. A descendant
wrote that Bersheba Owens moved to Jasper Co., MO.
There is a marriage record at Dallas Co. for a James A (R?)
Hildebrand married Mary J. Smith 13 July 1876. The names and
dates fit but we would like to hear from relatives who know for
sure.
Land records at Buffalo show that William Adams was awarded his bid for $160 23rd Aug 1892 for the James L. Hildebrand land.
The second child of Isaac and Marguerite House was born
approximately 1803 probably at Marais de Liards (St. Ferdinand),
Louisiana Territory. She moved with her family to the Big River
when she was quite young. She grew up in that Meramec community.
Her father died when she was about five years old. Her stepfather, Michael Null, reared her.
The Jefferson County Marriages give an Elizabeth Hildebrand
marrying Bartlett Herrington 28 June 1829. The Herringtons were
relatives as "Pioneer John" had a daughter who married Isaac
Herrington. (Mg. Bk 1, Jeff. Co., MO) A census check needs to
be done to locate the children.
The third child of Isaac and Marguerite House Hildebrand was
born ca 1806 in Missouri. The family lived at Marais de Liards
(St. Ferdinand, St. Louis Co.) and purchased land on Big River in
1805. We know from a deed (Bk C, p. 13) at Hillsboro, MO that
Isaac's wife's name was Nancy. We do not yet have a marriage
record for them. They were living in a Catholic community and
the family is listed as Protestant in other records. Some of the
family went to St. Charles, MO to have a Protestant wedding. We
do not know yet, where Isaac and Nancy were married.
The Pyatt family has made a connection to this family. Nancy was the daughter of John Pyatt/Piatt who was listed as a witness in the probate of John Hildebrand. Nancy Hildebrand is named as an heir in the intestate proceedings of John Piatt in Jefferson County 12 Dec 1827. See Pyatt
Isaac and Nancy were listed in the 1830 census of Jefferson
Co., Merimac Twp. They do not appear in subsequent censuses for
the county so it is likely that they died.
He is probably the Isaac listed in the 1840 census index of
St. Louis Co. The original needs to be searched.
There is a record of a Nancy Hildebrand who md Wm. H.
Eagleson 5 Feb 1852 in St. Louis, MO and might be the record of
Isaac's widow.
There is a marriage record in Jefferson County for an Isaac
Hildebrand who married Miss Mathiah Wilson 6 Dec 1857. This
Isaac would probably have been born ca 1837 or earlier.
There is another record of an Isaac Hildebrand born 1842 in
the St. Louis 1880 Soundex census. He is married to Mary b.
1843. Their children are Addie M. b. 1866; David b. 1871; James
b. 1872. This Isaac may be the son of Isaac Jr with Mary a nickname for Mathiah.

The 1830 census shows a son born 1825/30 in Jeff. Co.
(2) OLIVE HILDEBRAND
The 1830 census shows a daughter born 1825-30 in
Jefferson County, MO. In 1850 Jefferson Co. (p. 426) we find Olive living with her uncle, William Peyatt and his wife Anjelica and two sons. Her mother, Nancy, was the granddaughter of Jacob and Olivia McClure Pyatt.
4. child?
There is possibility that Isaac and Marguerita House
Hildebrand had another child.
