McDANNALD

JOHN DONOLEY McDANNALD

First known generation: 1-1

The progenitor of this lineage was born ca 1725-30. It is said that he lived in Orange Co., N.C. which was formed in 1752 from Bladen, Granville and Johnston Counties. His first child may have been born in NC. He married Elizabeth __?__. The record of their marriage has not been found. They were probably Presbyterian.

John and Elizabeth moved to Augusta County, Virginia ca 1750. Their land patent in Augusta County was granted in 1751. Bath Co. was formed from Augusts in 1790. John may have died before then as we do not find him in Bath County records. Most of the Augusta County records give the name as McDonald and the Bath County records as McDannald. These differences make it difficult to differentiate between the clans.

Clyde E. McDannald has researched this family and sends us:

Dr. John Donoley (changed to McDannald) and his two brothers, Adam and Joshua, came from North Ireland about 1760 and settled in the Shenandoah Valley, in Augusta County on Mill Creek, in what is now Bath County, VA. He was a Physician.

Joshua went to Texas. Adam was in Milboro and then migrated to Indiana.

An Indenture dated July 31, 1806 shows this John McDannald was formerly John Donaly and received by Patent dated April 10, 1751 lands equaling 277 acres lying on the Cowpasture River. This land ultimately went to John McDannald, his son. This John Donaly apparently changed his name to John McDannald and thus started the (my) "McDannald" Legacy in America.
