Sewell was born 5 July 1804 in Georgia. Sewell is listed as a sibling to Hiram and Drucilla
in the 1820 Land Lottery of Hall County, Georgia. They won land in Habersham County which
was just north of Hall. We know that John McClung had moved from Wilkes to Hall County. There
is also: The Listing of Headright and Bounty Grants in GA, 1756-1909 that
shows the heirs of John McClung awarded land in Jackson County in 1812. Further work in original
records is needed to determine if these two records are referring to the same family.
The 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery shows that Sewell (transcribed as Luel) M. McClung from
Jackson County, won land in the 23rd District (Floyd Co.). He may have done what many did:
sold this land and moved elsewhere. We know that by the 1840 census, he was in Gwinnett
County. The Handybook for Genealogists
states that the courthouse in Gwinnett Co. burned in 1871 with very few records saved.
Gwinnett county was cut from Jackson County where Sewell, Jonas and Reuben were married.
Mary Ann McClung has done extensive work in this county and we will be working with her to
establish this line.
Sewell married Elizabeth Phillips 15 Sep 1828 in Jackson Co., GA.(McC J 22:14). She was born
Aug. 1804 and died Apr 1892. This family is recorded in
the 1880 census of Gwinnet Co., GA. with the record that both of Sewell's parents were
born in Virginia! There is a strong tradition among the Georgia and South Carolina lines
that they had a history in Virginia.
Sewell reared his family in Gwinnett Co., GA. We find him in the 1840 census with the four
daughters and one son, John A. By the 1850 census there are two more children: Nancy C. and
Willis H.
Sewell died 21 July 1892, but there does not appear to be a probate record of him in the
Gwinnett Co. probate office.
The first child of Sewell H. and Elizabeth Phillips McClung was born 31 Aug 1829 in Georgia.(1850c Gwinnet,
GA). She had a daughter named Tempie A. and Sewell was her guardian.
The second child of Sewell H. and Elizabeth Phillips McClung was born 23 July 1831 in GA. By 1880 she
had not married and was living with her parents.
The third child of Sewell H. and Elizabeth Phillips McClung was born 3 Mar 1834 in GA. She married
W. T. JOHNSON in 1856 in Gwinnett County. He died in Civil War with Henry C. who is the
same as Willis H. Edna McClung (nee Kilgore) said that she was the mother of Margaret C.
McCLUNG, Who married Bud HUNNICUTT. (From MaryAnn)

(sometimes called MOSLEY), who was his grandmother Pierce's maid. She had a son, James
WALLS, when she married him. They were married November 11, 1860 in in Gwinnnett County
(see Marriage records), and are buried side by side at Ebenezer Cemetery in Dacula, GA.

The fourth child of John A. and Mahulda Chapman McClung was born 12 April 1872. He died
4 February 1898. He was killed supposedly over a woman. Beulah Melton has a letter from a
relative (Shirley McGee, 623 7 1/2 St. N #5, Newton, Iowa 5028) of Vade Higgins who said
Vade killed him around 1899-1903. Vade lived in Arkansas until 1914. A cousin told a
law official and they contacted Georgia and sent a Deputy to bring Vade back to Georgia.
He escaped on the train and went back and got his wife and children and disappeared until
1950 (lived in Sherrill, Texas) when he finally contacted his family.
The fifth child of John A. and Mahulda Chapman McClung was born 29 November 1874 and

The sixth child of Sewell Henry and Elizabeth McClung was born 16 Jan 1843 in GA. By 1880 she
had not married and was living with her parents. She died December 16, 1916. Nancy had one
son, William Henry, who lived with her in Suel's home. They finally lived in a little
stone house on the property, which burned in 1916, and in which Nancy died. Edna McClung
said her mother told her that Henry's father was "Mr. Jack Chandler", and that he really
resembled him. Grover, Henry's only surviving son, did not reveal these facts on the
death certificate.
The seventh child of Sewell Henry and Elizabeth McClung was born 3 Aug 1841 in GA.
He died in the Civil War 25 Nov 1863 with W. T. Johnson, his brother-in-law.

GA. He md 7 Jan 1872 to Sarah Jane Hill (b. ca 1852; d. ca 1902) in Gwinnett Co., GA.
We do not have him in the copy of the 1850 enumeration of Gwinnett Co. He died
between 1884-5 in Gwinnett Co., GA. Most of his family moved to Oklahoma.
The first child of Taylor and Sarah Jane Hill McClung was born 1872/3 in Gwinnett Co., GA.

He stayed with Sewell, Sr. a lot and after he died, he took to Grandpa Hill. He drove him
places to preach by horse and buggy. Suel Henry's father died young and their mother reared
the children.
He was married in Stigler, Oklahoma to Bonnie Laura Brown, 25 Aug 1905 by his grandfather,
Hill who was a Baptist minister. Bonnie was born 21
Jan 1886 in Ar. to Joe Abb and Margaret Frances Bell Brown. Suel Henry's family went to OK
just days after the great
land rush. They were very upset that they were delayed in being able to rush for free land.
He called it Indian Territory (which was what it was called before statehood).
Once when he and Bonnie wer approached by people advocating birth control, he said if they
ever set foot on his property again, he would shoot them. He was a deputy sheriff at one
time and was said to be a dead shot. His means of disciplining his boys was by means of a
horse whip. When they riled him, they would take off for days until his templer cooled.
Bonnie died 5 July 1954 in Foreman, AR. He died in 30 Jan 1963 in Foreman, Little River Co. AR
just 7 miles from the OK state line. They had 13 children:

on 15 Nov 1992 in Bartlesville, OK. Both are buried in White Rose cemetery in Bartlesville, Washington County, OK.
The McClung family left Texas when John was around 3 years old and lived in several different towns. Then when
John was approximately 11 years old, the Suel Henry McClung family moved to Bartlesville, OK. They lived one mile
west of Bartlesville on Hwy 60 and just south of Hwy. 60 on Crow Road. This was where John fell from a horse and
the horse stepped on his head. The doctor put a steel plate in his forehead. Because of the accident, he had a
crooked line down the center of his forehead for the rest of his life. After he completed his education in the
Bartlesville schools he was employed by the National Zinc Company as was his father, Suel Henry McClung.
It was at a National Zinc Company picnic at Johnstone Park that he met Ethel Mae Dinsmore and they were later
married on 20 April 1929. At that time John had a Dodge Roadster.
John worked for several years at the National Zinc Company (Smelters) and then he operated the Green Valley
Dairy west of Bartlesville. He later was the foreman of the Bartlesville Block Plant. At his retirement in
1972 he had been employed by Saddoris Laundry and Dry Cleaning as an engineer for 6 years.
John especially loved popcorn, hunting and fishing. At Christmas time Rob Rowton Jr. remembered his grandpa
John would take him out in the woods and let him and the other oldest grandsons shoot mistletoe out of trees
with a shotgun. John loved teasing his grandsons and was a very easy going man. John had 2 children, 7
grandsons and 13 great-grandchildren.
His wife, Ethel Mae Dinsmore McClung, worked at the Bartlesville Public Library for 17 years and was the head
children’s librarian for 13 years. She retired in 1977. She taught Sunday school at the First Assembly of God
church for 45 years. When she was only 11 months old her father, Joseph Dinsmore, at age 31 was killed at the
Beezee Smelters in Collinsville, OK. With damp gloves, he had taken hold of some electrical wiring that had an
unwrapped area and was electrocuted. Ethel’s mother, Alice Mae Dosh Dinsmore remarried when Ethel was about 12
years old to John Edward Gaines.
John Henry and Ethel Mae had two children:

Stevensville, Erath, TX. He married Laura Mae Mueller 14 June 1933 at Salem, MN. She was
born 6 Sep 1909 at St. Paul, MN to Hugo Wolfgang and Dolly Mae Hoffman Mueller. He died
3 May/June 1959 in Elgin, Kane, IL and was buried at West Dundee Cem, in Dundee Co., IL. She
died 6 Jan 1962 at Elgin< Kane, Ill and was buried in the same place.
Elmer and his borther, Pat, moved to Minnesota where they met and married sisters, Bonnie
and Helen. Their sister, Ruby, also came there to live. Elmer left for the army before
his last son was born and returned when the son was three years old. He then managed dairy
farms. He was a good athlete, boxing and semi-pro baseball as a pitcher. He was an
excellent shot and would hunt all small game with a .22 caliber rifle (which he had given
Laura on the second anniversary); he said using a shotgun took all the sport out of hunting.
He was also very humane, keeping the baby rabbits whose mothers were killed, keeping all
the stray dogs he could, but shooting those he couldn't. He was, according to his son, not
meant for the times. He couldn't cope well with modern society, and succombed to alcoholism.
Laura Mae taught school for a while in Minnesota until her marriage. She then reared her
family until her youngest son was in his teens, at which time she began to sell Electrolux
vacuum cleaners until her death from cancer. She was the first woman salesperson for
Electrolux and one of the tops in sales in the Chicago area. She was Methodist and
attended services regularly. She was a very strong, but gentle person. She imbued the
highest qualities in her children and was very missed by them all at her parting. They had
three children:
The first child of Elmer Ollie and Laura Mae Mueller McClung was born 23 Apr 1934 at St.
Paul, MN. She married Fred Cappuccine and had two biological children: Pierre and Robin.

for five years in the Marine Corps, worked as a bartender in Washington, DC, and
finally finished the U. of TN with the Haskins & Sells excellence award in accounting. He
went to work for Ernst and Ernst in 1963. He married Mary Ann Fitzgerald 2 Apr 1960.
In 1982, he became the engagement partner on the Coca Cola Company and in 1988 was
appointed as the engagement partner on Coca Cola Enterprises. He was then appointed
the Area Quality Resource Officer. His wife, Mary Ann, is the contributor for a great deal
of information on the Sewell McClung line.

Lindsay, Garvin, OK. Herschel McClung finished his education through the 8th grade. He went on to work
on a farm. Later he worked through the Civil Conservation Corps program started by President Franklin
D. Roosevelt for young men and adults to work during the Great Depression of the 1930’s and the 1940’s.
This program put over three million to work. Hershel made $21.00 per month.
He enlisted at age 22 in the army in November 1940 at Idabel, Ok. He received his basic training at
Fort Sam Houston, Texas and was sent from there to Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He went overseas in October
1943 and landed in Ireland. From there he was sent to England and made the D-Day landing in France in
June 1944.
Herschel McClung, 26 years old, died in France of wounds he received in action on August 29, 1944 in
WWII by the Germans. He was one of three enlisted men and one officer to be awarded the Bronze Star for
maintaining a forward observation post in France during a combat raiding operation. The citation stated,
"For outstanding personal courage". The incident occurred when the enemy mortar fire cut their
telephone line. Corporal McClung, another corporal and a private immediately went out under heavy enemy
fire to track down and repair the break. In accomplishing this mission the three men were forced to
cross a road and were sprayed by German enemy machine gun fire and were killed.
His parents were notified by the War Department on September 28 that Herschel had been wounded in action
on August 29, 1944. They received a second message on October 7 that he had died on August 29, 1944 of
his wounds.
