Reuben was born 1785 in Georgia (1850c Cobb Co., GA). He was a farmer.
He married in Jackson Co., GA to Mary (Polly) Williamson 3 Dec 1806. She was born 1790.
The Jackson Co. Inventories, dated 28 July 1804 has a file on Micajah Williamson who died.
Jacob Early, decd had left Polly 10 slaves and a bed which was to be omitted from Micajah's
inventory as it was obviously a dowery. This would indicate that Jacob Early was her father
and she was a recent widow of Micajah when she married Reuben McClung. Since the 1820 census
of Jackson does not show children born before this marriage, she must not have had children
by Micajah.
She was buried in Sweetwater Baptist Church Cemetery, Douglasville.
Walnut Fork Church Minutes (near Braselton, GA):
Reuben was only 11 years old when he was gifted a black mare and 250 acres on Sandy Creek
in Rowan County, NC. This was given to him by Robert Linn. His father, John, was to hold
these assets in trust until he would come of age. At this point, we do not know his relation
to Robert Linn. Also on this deed (filed in Greene Co., GA) are three witnesses: Reuben
Bellah, Moses Bellah and Samuel Bellah. See: Greene Co. GA Deed Bk 2:258
Reuben Bellah and Robert Linn/Lynn may be grandfathers/great-grandfathers on his mother's
side.
The first members of Walnut Fork Church met at the home of Joseph Thompson on May 29,
1802 to form a constitution. The following list of members were transcribed from the
original church records to the best of our ability (only listing McClungs and relatives):
These people were listed under the heading 1802-1805. We need to check for the Early name
as well as Linns and Bellahs. [from Jackson Co. Historical Soc.
News, Oct. 1999].
During the War of 1812, Reuben served as Ensign. We have this record sent in by Marjorie
Wages:
"As the War of 1812 with England continued, it became necessary for the United States to call
for more troops. As a result, Major Tandy Key was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel detached
from the 25th regiment of the Georgia Militia, stationed in Jackson County, to be used
in the U.S. service. A Muster roll . . . organized on the 19th day of August 1814 for the
United States service under the acts of Congress of the 28th February 1795 and 18th April
1814:
The Index to the War of 1812 Service Records for Volunteer Soldiers from Georgia
lists Reuben as an Ensign under the leadership of Booth. (from Marjorie Wages)
Reuben lived in Jackson County until at least 1817 (See Tax digests). By 1827 he was
residing in Gwinnett when he made a draw in the land lottery. He was probably in that
county in 1823 when Elizabeth sold her land. It appears that several of the children
moved with her at that time. (See Hall Co. Deed Bk A)
The History of Gwinnett County, GA, from 1818-1943 by James C. Flanigan has several
references to Reuben McClung. In June 1823, the Inferior Court appointed Willian Lord,
Reuben McClung and Asa Wade as commissioners "to lay out a road nearest and best way to
the Walton County line, having for its object to meet a road from Covington towards
Lawrenceville."
Also (from same source) in June 1823, the court ordered that Reuben McClung be overseer of
the poor in Capt. Ellison's district and Elisha Winn be overseer for the poor for Capt.
Pearce's district. Reuben was also appointed to a board of trustees for the establishment
and government of free schools in Gwinnett County. This appointment was made by
the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Georgia in General Assembly in 1826.
Reuben was appointed Justice of the Inferior Court of Gwinnett County from 16 Jan 1829 to
15 Jan 1833. From the History of Gwinnett County, Georgia: "The Inferior Court
had jurisdiction over all county matters, including those later granted to the Ordinary and the
Board of County Commissioners. It had concurrent jurisdiction with the Superior Court in
civil matterrs except in titles to land. In all capital cases involving slaves and free
persons of color, it had sole jurisdiction. The scope of its jurisdiction included estates,
custody of orphans, idiots, lunatics, levying taxes, appointing road overseers, naturalizations
of aliens, advising removal of any sheriff or clerk or coroner or surveyor, filling vacancies
in the offices of the clerk and sheriff, appointing notaries public, granting marriage
licenses, issuing licenses for taverns, regulating rates, public roads, bridges, ferries
and toll bridges, . . selecting grand and petit jurors, appointing constables, naming
teachers of poor schools, issuing writs of habeas corpus in the absence of the Superior
court judge, admitting to bail and discharging from same, or remanding to jail. (from
Marjorie Wages)
At some point Reuben became a Justice of the Peace. He witnessed the land transaction for
his mother for the family home in Jackson/Hall County in 1823. He remained in Gwinnett
where he was enumerated in the 1830 census. By 1840 he was in Campbell County which was
a physical move of two counties westward. Perhaps Elizabeth had died by then.
In 1830 we find Reuben in the census of Gwinnett County. By 1840 he was listed in
Campbell County. Between 1830 and 1840, Reuben received a land grant that was probably in
Campbell County but later became Paulding County. One record says that: Reuben and Mary lived and
died in Campbell County near Douglasville, GA and Bates Township, Cobb Co., GA. Reuben
and Mary are enumerated together in 1850 Cobb Co., GA. There seem to be many boundary
changes in those counties with Campbell merged into Fulton and it no longer exists.
Campbell county records can be found in Fulton Co.
Reuben donated the land and helped found Sweetwater Baptist Church near Brownsville, GA
in Paulding County. The deed was made 26 July 1852 and recorded in Paulding County 29 May
1853. Deed Bk K:222. (Copy of deed in possession of Marjorie Wages).
They
had eight children. His property was probated in Paulding County with
Reuben B. (son) administrator. This was done in the spring of 1860. Reuben had died in
1857 and was buried in the Sweetwater Cemetery. Polly died in 1862. Her marker reads:
Polly Williamson McClung w/o Reuben McClung 1790-1862. Marjorie Wages has death dates as:
Reuben: 18 Feb 1860 and Polly 25 Jan 1864.
The first child of Reuben and Polly (Early) McClung was b. 10 Dec 1807 in Jackson Co.,
Georgia. He married Elizabeth T. Watts in 1829 in Gwinnett Co., GA. She was born 22 Feb 1809 and died 1882.

They moved to Heard Co., GA before 1840. They moved to Summersville Twp.,
Chattnooga Co., GA. In 1848 they moved to Miller Co., AR. They are listed in the 1860
census in Lafayette Co., AR. They later moved to Upshur Co., TX. The listing of the
children (below) may not be complete. There was a Nancy E. McClung living with James and
Charles H. Waldroup in Arkansas. Jonas died in 1882 in Upshur Co. TX. Note: we have not
found him in the 1880 census there. He and Elizabeth were buried in Pleasant Grove Cem.

He married Harriet L.Baker and when he died, she applied for widow's pension. This is
listed in the State of Texas: H. L. McClung, wife of Overton Crasby McClung dated Aug.
1909. She states that she is 75 years old, has lived in Atlanta, TX 33 years, was born
in Polk co., TN. She and Overton C. were married 4 July 1854 in Polk Co., TN.. She
states that Overton's command was originally organized in Arkansas. He enlisted in the
winter of 1861 and served to the close of the war. The company was Grinstead's Regiment,
John Nations Co. in the latter part of the war. The first part was in the infantry and
latter half was in cavalry. He was in Co. E, Regt 6th Louisiana Cavalry. The war dept.
has no record of these but witnesses said they served with him in Co. E. Rgt 6th LA Cav.
Affidavit of Witnesses for H.L. McClung were R. H. Porter and W. W. McClung.
He died 7 Jan 1892 at Atlanta,Cass, TX and was buried at Pine Crest, Atlanta, TX.

I have a xerox of a Bible record sent to me by a Baggett descendant which shows the
following:
Jackson Baggett, 1 Oct. 1812 - 27 June 1863, is buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery south of
Douglasville, Douglas County, Ga. Nancy N. Baggett, 2 Aug. 1817 - 20 Nov. 1869, is buried

On the 1840 census of Campbell (now Douglas) County, Jackson Baggett's household included
only himself and wife and a young male aged under 5 (son James Baggett). On the 1850 census
of Campbell County, (Richard) Franklin McClung is shown in the Jackson Baggett household as
Franklin "Baggett," aged 13: Jackson Baggett 38 NC, Nancy 34, Franklin 13, James 11.
Richard F. McClung died as 1st Sgt. of Company K, 41st Ga. Infantry, CSA, at Lauderdale

record has not been located. In the 1840 census of Campbell Co. GA, his wife was listed as

William was a resident of Gwinnett County in 1832 when he drew in the lotteries for Cherokee
lands. He won land in Dist. 17, Sec. 2, Lot 149 in Cherokee County. He also drew for land
in Walker County on the Chickamauga River but we don't know if he won that land. The
Cherokee County Deed Index shows that William W. sold to Andrew Dow in 1843 (Deed Bk 4:268)
He may not have moved there as he is shown in Campbell Co. in 1840.
By 1850 they were still in Campbell Co. (need this transcription). They had 13 children,
all born in Georgia. This family moved to Arkansas about 1860. They lived at Bright Star,
Sulphur Fork Twp, Lafayette Co. Ark. They bought sizeable tracts of land in both Arkansas and
Texas. They both died at Bright Star, AR: William in 1863
and Mary in 1869.
When the Civil War began, William McClung's sons left their farms and joined the Confederate Army.
Joseph Wilson, William J., and Leonard J. joined the 19th Texas Infantry and fought under Gen. Richard
Taylor in the Trans-Mississipp Theater. William and Leonard died while in the army. The youngest son,
James R. joined the 3rd Arkansas Infantry and survived the war. Joseph Wilson was shot in the lung
at the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry, AR in 1864 and survived it.
After the war the surviving McClungs moved into Texas and settled around Dallas. (Michael Patterson,
researcher)
In this William W., the "W" is for Wilson. This is confirmed by his descendants; his ggrandchildren. In addition,
the middle name of two of his sons was Wilson. The family does not remember if it is a family name. [fam]
Mary Ann Drummon(d) was not his second wife. She was born in 1810-1811 in SC based on the 1850 Campbell County,
Georgia census. Her headstone reads 1811-7/5/1868.
Between January and October, 1855 William Wilson’s children, George Anderson, James Riley, William M. (who is
William Jackson), Leonard Jamison, Mary Malinda and Nancy Caroline, (along with John McClung’s son James)
attended Dark Corner School in Campbell County Georgia. [Roll Call, Dark Corner School, Campbell County

of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Miller County. Her father, Daniel’s will uses Drummond. Her parents were
immigrants from Ireland.
The first child of William W. and Mary Ann Drummonds McClung was born 27 Mar 1832 in
Gwinnett Co. GA. He married Amanda Endsley who was b. 1 Apr 1836, Coweta, GA to (Samuel)
Joseph and Ellen Cannon Neil Endsley. She died 30 Dec 1920.
Joseph McClung was a farmer and deacon of the Baptist Church.
They lived in Drane, TX where Amanda was born. Joseph Wilson McClung died in 1906 (maybe
in AR) They had nine children.
Joseph Wilson referred to himself as the first-born, according to his grandchildren, and was referred to as the
first-born by Samuel Wilson McClung. His grandson, Robert L. McClung referred to him as the “oldest of
13 Children”. [fam]
Amanda Endsley was not born in Drane, Navarro County, Texas, she and Joseph W. McClung were married in Drane, Navarro
County, Texas on February 27, 1953 [according to Amanda’s application for his Civil War pension] . Amanda was born
in Georgia. [fam] The Endsley’s were among the first pioneers in Texas, owned quite a bit of land.
"The Enon Baptist Church, located about three miles north-east of Ravana, Miller County, Arkansas, was constituted
on the Second Sunday in November, 1865, with fourteen charter members as follows … Wilson and Amanda McClung"
[Ravana Arkansas and the Enon Baptist Church, Bloomburg County Texas Historical Society, by Alice Brown]
Joseph W. McClung made application on August 13, 1900 for his Confederate Pension at Lisbon, Dallas County,
Texas and was approved on Septemer 17, 1900. He was 68 years old at the time of the application. He served in
Company D, 19th Texas Infantry for 2 years. He was injured by a gun shot in the right lung. He was living with
his son William Israel McClung and Daughter-in-Law in the area of Lisbon, Dallas County, Texas. W. I. McClung and
Amanda McClung (his wife) signed as witness to his application. In 1906, following William W.’s death on August 17,
1905, his widow Amanda amended his pension application. She indicated that he “servied 2 years and 3 months, he
entered in May 1862 and served until wounded” but could not remember the dates of his discharge.
There is a family story that was told by William’s son, Samuel Wilson that goes like this: William W. and Amanda
McClung were living on a little farm near Little Rock Arkansas during the Civil War. At the time William W. had
a younger brother who was about 16 at the time (John Franklin McClung b 1852 would have been 12 or so, too young
for serving in the war so he’s the more likely suspect). At any rate, Amanda had been informed by a returning
soldier of the fact that her husband had been injured in the war and knew the battle and where it was fought. She
knew where to look for her husband so she and the younger brother loaded up a wagon and went to get him. They found
him hiding in a storm cellar along with several other wounded soldiers. He had taken a musket ball in the side
just below the ribs, passing all the way through. There were maggots in the wound when he was found. She loaded
him up in the wagon, he survived the ride home and she got him well enough that he took off walking back to the
War when he healed up. By the time he got back to his Company the war was over so he had to walk all the way
back home again. [fam]

Calvin A. J. Brown. They lived at Eagle Lake, TX. They had nine children: Cora, Myrtle, Oliver,

The 1870 Census of Douglasville, Davis County Texas, lists her as Montriella [family members remember that Mountsie
was short for something, but they didn’t know what] Mountsie’s husbands name was W.L. Brown. [R.L. McClung, her nephew]
He is also referred to as Calvin Brown. (BarbMc)

at Fayetteville, TN to John Thomas and Mary
Louise French McCauley. They homesteaded 160 acres on State Highway 18, south of Tipton, OK, 3 miles west and 3 miles
north of Davidson--on the northeast corner of the intersection.
Samuel W. died 5 Apr 1934 at Davidson, OK and was buried at the
Davidson Co., Cem. in Tillman County..
"My next recollection after that phone call was arriving at the homestead after Sam's death
-- they had him laid out in the living room in his casket and there was a steady stream of
people coming by, going in one door by the casket and out another, standing in the yard and
talking like country folk always did. It was Edna that walked me by the casket so I could
see him - he looked very dead. I'm not sure, but I think they had the funeral in the
house and then went from there to the cemetery in Davidson. I don't remember a service
anywhere else - the house was full of floral arrangements and people. I was told that for
a few days before his death they had been troubled by some wild dogs harassing the calves
and milk cows at night - they had spotted one of them that day and Sam, Joe, Milas and a
neighbor had given chase to kill it. On returning home, Sam began to suffer from severe
shortness of breath, and passed out and died in a few minutes --clearly a heart attack
from overexertion - no doubts lots of plugged arteries -they were big on lots of pork and
he likely consumed a pounds of lard a day most of his life." Pat McClung 2001

Samuel Wilson McClung Homesteaded 160 acres on State Highway 18, south of Tipton, OK, 3 miles west and 3 miles
north of Davidson--on the northeast corner of the intersection. The McClung, McAfee and Mahanay families left
the Seagoville, Dallas County, Texas area in about 1908 (after Oklahoma became a state) and moved to the Tillman
County, Oklahoma (former Indian land). They leased two boxcars. They loaded the farming equipment in and the
livestock in the other. The man partitioned off part of the boxcar with the livestock and traveled in that
boxcar with the livestock. At the time, there was no direct train route to Oklahoma so the trip took them
almost 6 weeks and took them to Kansas City before taking them back toward Oklahoma. They had to stop the train
every 24 hours to graze and water the livestock as was a regulation at the time. The women and children were in
wagons with all their other possessions. [Story related by R.L. McClung, Sam’s Son]

I am a descendant of William Wilson McClung (GA020), second son of Reuben B. McClung (although I have not been
able to confirm that to date). I am not a genealogist so please forgive any amateur blunders that I have
committed and I am sure much of the information that is found, to me is common knowledge to you.
I have listed the source information in [ ]. The information comes from personal knowledge [pers], stories that
have been told to me by my father and various aunts, uncles and cousins [fam]. The information also comes from a
genealogy that was written by my grandfather, Robert Lee McClung in 1965 [R.L. McClung] I am sure that much his
information is from his memory and I have (and continue to) research and confirm it constantly. I have not
included the specific names of some of the sources that are family members, but have verified their information
through census records, cemetery visits, etc. wherever possible. I have also not listed any names or information
on anyone that I know or believe to be living. The information follows Jonas McClung (GA073).
