Jonas, the second child of John and Elizabeth (Bellah?) McClung, was born in 1787 in GA (1850c Fayette,
GA). He married Rebecca (or Rebekah)
Reed (click to see Reed-Rogers families)
1 Dec 1808 in Jackson Co. GA. She was born in South Carolina in 1792. Jonas moved to
Tennessee before 1820 as they are enumerated in Giles County with 5 boys under 10 and 3
girls under 10. His wife was given as age 16-26 and he over 45. We need to see this
original census to confirm this. Giles is north of the Tennessee River and on the AL line.
Deed records from Giles would give us the time he moved to TN.
We also having him witnessing in 1823, the land tranaction of his mother, Elizabeth to Robert Sexton. This was the family home--250 acres on Walnut Fork--in Jackson Co., later included in Hall county. Elizabeth was living at the time in Gwinnett Co. with several of her children.
Land records at the Huntsville Land Office in northern Alabama records Jonas McClung
purchasing land 23 Apr 1827 in Sec. 14, Twp 14, Range 13W and states that he came from Giles
Co., TN. then 5 Jan 1837 (ten years later) he purchases land in the same section and it
states that he is from Marion County, AL. At that time, Marion was a large county and
included what later became Fayette County. The 1830 Census of Marion Co.,AL finds Jonas
with four sons and four daughters and wife no longer with them. The oldest children may
have married by then. They had possibly twelve children and most of them moved from Fayette
Co.
The first child of Jonas and Rebecca Reed McClung was a daughter born ca 1812 in GA.. She married
by 1830 and was living with her husband, Wesley Dodson in Marion County. He was born ca 1811
in SC. A few years
later they moved to Fayette County. We have their enumeration for 1860. Levica and Wesley had eight sons and four daughters
born between 1831 and 1857. Levica died prior to 1867. Wesley moved to Mississippi as
did most of their children. Wesley married twice more and died in Chickasaw, MS. Among
Levica's children were several sons who fought in the Confederate Army. (From Winding Trails
by Sharlene McGee Stough, contributed by Sharon Taylor).

was b. between 1815-20. He married Frances Powell who was born
in 1811. She was the daughter of Ezekiel Powell and his wife, Peggy Rosmond. These
Powells were also early Bluff settlers.
Elias and Frances had at least five children. After Elias's death (1840-60), his widow
married Edwin Harris who died in 1862. Therefore Elias's death probably occurred in the late
1840s or 50s.

The child of Jonas and Rebecca Reed McClung (?). We have not found this man listed as
a head of household in a census, although our records are not complete.
Note: there may be another son, Joseph, but he was not named in the will of Jonas. So if
he was a son, he died before 1867 and had no children.
Note about an Elias which may or may not belong to Jonas:
He enlisted in the Confederate Army, went to New Orleans and was brought home sick. He
recovered and returned to his unit then at Tupelo, MS. he again became ill and was sent
home and died with hemorrage of the lungs and was buried in the Hepzilah Church Yard.
The sources for this research were from Mae Price and the newspaper article by Sharlene
M. Stough provided by Sharon Taylor. There were also abstracts of early AL records provided
by Suzy Burt and the 1880 census records. We hope there will be further research to clarify
differences.
