1-3 The John and Nancy Luster McClung Family

Researcher: Bill Davenport

When John (GA001) moved to Morgan County, Alabama in the early 1820s, he remarried for a third time. It is likely that John’s second wife died in AR or AL. In 1824 John married Nancy Luster. From Nancy's widow's pension applications, we learn that they were married 11 Oct 1824 in St. Clair County, Alabama. The children of John McClung’s second marriage were taken and reared by Nancy.

Morgan County is just south of Madison and Limestone where the Tennessee McClungs had moved. St. Clair County bordered Blount on the south. Blount County is where John's son, Robert moved. Morgan County was on the northern boundary of Blount.

John states that he moved to McMinn County, Tennessee when it was formed from Indian lands. It was called the Hiwassee Purchase. He lived there two years. It was in McMinn in 1827 that he made his first application for a pension based on his service in the revolution. By 1830 we find him in the census in Overton County. Overton had been cut from Smith County where John moved next.

The 1830 census shows him age 60-70 (he was 67) with wife age 40-50. His family is:

Female age 15-20 (b. 1810-15, from 2nd mg) Probably Margaret Amanda, b. 1815, SC
Male age 10-15 (b. 1815-20, from 2nd mg: probably John S. b. c 1816)
Female age 10-15 (b. 1815-20, from 2nd mg--Probably Julia Ann, b. c1819-20)
Female age 5-10 (1820-25) Probably from 2nd Mg
Female under 5 (b. 1825-30) Almira born 1825 to Nancy.
Male under 5 (b. 1825-30) Probably James Buford, child of Nancy, b. c1829

John McClung died in the county of Sumner in the state of Tennessee on or about the 24th day of September AD 1844.

Nancy is found in the 1850 census of Sumner Co., TN. (P.1000 #395) She is given as age 63 and born in TN. Her daughter, Almira is 25 born in TN. They have two-year-old Mary with them also born in TN who is probably a granddaughter.

Nancy made her original pension application in Franklin County, Illinois and was probably living with John McClung, Jr. He signed as witness on her application. John Jones (probably son in law and husband of Julia Ann) and John McClung gave affidavit as persons well acquainted with said Nancy McClung.

In 1860 Nancy was living with her daughter Julia Ann and husband John Jones in Pope County, AR where she gave her place of birth as Virginia and age as 76.

Nancy was still living in Arkansas in 1870 with her daughter Amanda Scott:
1870 Census, Van Buren County, AR; Davis Township; 15 June 1870

Listed at dwelling 21:

Scott, Nancy A. 13 F W; MO
Scott, Sidney A. 11 F W; MO
Scott, Lola Montez 4 F W;AR

The grave of Nancy Luster McClung might be found in Van Buren County, AR. and those records should be searched.

17-4 ALMIRA/ARMINDA McCLUNG
GA2501

Based on the statement of John McClung’s 1827 pension application and census record of 1850, this daughter whose name is listed as Almira, Aminday, Amanda, Arminda, and possibly other similar names, is the first child of John McClung and Nancy Luster. She was born in 1825 in Alabama. (It was stated in the 1850 census that she was born in Tennessee, however the 1870 and 1880 censuses state she was born in Alabama.)

Almira, living with mother Nancy McClung had one child named Mary, age two according to the 1850 census for Sumner County, Tennessee. In that census, she was listed as a McClung.

From Franklin County, Illinois records, we find a marriage between Arminda R. McClung and William S. Scott on April 17, 1856.

By the 1860 Census, they are in Randolph County, Arkansas, (Davidson Township, Post Office: Blacks Ferry, 22 August 1860) two doors down from John McClung, her brother. They are listed on P. 34 (household/dwelling 263/263): William S. Scott 30 M farmer KY and Arminda R. 35 F AL, with children:

Mary D. 14 F TN
Thomas I. 11 M IL
Mary I. 8 F IL
William G. 7 M IL
Nancy A. 3 F MO
Sidney A. 1 F MO

Bill Davenport found this reference and states:
It is also obvious that this was a second marriage for both. Arminda's daughter Mary, we saw in the 1850 census. Thomas, Mary and Willliam are his from first marriage. Nancy and Sidney are theirs together.

The 1870 census for Van Buren County, Arkansas, Davis Township, dated 15 June 1870 shows:

1-5 MARY MCCLUNG
GA2502

Apparently Mary is the child of Almira and unknown father. She was born about 1848 in TN. This child, age two, was enumerated with Nancy Luster McClung and Almira in the 1850 census for Sumner County, TN.

18-4 JAMES BUFORD McCLUNG
GA2503

The second child of John McClung and Nancy was born ca 1822-8 in TN. He was for a time in Sumner County, TN, then moved to Kentucky. He was married and had five daughters. Before 1850 he had moved to Franklin Co., IL where we find his family: Molly McClung, age 23,born TN and two daughters, Tabitha, age 3, and Matilda, age 1, both born IL. He was not with them. This was James McClung's first wife and first two daughters. Matilda must be the child also known as Sidney. Franklin Co., IL is where Nancy Luster McClung applied for widow's pension in 1855. We are left to wonder the whereabouts of James B. during this census.

He was officially a resident of Jefferson County, Illinois in April, 1855, when he made an affidavit for Nancy Luster McClung’s pension application and he was probably in Yellville, Arkansas in January, 1857 when his mother made application to have her pension paid in that state rather than Illinois. When Molly died, he left his daughters with the Shakers at Shakertown in South Union, KY 6 Sep 1860. The Shakers had four family houses or communal dwellings that housed approximately 75 people each. (Research by H.R.McClung, J 29:17; and Bill Davenport)

Butler county Missouri Census 1860 file name page 589, 104/108:
McClung, Jas (age,gender)38 M, White, farmer (RE: 100) born: Tennessee
McClung, Molly, 32 F, W, house keeper, b.Tennessee
Children: Tabitha,13 F W,KY; Seancey, 12 M W, IL; Nancy, 6 F W,IL; Mary, 4F W, Ill, John 1M MO.

Bill Davenport found the 1870 census enumeration for James B.:
1870 Federal Census, Ewing Township, Frankin County, Illinois. (In the original this has no number:
93/93 McClung, James (age,gender) 42m; born TN (PP/RE)500/200
Sophronia (age, gender) 26 f; born in IL; Keeping house
Children: Sarah J, 7 f Ark; James M, 5m IL; Martha, 4 f IL;Hettie, 3 f IL; Sophronia, 1 f IL

The 1880 Census of Logan County Arkansas (FHL Film 1254050 National Archives Film T9-0050 Page 189A) shows that James B. had remarried probably in Illinois as his wife, Sophronia, was born there in 1844. Their first child was born in 1862 in Arkansas. However that was a quick trip because in 1865 they had returned to Illinois where the next three children were born. The birthplaces of their children reveal the moves this family made. By 1870 they were in Kentucky, then in 1872 in Ill, in 1874 somewhere in Missouri (visiting her mother's family?), then from 1876 to 80 they were in Logan County, AR. James B. seems to have taken after his father in the way he moved his family around.

See: James Buford Civil War Records as donated by Bill Davenport.

1-5 TABITHA McCLUNG
GA2504

The first child of James Buford and Molly McClung was born 1848 in TN or KY. She was in the 1860 census with her parents as born 1847 in KY. Tabitha shows up on the 1862 census of Shakertown when she was 14. We have no further record of her.

2-5 SIDNEY McCLUNG
GA2505

The second child of James Buford and Molly McClung, his first wife, was born ca 1848/9 in IL (1860 c). When her mother died, she was placed with her sisters in the Shakertown community. She left this community 16 Sep 1864 for the "world". By 1867 Sidney had returned to South Union as she is listed in the census of that year. On Thursday, May 16, 1867, she joined a group of Shakers on a picnic "to the knob north of the village, on an excursion -- swinging and pleasure with feasting." However on Tues. Oct 18, 1867, "GONE AGAIN --Sidney McClung, 2nd or 3rd time for poor foolish thing, left this morning--took the cars for Bowling Green."

In the Federal Census of 1880 we find "Sydney" living in Christian Co., KY, Hopkinsville District, and married to Jerome Simmons. They had three daughters: Idah age 8, Lizzie age 5 and Elberda, age 2.

3-5 NANCY ELLEN McCLUNG
GA2506

The third child of James Buford and Molly McClung, his first wife, was born in 1854 in IL. She was probably named for her grandmother, Nancy Luster. She was listed in the censuses of the Shakertown community from 1866 to 1872. Then in the 1870 Federal Census for Clay Precinct, Logan County, Kentucky, dated September 30, 1870 under household 403/403, on page 60 are Nancy McClung, age 17 IL and Dora McClung, age 13 IL.

In July of 1872 Nancy left the Community at Shakertown.

Nancy Ellen married Andrew Jackson Simmons. See Christian Co. Marriage Record. They are in the 1920 census for Christian Co., KY. Both are age 64 and living next door to son, Herbert. She was listed as Nannie E., born in Illinois. A. J. was likely a brother to Jerome Simmons who married Sydney. Researcher: Bill Davenport.

4-5 MARY McCLUNG
GA2507

The fourth child of James Buford and Molly McClung, his first wife was born 1856 in Illinois. She was enumerated with her family in the 1860 census of Butler County, Missouri. She was admitted to the Shaker community in 1860. She is not in their notes in 1862 so we can only speculate what might have happened to her. She may have stayed with relatives in MO or Arkansas.

5-5 DORA McCLUNG
GA2508

The fifth child of James Buford and Molly McClung, his first wife, was born in 1858 probably in KY. She was left with the Shakers when only three years old. She lived in the Centre Family Building with Nancy and Sidney, her older sisters. She continued to be a member of the Shaker colony at South union until Thursday, March 21, 1878 when the journal notes "absconding-- Dora McClung departed today--Has been on the fence for years."

1870 Federal Census for Clay Precinct, Logan County, Kentucky, dated September 30, 1870 under household 403/403, on page 60 are Nancy McClung, age 17 IL and Dora McClung, age 13 IL. They were recorded in the Shakertown community: the colony ran from the bottom of page 58 through page 64. Bill Davenport, researcher.

We have no further record of her at this time.

6-5 JOHN McCLUNG
GA2509

The sixth child of James Buford McClung was born 1859 in MO. He is shown as one year old in the Butler Co., MO Census. We do not know at this time what happened to this boy. There is no mention of him being left at Shakertown with the girls. He may have died in 1860; his mother, Molly apparently died in 1860, too. (He is not in MO 1880 census).

7-5 SARAH McCLUNG
GA2510

The child of James Buford and Sophronia McClung was born in 1862/3 in Arkansas (probably Yell or Logan County). She was the eldest of this second family.

GA2512

The ninth child of James Buford and Sophronia McClung was born Sept 1866 in Illinois. She married Ancil Anderson Ray after his first wife (Mary Jane Kitchens) died. (Brenda Hawkins, researcher). Ancil and Mattie married 27 Feb 1896 in Saline Co., AR. She was age 30 and he was 46 and a widow.

She and Ancil A. Ray had seven children. She died after 1917

The eleventh child of James Buford with his second wife Sophronia McClung was born 4 Mar 1869 in Louisville, Kentucky. She married John C. Earl 13 July 1885 in Searcy, White Co.,AR. She was 18 and he 30. John was born 1855 in NC and both his parents born in NC (1920 c Creek Co., OK). They moved to Creek Co. OK before 1907. They are enumerated in the 1920 census in Drumright Township with children: Paul C.M. age 13, Teddie Ray age 10 and Corrine Earl, age 8 all children born in OK. John C. is listed as a lawyer. Sophronia (Frona) died 11 Oct 1951 and was buried in Idabel, McCurtain County, OK, near the Texas border. (Bill Davenport, researcher)

19-4 JOHN (S?) McCLUNG
GA2521

The third child of John and Nancy Luster McClung was born ca 1831 in TN. He was found in the 1860 Randolph County, Arkansas Census in Davidson Township, Post Office: Blacks Ferry, dated 22 August 1860 (Page 33, Household/dwelling = 261/261). John McClung 29 M Farmer 45 TN and Martha 27 F Housekeeper, born in KY. They have two children: John W. 7 M IL and Albert 2 M AR

John McClung married Martha Ann Menasco born ca 1833 in KY. Marriage date approx 1851. Two children John W. McClung, born ca 1853 and Albert, born ca 1858.

The birthplaces of the children show that they also went to Illinois before coming to Arkansas. In 1853 they were in Illinois. Some of this family was in Kentucky for a while and maybe that is where he met Martha. They were probably married about 1851.

By 1880 this family had moved to Marion County, Arkansas at Water Creek. John is listed with wife, Catherine, born 1836 in NC. and with three children born in the 1870s. Albert is at Buffalo Fork living with the Laffoon family from KY and John is also at Water Creek, near father. We wonder if the Elizabeth Laffoon born 1830 in KY was an aunt, possibly a relative of his mother?

1-5 JOHN W. McCLUNG
GA2522

The first child of John and Martha McClung was born ca 1853 in Illinois. He was enumerated with the family in Randolph County, AR in 1860. By 1880 he is enumerated in Marion County AR with wife, Sarah, born 1859 in Arkansas. They had no children listed so they were probably recently married.

2-5 ALBERT McCLUNG
GA2523

The second child of John and Martha McClung was born ca 1857 in Arkansas, probably Randolph County. By 1880 he is enumerated with the Elizabeth Laffoon family at Buffalo Fork, Marion County, AR. His birth is given as 1857. He stated that his father was born in Kansas and mother in Arkansas. He was a laborer on the Laffoon farm and had not yet married.

3-5 NUMAN McCLUNG
GA2524

The third child of John and Martha McClung was born ca 1861 in Arkansas, probably Randolph County. By 1880 he is with John and Catharine in Marion County, Arkansas and listed as a son. He gave the birthplace of his mother as NC but that was his step-mother, possibly the only mother he remembered.

3-5 NANCY McCLUNG
GA2525

The child of John and Catharine McClung was born ca 1871 in Arkansas, probably Marion County.

4-5 CARDELA McCLUNG
GA2526
