Hiram was born ca 1805 in Georgia, (tombstone & 1860 census) the son of John and Elizabeth McClung.
Hiram is first mentioned in Georgia Records in the Land
Lotteries as an orphan along with Sewell and Drucilla. It is not known that they won in
this lottery but they were listed as drawers. Probably Elizabeth knew that orphans were allowed
a draw. From the 1820 census of Georgia, it appears that Hiram remained in the home with
Elizabeth and was enumerated with John Jr. the head of household in Hall County. Hall had a
strip of land that was cut from Jackson County when it was formed. By 1830 Hiram is listed
as a head of house in Henry County.
His first wife is unknown. (It is possible that he
was first married to Margaret Jones in Carroll county, Georgia 14 Nov 1824 as Reuben H.
McClung.) The first wife was born ca 1805 and probably died in 1830s.
He married 2nd to Alcey Nix who was born 1823 in Georgia. He was probably married to Alcey
in Georgia as their eldest son was born in Georgia. They named a son Jeremiah which is not
a McClung name. However, a Jeremiah Nix had a daugther, Alice. See: NIX Family
In 1827 Hiram, Jonas and Reuben were in Gwinnett County where they drew in the land lottery
for Muscogee Co., Dist. 16 and Section 12. It is not likely that he won this drawing as he
drew again five years later. In 1830 he was enumerated in the census in Henry County which is just south of Gwinnett
County where Sewell lived. We checked the deed index for Henry County and Hiram was not listed.
In 1832 Hiram won land in the Gold Lottery that created Cherokee County. He was a
winner of lot #960 in Dist. 21, Section 2. We have found no record for how he disposed of
this land. Cherokee may have been divided by the time he sold. We have not found Hiram in
the 1840 or 50 censuses of Georgia. Often the McClung name is mutilated in the enumeration or
in the transcripition and indexing. A more thorough search needs to be done, especially in
Henry County.
Hiram's family moved to Randolph County, Alabama ca 1853. In 1860 we find them
at Rockdale, Randolph Co. (p.420). It is interesting that Alcey gave her profession as a
weaver. In 1880 Hiram and Alcey were living in Rockdale township of Randolph Co.,AL.
Some marriages in Carroll County may belong to Hiram's first family:
Mary who md William McElroy 1847
Rhoda Ann md Mathy Roberts 1850
Alphus md Nancy J. E. Little 16 Nov 1853
An article was written about Hiram's family. We cannot
vouch for its total veracity but it is interesting. Submitted by Kathy Hayes.
Possibly the first child of Hiram Reuben and his first wife was born 1820-25 in GA. She
married William McElroy 2 Feb 1847 in Carroll Co., GA. When the family moved to Randolph
County, AL, she and her husband moved also. They are enumerated there in the 1860 census
with six children. They are all recorded as born in AL but the more likely scenario was that
the enumerator forgot to ask the place of birth and filled them in later with AL. Most of
this family moved in 1853.
Their children were: Adaline b. 1848; Mize b. 1850; James b. 1852; Hiram b. 1853; Jackson
b. 1854; Eliza McElroy b. ca 1859. Polly was listed as a weaver by trade.
Possibly the first son of Hiram (and his first wife) McClung was born 7 June 1824/5 in
Georgia. (See 1830 c Talbot Co., GA).
(Note: in the 1880 census, he and his wife report they were both born in GA and both
their parents born in GA. Maryann Genzel, researcher.
William E. married 23 Dec 1849 in Carroll Co., GA. to Malinda Hatley (b. 17 Feb 1827; d.
7 Aug 1884). She was a sister
to L. Jane Hatley who md Wm. E's younger brother, Samuel H. McClung. His first two sons
were born in Randolph Co. AL.
In 1850 William is enumerated in the Carroll County Census. His age is given
incorrectly as 36 instead of 26 as subsequent censuses bear out. His brother and 3 or 4
sisters are living with him. Oddly, Malinda is not enumerated with them. Mary b. 1832,
Samuel b. 1833, Betsy b. 1835, Rebecca b. 1836 and Mahala b. 1837 are in this household.
William E. was in the Randolph Co. Al. 1860 census and he is listed as Elias 35 yrs., with
wife Malinda 35, son John H. 8, son J.H. 7; Nancy A. 4, Mary A. 3, and Wm M 1.
There is also a separate listing for Samuel and one for Hiram age 55, wife Alcey 37,
Elizabeth 24 (listed as an idiot), Mahala 17, Hiram J. 15, Jese 11,
Malinda 3 and Reuben 8/12. It appears that William E. and Samuel moved to Randolph County
with Hiram Sr.
We have a record of Elias McClung, Pvt in Co. G, 22nd. Regt., Alabama Inf. He was a prisoner of war, captured
under command of Maj. Gen. Thomas, Comds. Dept. Cumberland on 25 Nov 1863 at Missionary
Ridge. He was forwarded to Capt. S. E. Jones, Provost Marshall at Louisville, KY 5 Dec 1863. He
was transferred for exchange on 2 Mar 1865.
We have not yet found his enumeration in the 1870 census.
About 1872, he and his brother, Samuel H. McClung left Alabama and moved to the Weldon
settlement in
Louisiana, travelling by river raft and wagon train. The first house they lived in was a
big log house and he still lived there when he died 25 July 1897.
W.E. McClung is found in the Claiborne Co. LA 1880 c. (p. 231A) with wife Malinda and
five of their children. He stated that he was 54 years old and born in GA. That would have
been 1826. According to the births of his children, they were in Georgia until ca 1858. By
1859 they were in Alabama with three children. They have children being born in 1863 and
1864 in AL when Elias was a prisoner of war in Kentucky. This might indicate that the civil
war service was that of the Elias named in the will of Jonas.
In 1896 William Elias had given 2 1/2 acres of land to the Concord Church for a cemetery
and the deed is recorded in the Claiborne Parish Court house. Wm. E. died 25 June 1897; he
was buried in the
Weldon cemetery beside his wife, Malinda who had been buried previously at Weldon Cemetery
at Homer, LA. He has a confederate marker.
(Researcher: Maryann Gentzel and Shirley Kitchen)
By the 1900 census, very few of his descendants are still enumerated in Claiborne, LA.
William Moses and Jessie McClung are there with two households belonging to Samuel H.
Perhaps some of the daughters had married but others seem to have moved on.
The first child of William Elias and Malinda Hatley McClung was ab. 1 June 1852 in Georgia

Maryann Gentzel has this: There were 8 children. Three died young. I have photos of the
graves. Hiram Joseph married Texanna Bays of Troup County, Ga. I believe that they married
in La., not Ga. or Al. The children in order are as follows:

married Sarah Jane Gathright 7 Nov 1886 by Rev. J. E. Knighten. She was b. 16 Mar 1869 in AR;
d. 13 July 1962. William was born in Alabama. He is quoted as saying "I came with mamma
and papa by wagon train and river raft to Louisiana when I was about 14 years old".
William Elias, Samuel Meaks McClung and their families all came to the Weldon Settlement
together.. William Moses bought the land of William Elias McClung from sister Nancy Ann
McClung Spears a couple of years after William Elias died. He moved over the log house
where William Elias lived and died and that was the first home of several of his children.
Part of the house was still standing in 1975. He owned 300 acres. He gave 2 1/2 acres to
Concord Church.
About 1911 he sold most of his land and moved to Homer to be near the schools. There he
bought several small pieces of land and one large 500 acre tract. They lived on the "Oaks
Place" first, located on Dutchtown road, and then in 1915 moved to "Guice place", then moved
to the "Aubry place" back on Dutchtown Road. He sold these pieces of land after each move
and last he was on the 500 acres when they discovered oil on the land. In 1919 he bought
some land from his son-in-law, Frances Nickolas Moore, and he built the "Big House". It was
considered one of the finest homes in the area and is still a lovely old hom. the land around
the "Big House" has been sold off but 3 of his children live on what was the original property
and there is a "McClung Street" on part of the property. The Big House is located on Main
St., Homer, LA, across the street from the Homer High School. One son, Ozzie, now owns and
lives in the Big House. The 500 acre tract of land went into the McClung Estate and has now
been divided into 100 acre tracts and the 5 children drew lot number for dividing the 100
tracts between the 5, each now owns 100 acres. During the depression, the money from the oil
was used and the wells went dry but Wm. Moses kept the land.
When William Moses lived in the Weldon Area, he was considered a leader of the community and
after church the members would all gather at the McClungs for dinner and singing. William
Moses had an organ in his home and the house was always a gathering place for friends. After
he moved to Homer, he continued to be a leader in church and community affairs and was a
member of the board of directors at the Commercial National Bank, now Homer National Bank.
He has a grandson that was later a vice-president and manager of a branch of this bank.
William Moses was a farmer and worked hard all his life and died at age 66 of pneumonia after
suffering most of his life with a lung condition. He was a tall, lanky person as most of his
sons are, but his wife, Sarah Jane Gathright, was a frail looking, but strong in Character,
little lady. They werre members of Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist church. She remained a member
until she died at the age of 93 in 1962.

in Homker until her death in a car accident on St. Valentine's Day in 1923. She was like
a second monther to her four brothers and one sister, seeing they dressed properly and
lived up to the high moral standards set by her parents. She gave much of her time during
her married life helping her husband deliver U.S. mail on rought country roads. It was on
one of these days taht the Model T roadster she was driving turned over in a ditch and she
lost her life. She was buried at Homer, LA. Their children were Lloyd Malcom and William

The ninth child of William Elias and Malinda Hatley McClung was born 5 May 1869. She died
7 Sept 1876.
Possibly the second son of Hiram and Margaret Jones McClung. He may be one of the two sons
listed in the 1830 census of Henry County as born 1825-30. All we know for sure is that
there was an Alphus McClung who married Nancy J. E. Little in Carroll County, GA.
We have a note that the first son of Hiram McClung was a Baptist minister and he lived in
Calhoun Co., Alabama. There were no McClungs in that county in 1880 so it must have been
subsequent to that. We will need to see if it was this Alphus.
The brother of William Elias McClung was born ca1828 (1860c) and is probably the son of
Hiram and his first wife. He married Lively Jane Hackeby (by tradition, Hatley) 17 Nov
1853 in Carroll Co., GA. She is found in the 1900
census of Claiborne, LA as Lively McClung, b. Apr 1829 in GA. Her mother b. in NC but her
father's birthplace was unknown to her. Samuel and Lively's first two children
were born in Georgia before they moved to Alabama about 1859. (Hannah VanHorn found them in
the 1860 census of Randolph Co., AL). Five children were born in Alabama before they moved
to Claiborne Co., LA. They were residing there in 1880 where they were enumerated close to
his brother, William E. McClung. Also listed as living in the family in that year was an
Amma J. McClung b. 1864 in LA, no relationship given. This would indicate that a third
member of the family had come to LA several years earlier than Wm. E. and Samuel.
Twenty years later, in the 1900 census, Lively was a widow living with a daughter and only
William E. is still in Claiborne, LA. Some of the daughters may be there listed under their
married names.
The first child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b. ca 1854 in GA. He was
age 25 and unmd when the 1880 census was taken in LA. In 1900 he had moved on.
The second child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b. ca 1856 (1860c) in GA.
He was only 4 years old when the family was living in Randolph Co., AL. He was
22 years old and living with his parents in 1880, Claiborne, LA.
The third child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b.1860 in Alabama, probably
in Jefferson County. He moved to Claiborne Parish, LA with his family about 1863. We pick
up a William E. in the 1900 census of Claiborne Co. (Ward 1, p.5A) as head of household,
born Nov 1863 in AL. His wife, Ludie P., was b. Mar 1872 in LA. They had been married
13 years and had no children with them.
The fourth child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b. 1864 in AL.
The fifth child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b. ca 1867 in AL. We have
an A(?) Gathright, wife of a Mr. Gathright (name could not be deciphered by transcriptionists)
who was born June 1866 in AL. She gives her father b. AL and mother in GA. They have in
their household in 1900 census Anna (dau) born Dec 1888 in LA; Lucy P. (dau) b. Nov. 1892
in LA; Robbert (son) b. May 1895 in LA; Rosy P. (dau) b. 1898 in LA; and their Mr. Gaithright's
mother-in-law, Lively McClung, living with them. We believe this record belongs to Mahala.
Can anyone confirm this?
The sixth child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b.1870 in AL.
The seventh child of Samuel H. and Lively Jane Hatley McClung was b. 1873 in AL.
There is this listing of a man, H. T. McClung who was born 1853 in AL, wife, C.T. born 1857 in
GA and with a son, J.E. b. 1879 in Claiborne Parish, LA. He is living next to or very near
Samuel H. McClung as they are enumerated on the same page. It is not likely that he is
a son as Samuel's family was still in Georgia when this man was born.
The fourth child of Hiram R. and his first wife was born 1825-30 in Henry County, GA.
Note: We do not have an enumeration for Hiram for 1840 or 1850 so we are probably missing
some children.
The child of Hiram McClung was born ca 1836 in GA. She was the oldest child listed in
the 1860 census of this family in Randolph Co. When we know Hiram's marriage to Alcey, we
could determine if she was a daughter to Alcey.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was born ca 1843 in GA.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was born ca 1835 or 45 in Georgia. He moved with the
family to Randolph Co., AL ca 1853. He married Margaret Moore probably in AL. She was born
in GA in 1840. Both her parents were born in South Carolina; See Moore. Hiram and his family were
residing at Fox Creek, Randolph County, Alabama in 1880.
The first child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1865 in Randolph Co., AL.
She died in 1938 in AL and was buried at Morton's Chapel, Altoona, AL. She was married to
Robert K. Kimbrall.
The second child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1867 in Randolph Co., AL.
See: Hiram Thomas.
The third child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1870 in Randolph Co., AL.
The fourth child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1873 in Randolph Co., AL.
The fifth child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1875 in Randolph Co., AL
The sixth child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born ca 1877 in Randolph Co., AL.
The seventh child of Hiram Jerry and Margaret Moore McClung was born in 1880 in Randolph Co., AL.
Note: there is a big gap in ages between Hiram and Jeremiah so the older children probably
left the area before 1880.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was born ca 1856 in Alabama, probably Randolph
County. At age 24, he had not yet married when he was enumerated with the family for the
1880 census.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was born ca 1857 in Randolph Co., AL.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was born ca 1860 in Randolph Co., AL.
The child of Hiram and Alcey McClung was a daughter born ca 1864 in Randolph Co., AL.
