{These are the only known children of William. No one knows the children of Marmaduke or
anything about him. Just betting that there was also a Reuben in this family.
That would have been the generation to be the father of our Elizabeth who married
John McClung Sr.}
2. Elizabeth b. 1774 Rowan md Thomas Phillips in 1800 (He was born in Oglethorpe
Co., GA ca 1770
Elizabeth that married John McClung was born ca 1765 in (probably SC) although they
seemed to have met in Rowan County NC. It appears that John McClung (b. 1762 PA) was
sent to the Linn family to be apprenticed when his parents died in GA about 1772.
That took him to Rowan County. We know that a William McClung was married to a Linn
and think that John McClung's mother was a Linn.
John and Elizabeth McClung named their first son, Reuben. This is definitely NOT a
McClung name. We puzzled about this until seeing this Deed in Greene Co., GA:
This Indenture made the fourteenth day of July and year of our Lord one thousand seven
hundred and ninety-six between John McLung of the County of Greene and State of Georgia
of one part and Reuben McLung of the County and state aforesaid of the other part.
Witnesseth that this said John McLung in consequence of a deed of Gifts made unto
said Reuben McLung by Robert Linn of North Carolina Roan County of a certain black
Mare described in said Deed of Gift bearing date the seventeenth day of April one
thousand seven hundred and ninety-five and delivered to said John McClung to be held
in trust by same for said Reuben until he arrives at the age of twenty-one years with
power to exchange said Mare for the other property to be held in like manner in
consequence of which Deed of Gift and as an equivalent for the above said mare the
said John McLung hath bargained, sell, release and confirm and by these presents doth
the said Reuben McLung his heirs and assigns forever all that tract of land lying and
being in the County and State aforesaid on the waters of Sandy Creek on the north line
of the tract and wherein Thos. Phillips now lives . . . (description in metes and
bounds) . . . 250 acres granted to Ethelred Thomas and conveyed to John McLung by
Thomas Phillips. Together with all the rights members and appurtenances thereof
whatsoever and this said tract of land belonging and anywise appurtaining unto the
above said Reuben McLung, his heirs and assigns to his and their own proper use and
behalf. And the said John McLung for himself and his heirs to the true intent and
meanings of these presents. In writing whereof the said John McLung hath hereunto set
his hand and seal the year and day first above written.
Reuben McClung who was born in 1785 was only five years old when all these folks were
arranging his inheritance.
The above Moses was not the Moses Sr. born 1732 because he had died ca 1783. This
Moses must have had a brother named Reuben to be old enough to be Reuben McClung's
grandpa.
From a family group sheet submitted to Ancestral File, I can see that Moses Sr. had a
son, Moses b. 1758 and a Samuel b. 1752 who could have been the signatories on this
document. But who is the Reuben?
It is doubtful that Elizabeth named her first son for a nephew who was only nine years
old when her son was born. We are looking for an older Reuben Bellah.
Notice that on some of the charts for Reuben Bellah born 1776 that they have him
married secondly to a Barbara Whatley. That is also interesting since John McClung's
contemporary in Greene County was George McClung who married Myrada Whately. We do not
know her parents. We think that George was the son of the Robert McClung of
Wrightsboro, GA in colonial times. This Robert was probably an uncle to our John,
the Revolutionary Soldier as they all seemed to have moved to GA about the same time.
John McClung had about 18 children all together. Not all of them Elizabeth's. But
they comprise the Georgia McClungs as listed in the McClung Family Association website.
Apparently most of them are Bellah descendants.
*****************************************
Also noted that the land given to John McClung had been previously owned by Thomas
Phillips. Was this the same Thomas Phillips who married Elizabeth Bellah in 1800 ?
-- she was the daughter of Samuel Bellah b. 1752 in Rowan Co., NC.
