A child of Henry and Rachel McMullen Ballengee was born 8 March 1811 in Monroe Co., WV,
When she was sixteen, she married Amiger Lilly. He and Sarah's uncle Isaac posted bond 17 Oct
1827. Her father, Henry, gave consent and her step-brother, Samuel Farley was a testator.
William Lilly, father, gave consent for Amager and Elizabeth Lilly was a testator.
Amager Lilly was born 18 June 1807. His ancestry was from Rumigny, France, settling in
Fluvanna County, Virginia.
Amager and Sarah moved out of Monroe County, WV. They have not been located in the
surrounding area in censuses. William Lilly, however, appears in Nicholas County in 1830
with his wife both listed in their 7Os. They are living alone. Sarah's brother, Edward,
married Jane Lilly who may be Amager's sister. In 1830 Edward and Jane were living in Wayne
Co., Ind. Another couple was living with them both born 1810-15. This could be the two
couples of brothers and sisters. Amager Lilly died or was killed between 1830 and 1839. His
place of death is unknown at present.
Sarah moved to Miller Co., MO and was there by about 1840. She and Amager had two
daughters, Mary Jane born 2 Sept 1828 and Henrietta b. 15 Apr 1830. (Dates provided by
Ethel Hartman from a family Bible). When Henry Ballengee wrote his will in 1837, he provides
for his widowed daughter and the two granddaughters. He left the land that his wife would
inherit. Upon her death, it would pass to the Lilly women. This would indicate that they
were living then with Henry and Rachel.
It wasn't long until Sarah found a husband. 2 Feb 1841 she married Oliver Crawford.
This is found in Cole Co., MO Mg records. The wedding was performed by Wm. Burk, J.P.
Oliver was born 1792 in VA. They made their home in Miller Co. in the same neighborhood as
the Evi Ballengee family, Martin Farley family, the Evi Ballengee Farleys, Packs, and others
from Virginia.
The first child from this union was born 6 Dec 1841 and was named Samuel Farley
Crawford after Sarah's brother, Samuel Farley. Samuel and his wife, Permelia, were living
in another section of Miller County. They were loved and respected by relatives and the
community.
Oliver Crawford, Jr. was born 3 Feb 1843 in Miller Co., MO. A daughter, Julia was born
10 July 1846 (Miller Co. 1850 census, age 4) About this time the two oldest daughters,
Mary Jane Lilly and Henrietta Lilly were married.
Mary Jane was married in Miller Co. to James Wimmer or Wiseman 23 April 1846. Miller
Co. Mg. records the name as Wiseman while Judge Jenkins' history of Miller Co. records it
as Wimmer. There were families of both names in the county at the time. However, we could
not locate Mary Jane and James in the 1850 or 60 censuses of Miller Co. A Jane Wirnmer b.
1795 in VA is listed with a family in the 1850 census.
Henrietta Lilly was married 16 March 1847 in Miller Co., MO to Levi Wood Albertson
(or Albison), probably the son of Early and Elizabeth Alberson from N.C. and KY, as listed
in the 1850 census of Miller Co. The Albersons did not choose to remain in Miller County
either but did return by 1860. By then they are listed with children: Lucy A. b. ca 1845;
John 0., b. 1848; Sarah J., b. 1849; Susan M. b. 1852; Jim or James b. 1858.
It was around 1850 that many in this community got the gold fever. Perhaps that accounts
for the fact they cannot be located in the 1850 census.
Tragedy again struck Sarah's family. Oliver Crawford died between 1853-4. Then after
losing her husband, she lost her 13 year old son, Oliver, Jr. He died 25 Oct 1856.
16 Sept 1855 Sarah Crawford married Thomas F. Scott in Miller Co. His family had lived
a number of years in Indiana before coming to Missouri. In 1850 he was 33 years old and
living with his parents, Thomas and Hannah. Sarah and Thomas Scott did not remain in Miller
County as they do not appear in the 1860 census. Perhaps they removed to Cole County or
Dallas County. Sarah's brother, James resided in Cole Co. and some of his children were
married in Dallas Co., MO. There were Scott families in Dallas Co., Jasper Twp, 1860 census,
who had been in Indiana.
The family Bible record gives the marriage of Sarah and Oliver Crawford's son, Samuel
Farley Crawford to first, Cornelia L. Belden 1 Jan 1865 and second to Rachel Jane Creason
Crane in 1866. Perhaps the first wife died in childbirth.
Sarah did not live to see either of these marriages. She had died 28 Feb 1863. Her son,
Samuel Farley Crawford succeeded her in death 21 Dec 1868. It is not known where they are
buried.
The fourth child of Henry and Rachel McMullen Ballengee was born in Monroe County,
Virginia about 1812. She is mentioned in Henry's will. She married John Rollyson 23 March
1832 in Fayette County, Virginia. We would like to hear from anyone who could locate John
Rollyson's family. The 1850 census of Fayette Co. should be checked. Several by the name of
Rollyson are listed among the soldiers serving in Company F, 10th Regiment (Federal) from
Braxton Co., WV. A John Rollyson was wounded at Droop Mountain 6 Nov 1863. A John H Rollyson
died of scrofula in a hospital at Winchester 19 Feb 1863. One of these may have been Jane's
husband or a son. Others by the name of Rollyson in this outfit were Samuel A., Charles M.,
James, and Milton. It should be noted that Jane had some cousins in Braxton County, children
of David and Mary Ballengee Fox. Mary Fox was a daughter of George Ballengee (Jane's uncle).
Jane's brother, Evi Ballengee, married Elizabeth Rollyson, the daughter of John H.
Rollyson. It is likely that Elizabeth and John Rollyson were both children of John H.
Rollyson.
