In 1965 several researchers with McClung lines
pooled their resources and sought help from the Ulster-Scot Historical
Society in Belfast, North Ireland, Below are exerts from the letter returned
along with the report.
"Material relating to the 17th and 18th centuries in Ulster is extremely scanty, due in part to the fact that a great many old documents such as Wills, Census Returns and Irish Registers were destroyed in Dublin in 1922, during the Civil War. As well as this, very few Presbyterian Churches have registers which began prior to 1825.
We have extracted any reference we could find relating to the McClungs and you will observe that the only record of the name in Ulster in the Hearth Money Rolls of 1669 was that of Peter McClung in Portglenone which lies in the midwest of Co. Antrim,
Co. Antrim Parishes are in Connor Diocese and the indexes to the Connor Wills and Testamentary Grants show McClungs in Templepatrick 1742, and in Antrim 1753, in Templecorran - which is not far from Larne - in 1775 and in Larne in 1812."
"We examined the Co. Antrim Voter's List for
1776 but found no trace of McClung."
"A Rent Roll for the Templeton Estate, Co.
Antrim C. 1851 showed that a McClung family was then living in Straidballymorris,
in Templepatrick Parish."
