This feudal lord, b. 1267, having distinguished himself in the wars of Gascony and Scotland, temp. Edward I, was summoned to parliament by that monarch as a Baron, 26 January, 1297, and he had regular summonses from that period until 7th Edward II, 26 November 1313. In the 5th Edward II [1312], his lordship was constituted governor of Buckingham Castle, in Northamptonshire, and steward of Rockingham Forest. He d. in 1314, leaving by Eleanor, his wife, dau. of Nicholas de Segrave, three daus., his co-heirs, viz., I. Ellen, m. 1st Nicholas St. Maur, and 2ndly, Alan de Charlton; Maud Zouche, m. Robert, Lord Holland; Elizabeth, a nun at Brewood, co. Stafford. Amongst these three daus. and co-heirs of Alan le Zouche, a partition was made in the 8th Edward II [1315] of their father's lands, excepting the manor of Ashby-de-la-Zouche which the deceased lord gave to his kinsman, William de Mortimer, who thereupon assumed the surname Zouche. At the decease of Lord Zouche, the Barony of Zouche of Ashby fell into abeyance between his daus., as it still continues with their representatives. John le Strange, who was a person of great note in his time. In 16th of King John, his father being then living, he was in the Wars of Poitou in France. In 15th of Henry III, 1231, he obtained a grant of the inheritance of Wockwardine for the yearly rent of œ8, to be paid to the King and his heirs and successors. In 21st of Henry III, 1237, he was appointed Sheriff of Salop and Stafford and constituted Governor of the Castles of Salop and Brugges. He was afterwards one of the Baron's Marchers and had command to reside in the Marshes in order to resist incursions by the Welsh. In the contest between Henry III and the Barons he adhered with great fidelity to the King and obtained for his loyalty a grant of the lands of Walter de Muscegros, which had been forfeited in that rebellion.
