Susan Johanson, World Connect db=johanson, originally had an ancestry for Alice de Greinville, wife of Humphrey de Stafford, which started with William de Greinville by Lucy, son of William de Greinville, son of Adam de Greinville, etc. Susan indicates her sources for this pedigree in her reply to my e-mail. I had pointed out to her that the line did not agree with two posting by Doug Gentile & Douglas Richardson on SGM, who said that Alice's father was John de Grenville/Greville. Anyway, as indicated in my e-mail to Susan, a copy of which is below, I have found a possible link, which I am now incorporating in my line (but far from proven), between the John de Greville/Grenville/Greinville indicated in the two postings to SGM and the original ancestry which Susan had for Alice:
Susan,
I got back from two weeks away from home (& the internet), taking my daughter off to college; and have been working this problem for awhile.
I have worn my fingers raw trying to find an ancestry for John de Grenville, of Southwick, Somerset (Douglas Richardson) or John Greville, of Southwick, Wilts (Doug Gentile), father of Alice who m. Humphrey de Stafford. I believe that Southwick is in Wiltshire, but it is somewhat close to Frome, Somerset, so maybe they were across the border.
The above two references are about all that I can find in GEN-MEDIEVAL (soc.genealogy.medieval), and they don't take the ancestry past John.
In the LDS Ancestral Files, I did find a John de Greinville, b. 1322, Burmington, Warwickshire, who was son of William de Greinville by Lucy, who was son of William de Greinville, son of Adam de Greinville by Isabel, etc. This seemed to follow the original line that you had for Alice de Greinville. I seem to recall that your original source for that line was Burke's Dormant & Extinct Peerages. Is that right?
Anyway, the LDS files are pretty unreliable, but, if true, then maybe the John Greinville, b. 1322, was connected with Southwick, and, being father of Alice, connects to the original line of Greinville which you had. The birth date of 1322 coincidentally corresponds to the birth date that I had estimated for John Greville/Grenville of Southwick, father of Alice.
Pretty slim, but it is the only lead that I have come up with so far.

The was Susan Johanson's reply to the above:
Jim,
My original source was the Penrose gedcom which is not online anymore. The sources for parts of that gedcom was Louis Sorley, "The Sorley Pedigrees", but I don't know if the Greville line was from Sorley. I tried looking the site up on the web archives. I was able to get to it but some of the individual pages are blocked and are not coming up. If you find anything else about this line let me know.We also did the college trips a couple of weeks ago. My younger son is a sophomore at JMU here in VA and my older son is in graduate school at Columbia in NYC.
Keep in touch,
Susan

"Immediately after the Norman conquest," says Collins, "arose into power and importance, more especially in the midland counties, the great baronial family of Basset" (descended from Thurston the Norman), which gave a chief justice to England in the reign of Henry I, in the person of Ralph Basset, from whom sprang the Lords Basset of Drayton, the Lords Basset of Heddington, &c. About the middle of the 12th century, the Bassets of Cornwall obtained the estates of Tehidy by marriage with the heiress of the great house of de Dunstanville. In the 42nd year of King Henry III (1257-8), Ralph Basset, Lord of Drayton, co. Stafford, [great-]great-grandson of Richard Basset, justice of England, and his wife, Maud Ridel, had summons (amongst other great men) to attend the king at Chester, well furnished with horse and arms, to oppose the incursions of the Welsh. But in the 48th of the same monarch, having joined Simon Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and the other rebellious barons, he was appointed the next year, after the defeat of the king's arms at Lewes, and capture of the king, governor for those lords of the castles of Salop and Bruges. He fell, however, before the close of the same year at the battle of Evesham. It is said that when the Earl of Leicester perceived the great force and order of the royal army, calculating upon defeat, he conjured Ralph Basset and Hugh Dispenser to retire and reserve themselves for better times but they bravely answers, "that if he perished, they would not desire to live." Lord Basset m. Margaret, dau. of Roger de Someri, Baron of Dudley, and widow of Uriah St. Pierre, and had issue, Ralph, and Maud. Notwithstanding the death of Lord Basset, thus in arms against the king, his widow was so favoured by the monarch as to have the chief of his estates settled upon her for life, but soon afterwards, taking the veil, she passed her title in those lands to her son, Ralph Basset.
