They headquartered in Ireland and raided York on All Saints Day, 1 Nov 866.

Royal Families of Medieval Scandinavia places Ivar the Boneless, "participated in the martyrdom of St. Edmund in 869 in England . . . also took part in the siege of Dumbarton (in Scotland) in 870 . . . king of the Norsemen of all Ireland and Britain", as son of Ragnar.  Rudolph Krutar, following a "classic" ancestry of Somerled, by the Clan MacDonald, has obviously the same Ivar/Ivarr as father of Guthorm probably King of Dublin, but with the following ancestry:

1. Ivarr, King of Dublin; sacked Dunbarton in 870.
2. King Godfrey; raided Ireland in 854, d. 873.
4. King Ranald "Higher than the Hills"; expelled to Orkney.
8. Olaf "Geirstada-Alf", King in Vestfold, 810-840 (in my files as Olaf Gudrodson, b. c790, d. 840)

Note: I am following Royal Families of Medieval Scandinavia, not the above ancestry.

Poppa means puppet or little doll [Ref: McBride2]
The name Poppa comes from Dudo, who calls her daughter of Count Berenger. [Ref: TAF 24 Dec 1999]

What I have in mind is her (Katherine Keats-Rohan) article on Poppa, mother of William Longsword of Normandy, which appeared in The American Genealogist a few years back.  Basically, she suggested that Juhel/Judicael Berenger was son of a Count Berenger, named by Dudo and William of Juminges, and that both this Count Berenger and William Longsword were maternal grandchildren of an Earlier Frankish Count Berenger.  I have seen it speculated (i.e. by Guillotel) that Judicael Berenger's paternal grandfather might have been a son or grandson of King Erispoe, but there was little evidence with which to place him. 469893508. Gorm "The Old" Haraldsson King Of DENMARK was born about 880 in Sjaelland Island, Denmark. He died 936 in Jellinge, Vejle, Denmark. Gorm married Thyra "Ornament Of Denmark" DANEBOD [Queen] about 897 in Denmark.

Gorm 899-936. [Parents]

Gorm the Old (Knut I) - unified Denmark; died about 940.  (Ancestral Roots & Complete Peerage say 936).

A man whose soul was ever hostile to religion.  Thus did the Danish Historian Saxo sum up the life of Gorm the old.

Gorm the old or Gorm den Gamle, appeared on the scene in the late ninth century and began unifying the country of Denmark.

Gorm's parentage is somewhat obscure, although we know that his father was Hardknut.  As we have seen, Snorri tells us that this Hardeknut was the son of Sigurd Orm-i-Oga, who in turn was the youngest son of the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok.  [Note: I have Gorm as great-grandson of Hardecanute, as I believe there were many generations between Ragnar Lodbrook and Gorm.  I believe that "British Kings & Queens", "Royalty for Commoners" and several other books support my ancestry.  Complete Peerage states that Gorm assumed the throne in 899, which implies his father's death date.]

According to other sources, Gorm's father Hardeknut came from Norway. While many Norwegian Vikings were seeking their fortune in the west, Hardeknut (according to this version) turned east and conquered the Danish island of Sjaelland.  With little difficulty, he ousted the rightful heir to the throne, a young man named Siegric, and assumed the rule of the island.

When Hardeknut died, his son Gorm was accepted as king by the local inhabitants.  Gorm is sometimes given the double name Hardknut Gorm, and because of the Knut in his name, he may be listed as Knut I in the lists of Danish kings.  The root orm seen in the name Gorm (and in our English word "worm") means serpent, and it is found in Orm-i-Oga ("Snake Eyes") and other royal names of the day.

Gorm was not content to rule only one small island, but began to extend his kingdom by conquest and barter.  By the end of his reign he had unified Jutland, Schleswig, many islands, part of Holstein, and some provinces of Norway and Sweden under his rule.  Thus Denmark under Gorm was larger than the Denmark we know today.

Gorm was every inch a Viking, and his subjects were given to the worst king of piracy.  The Danes plundered in Smolensk and Kiev in Russia.  In 882 they journeyed to Aix-la-Chapelle where Karl the Great (Charlemagne) was buried, and stole the gold and silver decorations from his tomb. Over and over again, they harried France, and each time the ineffectual Carolingian king Charles the Fat was forced to pay them great quantities of silver in return for their agreeing to leave. . . .

After Gorm and Tyra died, their son Harald Bluetooth erected at Jelling the largest Viking monument known.  It includes two rune stones, two huge mounds, the royal grave, and a church.  The inscription on the larger rune stone was intended not only to honor Harald's parents, but also to make sure his own fame endured.  It reads:

"King Harald commanded this monument to be made in memory of Gorm, his father, and in memory of Thorvi (Thyra) his mother - that Harald who won the whole of Denmark for himself, and Norway, and made the Danes Christian."

Note:  I have quite a different ancestry for Gorm from the above, which they admit is obscure.  The only thing in common with the ancestry given above is that Gorm came from the island of Sjaelland, which his father was King of.

469893509. Thyra "Ornament Of Denmark" DANEBOD [Queen] was born about 896 in Wessex, England. She died 935 in Jellinge, Vejle, Denmark. [Parents]

Gorm's wife was Tyra - of that there is no doubt.  But her parentage is even more mysterious that Gorm's.  According to an ancient tradition, she was the daughter of an Anglo-Saxon monarch, perhaps King Edward the Elder, who ruled Wessex from 904 to 924.

Snorri, on the other hand, informs us that Tyra was a sister of King Klakk-Harald of Jutland.  (This Danish King is certainly not to be confused with the Harald Klak [d. 845], who was befriended by Louis the Pious a whole century before Gorm's time.)

There seems to be more evidence to support the tradition that Gorm's wife was English.

In the first place, Tyra was a Christian.  It is far more likely that a Christian princess would have come from England, where the royal family were Christians, than from Jutland, which was still thoroughly pagan despite the early missionary efforts of Ansgar.

In the second place, several of Edward the Elder's daughters were married to royalty from the Continent.  One daughter was married to Otto I of Germany, and another to Charles the Simple, the great-great-grandson of Karl the Great, so it certainly is plausible that Edward may have given a daughter named Tyra to Gorm, in an effort to secure peace between England and Denmark.  The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions that the Danes in England submitted to Edward, and it is possible that there may have been a marriage alliance between Gorm and the English royal family.

In the third place, the late twelth-century historian - Saxo - tells us that Tyra was the daughter of an English king.  (He calls her "the daughter of 'Ethelred'," but then one is tempted to wonder whether Saxo used 'Ethelred' as a title or generic term of all Enlish kings.  Ethelred I lived too early to have been the father of Tyra, and Ethelred II came much too late.)

We feel that Saxo, a Dane, was more likely to have his Danish history straight than was Snorri, and Icelandic Norwegian.  Saxo states that Tyra "surpassed other women in seriousness and shrewdness, and laid the condition on her suitor (Gorm) that she would not marry him till she had received Denmark as a dowry.  The compact was made between them, and she was betrothed to Gorm."

Whatever her ancestry, Gorm's Christian wife seems to have been a kindly woman, and very popular with her subjects.  But she was unable to convert her husband to Christianity, and he remained a staunch pagan until his dying day.

Adelaide about 914. [Parents]

This Adelaide is the focal point of one of the most debated controversiesin medieval genealogy. Although I show her as marrying 3 times, aftermuch study of numerous postings on GEN-MEDIEVAL, I have beenpersuaded that two individuals have probably been combined into one. Forconvenience sake, I leave her in my database as one person. An excerpt
from one of the postings sums it up best:
Matman posted tosoc.genealogy.medieval on 21 May 1997 (in part):Subject: Re: Burgundy - One more try to sum up *"Adelaide dau of DUKE GISELBERT appears with her husband ROBERTOF TROYES and son Heribert in a charter of 949. There is no problem withthis. The difference of opinion is whether this Adelaide is the same asthe wife of LAMBERT who later married GEOFFREY. Most historians haveshied away from making this assumption, eg Maurice Chaume (who wasotherwise much given to speculation) in his 'The Origins of Burgundy'1925, Werner in an article in Die Welt als Geschicht, 1960, p107-13(especially p111), and more recently Constance Bouchard, 'Sword andMitre'.To make them one person does create problems, not least with thechronology. Adelaide was old enough to have children by about 950 (forshe had a grandson FULK THE BLACK by c.970), yet she was still youngenough to have children (eg Maurice) c.980 or later. Its possible, but onlyjust. I don't know how common it was for noblewomen to give birth after40.Secondly if she only married LAMBERT after 967, then any childrenfrom that marriage could not have been born before that. But ADALBERTOF ITALY first husband of GERBERGA had died by 975 at the latest, andOTTO-WILLIAM was their son. So clearly if one accepts that Adelaidewas one person, one has to find different parents for GERBERGA. Somehave got round this by making GERBERGA a daughter of LAMBERT by anearlier wife. As LAMBERT first appears in 944, and is called count in959, this may not be impossible.Lastly, I may be naive about this, but even in the tenth century, acase of a mother marrying her son-in-law would be exceptional (no?) andarouse comment, yet no source mentions such a thing."Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (118:19-21), identifies Adelaide as the dau.of ROBERT, COUNT OF TROYES (RIN 1230), and also identifies GEOFFREY asher 2nd husband, and FULK III as their son.ES iii, 49; ii, 189 [rev. in iii(1)]; and iii, 116 and 433. ES III, 49 hasAdelaide as the daughter of GISELBERT OF CHALONS etc, marrying firstROBERT, then LAMBERT (d.979), then GEOFFREY; and Adela marryingLAMBERT (d.978) then GEOFFREY, which would mean Adela married bothher stepfathers. [There is evidently some confusion between Adelaide &Adela.]The above note leads to the opinion , held by some, that this Adelaidemarried ROBERT, then LAMBERT, then her son-in-law GEOFFREY. Thesequence of events for this most unusual web of intermarriages wouldbe as follows:950 ROBERT C OF TROYES m. Adelaide of Burgundy & dau. ADELE born.
965 GEOFFREY GREYMANTLE (age 28) m. ADELE OFVERMANDOIS/TROYES (age 15).967 ROBERT died and his widow almost immediately m. LAMBERT.975/8 ADELE died and her widower, GEOFFREY, m. after a wait of 1 to5 years, his deceased wife's newly widowed mother,Adelaide of Burgundy.979 LAMBERT died. His widow, Adelaide, as stated above, then m. ,
almost immediately, her son-in-law, GEOFFREY.

As a dissenting opinion re. her parentage:
Richard Borthwick posted tosoc.genealogy.medieval on 1 Dec 1996:Subject: Re: Gerberga, wife of Adalbert (was re. Welfs)"In her discussion of the counts of Chalons CBB [Constance BrittainBouchard *Sword, Mitre and Cloister: Nobility and the Church inBurgundy, 980-1198* (Ithica NY & London, Cornell University Press,1987)] says:"LAMBERT married a woman named Adelaide (*). While there is noevidence of her origins in the sources, scholars have repeatedly tried totie her to the family of GISELBERT, COUNT OF BURGUNDY [RIN 1232], bothbecause GISELBERT did have a daughter named Adelaide and the mother,as I have it, of the Adelaide mentioned in the following note - i.e. thewife of ROBERT, COUNT OF TROYES (RIN 1230)] and because they feel aneed to explain how LAMBERT could have LEGITIMATELY** succeeded toChalon#. I prefer to leave Adelaide's origins unknown; since LAMBERT'ssuccession to Chalon was recognised by the king, he did not need ahereditary claim by his wife to legitimize his rule(##).LAMBERT died in 978, and his wife Adelaide quickly married GEOFFREYGREYMANTLE, count of Anjou. GEOFFREY acted as count of Chalon from979 until his own death in 989 (*). ..." p.307f.* Source regerences./ ** She uses italics to make the emphasis# A long footnoted discussion of who has said what on the subject.
