Notes for JOHN MCELHONE:

This is the suspected immigrant to the United States for this line of the family. His name was found in April 1998 in the cited source book. All that is left now is to find him in Ireland and to link him to his children and grand children. After 5 years of looking, it is a wonderful feeling just to know his name.

No other names mentioned except the Surrogate, James Everett.

The first deed is an indenture made 28 Jan 1829 between John Muckelhone and Jane his wife of Shawangunk and Jacob Muckelhone of the same palce. For $400 lawful money, land in Shawangunk being part of a certain tract of land granted by letters patent to Peter Deyo and son being a part of lot No 7 so distinguished in a ? filed in the Clerks office of a partition of the same by Johannis Bruyn, Abraham Schoonmaker, and ? Tuthill commissioners appointed to make partition conveyed is the same as Frederick Smith and Hannah his wife conveyed to the said John McElhone by deed dated march 23 in 1826 and is butted and bounded as follows beginning at a stake and stones in the south westerly bounds of said lot being the most southerly corner of a lot of fifty acres conveyed to the said Jacob Muckelhone by Mary McClaughey and runs from there along the bounds thereof north fifty eight degrees east twenty eight chains and twenty links to a ? saplink marked standing in the easterly bounds of said tract thence along the ? four degrees west ten chains and twenty links to a stake and stones the northerly corner of a lot conveyed to William Fulton thence south sixty five degrees west twenty chains and twenty links to a stake and stone about six links northwest from a ? wook tree marked thence north fifty four degrees west seven chains to the place of beginning 18 acres Together with all and singular stuff on lot. Signed by John Mcelhone & Jane McElhone in presence of John L. Lyon.

The second deed book 38 page 308, John buys from Jacob and Mary 2 lots for $400. One of 25 acres in lot one and one of 127 9/10 acres from lot five.

On page 309 of same book, John buys from Cornelia Schoomaker of Kingston for $227.75 67 acres from the second expense lot released to Cornelius Lowe.

In book 40 page 3 and 4 copy on file:
John McElhone and Jane hes wife of Shawangunk and Abnal H. Wade of Shawangunk for $400 land on easerly side of the Shawangunk Mountain in a tract of land granted y patent to the trustees of Rochester being parts of lots one and five so destinguished in the subdivision of 570 acres made between Cornelius Bruyn, David Mulford and Cornelius Low containing 127 8/10 acres.

In book 40 page 5 Abnal and his wife Rebecca return this land to John on 14 Dec 1832.

In book 41 page 359 John sells 25 acres to Simon Terwilliger part of the second expense lot.

On page 361 James MeElhone releases bond he is holding on the land above.

In book 43 page 275 1 April 1834 sells 127 8/10 acres of lots 1 & 5 for $450.

Book 44 page 580 2 Jan 1835 buys 9 6/10 acres from Abraham J. Terwilliger and Sarah his wife and Cornelia Terwilliger for $96. Part of the farm of Abraham P. Terwilliger deceased adjoining the land of Daniel Taylor and Ephraim Rinehart.

page 582 Gavin Mackinson sells to John Mackelhone for $105 land in Rochester patent, now Warwarsing part of second expense lot, 25 acres.

book 47 page 679 Dec 29 1836 From Abraham and Mary Scott to John for $400 25 acres they got from Samuel and Mary Terwilliger in 1836.

Jane 65 born in Scotland, lived 43 years in Shawangunk. In her household, William Jr. 25 and Catherine Scott 15 (her grandchild) 30 acres of improved land and 30 acres unimproved. Land valued $1500, stock $500, tools $150. Plowed 5 acres in prior year, 10 in pasture. Yeild 18 tons of hay from 6 acres, 35 bushels of corn 1 acre, 8 bushels of buckwheat 2 acres, 15 bushels of corn 1/2 acre, 15 pounds of potatoes. 5 cows, 2 oxen, 5 others. 200 pounds of butter, 1 horse, 8 pigs (7 under 6 months) sold $10 of eggs in year.

Grandson Brodhead McElhone and his daughter Malinda to get $50 paid by daughter Malinda. Children James, Moberry, Julia and Eleanor share any leftovers. Will dated 14 Oct 1873 and proven 29 Jan 1874.
