And related links
Last revised on May 11, 2004 Page maintained and updated by Roger Thorogood email at roggenguy@aol.com
A mere 3 and a half years after first building this page, I am now going to change it quite a bit. But do not hold your breath. This will be a work in progress in my free time for the next several months. Bear with me. Perhaps the first link to give is one which was requested to be added just recently and the reason I came here to try to remember how to do this.
If you are interested in things to do with County Tyrone, please try this site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cotyroneireland/
I have checked it out and encourage you all to take a peek and maybe donate some of the things you know to increase their "library" of information. Thank you Teena for offering the URL to the McElhone searchers.
There is a mailing "list" which you may join by sending e-mail to McElhone-L@rootsweb.com with only the word "subscribe" in the body. You do not need a subject. You can join in digest form by sending mail to McElhone-D@rootsweb.com Messages posted to McElhone-L will be send to all subscribers for both digest and mail mode.
All the following links are under review as of May 11, 2004
The first person who contacted me on AOL about McElhone interests:
Ladyphil@aol.com - Kathleen McGarvey Philippi
Kathy, with the help of her mother, has worked a great deal on gathering information on the family as it developed in Magherafelt, Derry, Ireland. Most new contacts seem to link in to Kathy's family somewhere.
We were quickly joined in our little group by Tracy Lynn McElhone. Tracy would like to find out more about Francis McElhone who came to Colorado in the mid 1800's and was born in Ireland. She can be reached at TLEM@aol.com
As the three of us were just getting started in our combining of McElhone information, we were joined by Val (McElhone) Gray from Australia. Val's family came to Australia in the 1950s. Her grandfather may have worked on the docks in Brooklyn in the U.S. for a time before returning to Britain. Val is looking for information on James McElhone of the Glasgow region and his father, John McElhone from Cookstown, Tyrone, Ireland. In addition to her family, Val provided information she had received on some early important McElhone's in Australia. Val can be reached at ttgray@netspace.net.au Val's sister Jan lives in Wisconsin now and is interested in how we will all fit together. schaap@execpc.com
D H McElhone of Patterson NJ. is also searching on our name. He is descended from a Patrick who came from Londonderry. - Mcelhone@erols.com
Speaking of Patrick McElhone's, I have the address of Patrick but can not find the mail where he contacted me so I do not recall where he fits in the picture. Got mail on June 24 from Kathy and it seems Patrick is related to Patty, Dennis and Amy listed here elswhere. More to come as available. PJM4149@aol.com
Later we contacted the person who had provided the other files to Val. Briare McElhone also lives in Australia and can be reached at BMcElhone@colonial.com.au
About this time, we heard from Rib Smith. He was looking for some cousins and contacted us to see if we knew where they were. It turned out that Rib is in fact from the same line as Lorna so we had a lot of excitement there. Rib is at RIBJ@aol.com Just recently his brother Roger has joined the on line crowd. He is at rsmit@suffolk.lib.ny.us
Ribs Cousins are Fredrick and Alice McElhone. They run Benchmark Publications which has a home page at www.benchpress.com or members.aol.com/BenchmkPub The e-mail address is BenchmkPub@aol.com Fredrick wrote a fabulous book on the McElhone House in Hinsdale, Illinois which contained a great deal of information about his family.
Once this small group was in place, we all started leaving our names all over the net and have generated many new contacts. It is hard to keep straight which sequence these things occured. Patty Tchorek from Ontario Canada was early in the efforts and contributed a wonderful file of descendants of Arthur McElhone who came to Ontario in the mid 1800's. We would all like to know where Arthur came from in Ireland. tchorek@kwic.com
A releative of the branch who moved from Canada to Michigan is Amy Neville who lives in Michigan. Her address is amnevill@consumersenergy.com
Another in this group is - Dennis McElhone who lives in Michigan. dmcelhon@htonline.com
In January we linked up with Tanya Sutton in Perth, Australia. She is of course related to Kathy. Her e-mail address is sutton@starwon.com.au (This is a new address) I have not contacted her aunt Rosmarie, but Kathy recommended I add her address so here it is: tulsa@starwon.com.au
Also in January, we heard from Joe (Joseph) McElhone. He lives in Atlanta and is from Philadelphia. He is a musician who blends folk, classical and blues music. He has his own home page with a schedule of upcoming gigs and sound bites from various recordings. His home page is www.joemack.com and his e-mail address is joemack@voicenet.com
Another Joseph McElhone, who lives in Louisa, Virginia has also joined the hunt. His address is jmcelhone@ns.gemlink.com and he has had some impressive work done by the Heritage center in Dungannon. He also has some records from the Armagh Cathedral.
Jack Sheedy is a writer. He is the son of McElhone and contributes a fascinating first hand history from his great uncle. This history can be found on Jack's home page http://www.angelfire.com/ct/jacksheedy/ His email address is jacks@esslink.com
Michael Tessmer, Ph. D. contributed the information on the Dungannon branch of the family. Much of the work was done by his cousin who still lives in that area. Michael now lives in Kansas where he is a professor of Chemistry in a small college. He can be reached at mtessmer@sckans.edu. He has his homepage at www.sckans.edu/~mtessmer/
