Four Generations of Mozleys from Richard Mozley of Sutton on Trent, England

to Harriet Mozley Scholes (1855-1950)

Generation 1

Richard Mozley, a carpenter and wheeler, and his wife Mary lived in Sutton on Trent, a small village in Nottinghamshire on the Trent River. Mary may have been Mary Marshall, but I was not able to find the marriage of Richard and Mary in the Bishop's transcripts from Sutton on Trent (1). On March 28, 1778, they appear in the records when their son Edmund's baptism was recorded (2).

Richard and Mary had five children in Sutton on Trent:

Edmund, baptized March 28, 1778 (3).

Henry, born April 12, 1785; married Susannah Pilley (4).

Alixman, baptized February 21, 1788; married Joseph Harrison (5).

William, baptized September 12, 1790 (6).

Jane, baptized October 25, 1793. Jane died soon after birth, and was buried on November 14 in Sutton on Trent (7).

Generation 2

Henry, the second son of Richard and Mary (if the births in Sutton on Trent include all their children), was born April 12, 1785 in Sutton on Trent. He became a wheelwright and coffinmaker, a similar trade to that practiced by his father (8). On December 26, 1815, in Collingham, Yorkshire, Henry married Susannah Pilley, the twenty four year old daughter of Thomas Pilley, a sea captain, and Ann Hornshaw (9). Collingham, about 10 miles south and east of Sutton on Trent, is on the border between Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire; South Collingham, in Nottinghamshire, is where Henry and Susanna were married. South Collingham had a population of 539 in 1801 and 834 in 1851, comparable in size to Sutton on Trent, which had 601 people in 1801 and 1262 by 1851. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NTT/SouthCollingham/index.html

Henry and Susanna were Baptists. We don't know if Henry and Susanna's parents were also Baptists, although the memory of Susanna's granddaughter that "her people were Church of England clergymen" suggests that she may have converted from Church of England (10).

Henry and Susanna had eight children born in Collingham; all lived except their first son Richard who died at age 4. When the youngest child was one, they left England for unknown reasons, and with Henry's sister and her family took ship for America. They settled in Harbor Creek in Erie Co. in western Pennsylvania. Susanna died there August 22, 1864, and Henry on May 23, 1870 (11).

Children of Henry and Susanna, all born at Collingham, Nottinghamshire, England:

Ann, b. October 29, 1816, married William Long, December 22, 1839, Erie, Erie Co., PA (12).

Elizabeth, b. March 2, 1818, married first James Thomas, December 23, 1845, Erie, Erie Co., PA, second Albert Wood. She died in 1895 (13).

Richard b. July 30, 1820, died August 6, 1824 (14).

Thomas, b. July 23, 1822, married Elizabeth Van Natta, September 3, 1846, Erie, Erie Co., PA (15).

Edward, b. May 4, 1824, married first Laura Lyon, May 14, 1846, second Mabel Van Natta (sister to Elizabeth). He died November 19, 1903 (16).

Susanna, b. June 26, 1826, married Henry Drake (17).

Henry, b. July 11, 1829, married Georgiana Douglas, October 1850, Milwaukee, WI (18).

Richard, b. August 9, 1832, died April 23, 1874, Princeton, MO (19).

Generation 3

About 1839, seventeen year old Thomas Mozley "embraced the Savior at Kingsville, Ohio". He was educated there, but was back in Erie by 1842 where he was a member of the Erie Baptist church; three years later the church licensed him to preach (20). Thomas became a naturalized U. S. citizen August 5, 1844 in Erie Co.; Joseph Harrison, probably his uncle, was his sponsor (21). Thomas became engaged to Elizabeth Van Natta, the daughter of William Van Natta, a sailor, and Sarah Thompson (22). In June of 1846, he wrote to his fiancee from Milwaukee, WI, where he was searching for a place for them to live. He reported " [I] am told by all I have conversed with here that the Country N & West of Milwaukie is far superior to that about Chicago however if I am spared I shall see for myself in a day or two providing the wind is fair & shall then be able to determine whether
to remain in this country or not at present I hardly know what to do" (23). Thomas and Elizabeth were married a few months later, September 3, 1846, in Erie, Erie Co., PA (24). Soon after their marriage, Thomas and Elizabeth moved west to what became Green Lake Co., WI, but was then part of the Marquette District in the Wisconsin Territory (25). Wisconsin became a state in 1848, and Green Lake Co. was formed in 1858 (26).

Children of Thomas and Elizabeth, born in Marquette, Green Lake Co., WI:

Mary Elizabeth, b. September 22, 1847, died April 15, 1864 (27).

Thomas Pilley, b. March 27, 1849, died September 3, 1850 (28).

Sarah Jane, b. July 13, 1851, married Frank Blackmon (29).

Julia Anna, b. December 4, 1853, married Frederick England (30).

Harriet Newell, b. September 6, 1855, married Samuel Scholes (31).

William James, b. June 17, 1857, married Alida Collins. They lived in Dickinson, ND (32).

Henry Fremont, b. May 18, 1862, married Eliza Root (33).

Generation 4

Harriet Newell Mozley was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. I was surprised to discover, when researching a different family line, a Harriet Newell Black, born in Pennsylvania in 1832, and later learned that Harriet Newell was one of the first American woman missionaries. Harriet Newell was the wife of a Baptist minister, traveled to India with her husband, and died there in 1812 (34).

Harriet Mozley married Samuel Scholes, a blacksmith, in Marquette, WI, January 28, 1875 (35). She wrote a brief account of it many years later, June 28, 1939. "Andrew Ingus [Ingers?] & Emma Suly [Suby?] walked up to [our house]

through the dew at 5 a.m. to be at our wedding & of course ate breakfast

with us. My father, Rev. Thomas Mozley, tied the knot then at 6. The

buss came & Samuel & I rode to Ripon to stay a week at Englands" (36). Their children were Nellie, Bonnie, Samuel Ray, and Anna Laura (37).

Footnotes

1. Bishop's transcripts, Sutton on Trent, England, Baptisms, marriages, and burials. FHL film # 503821. In Henry's birth record, Richard's occupation is given as carpenter, in Alixman's as wheeler. Occupation was not recorded at the other children's baptisms. International Genealogical Index, England, familysearch.org. There is an entry in the International Genealogical Index for Richard Mosley's marriage to Mary Marshall, November 2, 1775, Sutton on Trent, which I was not able to find in the Bishop's transcripts; however, the records for 1775 are very difficult to read.
