The Crandall Family Story, from Elder John (1617/1618-1676) to Hattie Eloise (1862-1910)

Generation 1
John Crandall was born 15 Feb 1617/1618, possibly in Gloucestershire, England. (See Crandall Family Association Webpage, http://www.geocities.com/~wyatt1599/cfa/contents.html). He married Mary Opp, in March of 1649, in Essex Co., MA. By 1651, he was living in Newport, RI, and was a member of the Baptist church there. In 1671, he and some other settlers were imprisoned by Connecticut, who claimed jurisdiction over the area where they were living. Mary died August 20, 1670 in Westerly, RI. John remarried Hannah Gaylord. He died six years later, November 29, 1676, in Newport. John and Mary had seven children:
John, born about 1649, married Elizabeth Gorton.
James, born about 1651.
Jane, born about 1653, married Job Babcock.
Sarah, born about 1654, married Josiah Witter.
Joseph, born about 1661, married Deborah Burdick.
Samuel, born in 1663, married Sarah Colby.
Peter, born about 1665, married Mary Babcock.
John and Hannah had two children:
Jeremiah, born 1673, married Priscilla Warner.
Eber, born 1678, married first Patience Lanphere, second Mary Cottrell.
Generation 2
Joseph Crandall became a Seventh Day Baptist minister, ordained in 1715. He was pastor of the church at Newport, RI. He married Deborah Burdick, daughter of Robert Burdick and Ruth Hubbard, around 1681, in Westerly, RI. Joseph died in 1737 in Newport. He and Deborah had eight children:

Lydia, b. abt 1683, in Westerly, m. Robert Babcock.
Joseph, b. abt 1684, Westerly, m. Ann Langworthy.
Mary, b. abt 1686, Westerly, m. Nathaniel Wells.
Deborah, b. abt 1688, Westerly, m. Dr. George Stillman. Deborah and George are also direct ancestors, through their granddaughter Rhoda. Rhoda married Daniel Coon, and was the great grandmother of Phebe Coon. Phebe married Samuel Clark Bassett.
Thankful, b. abt 1690, Westerly, married Stephen Saunders. After Thankful's death, Stephen married Rachel Bliven. Stephen and Rachel's granddaughter Thankful Saunders married Augustus Crandall, and was the great great grandmother of Hattie Eloise Crandall.
Tacy, b. abt 1692, Westerly, m. John Lewis.
Jane, b. abt 1694, m. Cyrus Richmond.
Generation 3
Joseph married Ann Langworthy, February 15, 1715. Ann was also a descendant of Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper, through her grandmother Rachel Hubbard. Joseph died February 17, 1750. Ann lived until 1773.

James W., b. May 12, 1719, Westerly, married first Demaris Kenyon, second Elizabeth Chase.
William Edwin, b. August 6, 1721, Westerly, m. Deborah Crandall.
Simeon, b. January 15, 1724, Westerly, m. Mary Sweet.
Joshua, b. October 15, 1727, Westerly, m. Eunice Kenyon.
Ezekiel, b. November 21, 1730, Westerly, died young.
Benjamin, b. November 20, 1736, Westerly, m. Alice Kenyon, daughter of Enoch Kenyon and Sarah Eldred.
Ann, b. July 21, 1733, m. James Rhodes.
Generation 4
James married Demaris Kenyon, daughter of Enoch Kenyon and Sarah Eldred, February 27, 1742. Demaris was a descendant of Anne Hutchinson, through her mother Sarah Eldred. (Sarah's mother was Susannah Cole, daughter of John Cole and Susanna Hutchinson. Susanna was the daughter of Anne Hutchinson.)
The Descendants of Elder John Crandall lists James as a Revolutionary War veteran, although he would have been almost sixty at the time. Demaris died about 1767 in Westerly, RI. James remarried Elizabeth Chase, June 6, 1768. Six children were born of each marriage. Elizabeth died about 1778, after giving birth to twin daughters. James died some time after that.

Augustus, b. March 27, 1761, Stonington, CT, m. Thankful Saunders.
Charlotte, b. May 10, 1764, Westerly, m. Paul Babcock.
James, b. July 16, 1766, married first Martha Maxson, second Thankful Babcock.
Children of James and Elizabeth:
Elizabeth, b. August 8, 1769, Westerly, m. Amos Rogers.
Mary, b. August 3, 1771, m. Jonathan Kenyon.
Oliver Chase, b. October 30, 1773, married first Abigail West, second Lydia Saunders.
Demaris, b. July 26, 1776, m. John Babcock.
Nancy, b. September 4, 1778, m. John Kenyon.
Fanny, b. September 4, 1778, m. Dennis Hall.
Generation 5
Augustus Crandall married Thankful Saunders in 1777 in Westerly, RI. Thankful was the daughter of Tobias Saunders and Martha Hall. Augustus was an early settler of Brookfield, NY, listed as a town officer there in 1797. He died in Brookfield July 21, 1831 and is buried in West Edmeston Cemetery. Thankful died in 1839 in Columbia, NY.

Anna, b. abt 1788, married Ichabod Williams.
Cornelia, b. abt 1790.
Martha, b. abt 1792.
Joseph Stanton, 17 Jun 1796, Brookfield, NY, married Olive Coon, a granddaughter of Joshua Coon and Margaret Burdick.
Ethan Pendleton, b. 16 Aug 1800, married Electa Maxson, daughter of Rachel Coon and Joel Maxson, granddaughter of Joshua Coon and Margaret Burdick.
Nancy, married Seth Duncan.
Charlotte Crandall, sister of Augustus, married Paul Babcock, 30 Nov 1780. They were living in Hopkinton in 1790. Charlotte died 20 Jun 1843 in Westerly, and Paul died two years later.

Charlotte, b. 15 Sep 1781, Westerly, RI, married Augustus Crandall, son of Augustus Crandall and Thankful Saunders.

Mary, b. 2 May 1787, married Kenyon P. Crandall, son of Augustus Crandall and Thankful Saunders.

Generation 6
Augustus Crandall married his cousin Charlotte Babcock, September 17, 1803, probably in Brookfield, NY. Augustus was a member of the First Brookfield Seventh Day Baptist Church, and later of the Third Brookfield Church when it was established in West Edmeston in 1823. Charlotte was also a member of the First Brookfield Church. Augustus died in Brookfield, October 9, 1847, and Charlotte a few years later, in 1849.
Augustus and Charlotte had twelve children:
Harriet, born June 13, 1804, died November 14, 1822.
William A., April 11, 1806, Brookfield, died April 6, 1808.

Welcome Babcock, born March 28, 1811, married Emily Dowse.
Charles B., born February 15, 1813, Brookfield, died December 18, 1814.
Jared Babcock, born November 4, 1814, married first Alzina Maxson, second Lodeska Covey.
Jerry, twin, born November 4, 1814, married first Polly Palmer, second Vermeda Babcock.
Phebe
Hannah, born March 10, 1817, Brookfield, died June 15, 1822.
Fidelia, born January 8, 1819, Brookfield, married John Brown.
Asenath, born April 23, 1823, Brookfield, died August 7, 1827.
Cynthia, born September 29, 1827, Brookfield, married Charles D. Coon. They probably moved to Walworth, WI in the 1850s, at the time that Welcome and Emily did.
Generation 7
Welcome Babcock Crandall married Emily Dowse, August 26, 1830. She had been born in Cooperstown, NY, New Year's Eve 1810, the daughter of John Dowse and Violet Peabody. Her brother Roswell married Mary Ann Crandall, a cousin of Welcome's, the daughter of Kenyon P. Crandall and Mary Babcock.
Welcome was a member of Lincklaen Seventh Day Baptist Church in 1848. Emily's obituary records that she became a Seventh Day Baptist some time after her marriage. Welcome and Emily moved to Walworth Co., WI in 1855, with their five children. Welcome died February 3, 1889, in Walworth, and Emily died sixty hours later, according to their obituary in the Sabbath Recorder.

Roswell A., born October 1, 1831, married Juliette Crandall.
Charles Welcome, born October 30, 1833, married Frances Denison.
John Brown, born September 5, 1836, died June 2, 1862, fighting in the Civil War.
William Christie, born November 16, 1841, married Lucy Anne Payne.
Paul Babcock, November 15, 1845, soldier in the 40th WI Volunteer Infantry, married Addie Colburne.
Generation 8
Charles Welcome Crandall married Frances Denison, May 2, 1855, probably in Brookfield, NY, and then moved to Wisconsin. Charles served for a year during the Civil War in the 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged for disability. He worked as a painter and grainer. Frances died in 1900. Charles moved to Baltimore, MD, where he married Mrs. Ella Middlekauf. He died there June 9, 1905.
They had two daughters, Hattie Eloise Crandall who married Clayton Burdick, a Seventh Day Baptist minister, and Fanny T., who married a Mr. Brown and lived in Washington, DC.
