1 think that our Thomas Jefferson Roberts 1, is a son of this Thomas Roberts'.  The ages would fit.1 think the men above are the sons of George Roberts(2)

 

1811 Thomas J. Roberts I, was born in Louisiana, County UNKNOWN. (Taken from the 1860 Census records, Rusk Co. Texas. There is also a very good chance that he was born in Pike County Miss.

1839 December 24, Thomas J. Roberts 1, came from Louisiana to Sabine County Texas. On December 27,1839 he received a Class 3 Land Grant (for single men) Conditional Certificate for 320 acres. He was 28 years old at this time.

 

1844 July 22 Thomas J. Roberts 1, received in Nacogdoches Texas, an Unconditional Land Grant Certificate, Class 2, Old Certificate no. 272, Whole No. 287, for 320 acres, issued in Sabine Co. Texas, Witnessed by Jesse Walling and Isham Chisum. (This information is from the Nacogdoches Head Right Book a record of land disposition issued in East Texas, 1838-1848.)

Texas. (He was 36 and she was 17 years old.)

 

1847 Col. Jesse Walling Gave a Wedding gift of land to Nancy Ann Roberts and

Thomas J. Roberts 1, situated at Millville 10 miles NE of Henderson Tex.

 

Nov. 26,1847 to February 22, 1847 He was the Postmaster in Millville, Texas.

 

July 22, 1852, he was a Deputy Surveyor in Rusk County, Texas. Her surveyed his own land grant. This survey was certified by a Mr. Groms the County Surveyor and recorded in Book "C". pages 343 and 344. The outside cover reads File 286, Rusk, 3rd class, Field notes 320 acres, Patented 9th March 1853 and signed Grooms. A copy of this survey is in my records.

 

1853 March 9,A Land Grant of 320 acres was Deeded to Thomas J, Roberts by the Governor of Texas. 12 miles N23' of Henderson, Rusk County Texas.

1861 May 12,A Deed of Sale for one Slave by the name of Bridget, 26 years old, Black. From R. H. Graham to T. J. Roberts

 

1862 PROPERTY TAX RECORDS ON MICROFILM OF RUSK COUNTY TEXAS, Show that Thomas J. Roberts was an the TAX ROLLS from 1847 to 1862 when his wife's name appeared on 1863 TAX ROLLS, I think that this shows that Thomas J, (Jeff) Roberts died in 1862 or 1863.

Notes for JESSE W. ROBERTS:

Jesse W. Roberts from what records we have seems to have been the most influential of the brothers , they all gave him Power of Attorney to settle the estate of their late father Thomas Jefferson Roberts.

There is no record of him and his wife Martha having any children.

He is buried in the "Old Spanish Fort cemetery" about 15-20 miles north of Nocona, Texas, a few miles from the Red River, and no futher record of Martha or any children

At this time George and Mattie were living in Wilson, Oklahoma.

Dear children we write you a few lines to let you no how we are getting along. we are just able to be up hope this wil find you allwell we have moved to Wilson dont no how long we will be able to stay. we are very well fixed I want you and to come to see us as soon as you can and stay a few days. dont think we will be here much longe if we dont get better. we have not herd from Joe in a long time the Orr folks are all well I guess have not herd frim them in 2 weeaks time are shure hard here nothing doing and no work for people to get by on and so many behind in their taxes

be sure and come rite soon if you have the time to come, So we will look for you real soon. So ans if you cant come. So my eye are give out

3.  JOHN ANDREW2 ROBERTS,1 (THOMAS JEFFERSON1) was born 1854 in Millville, Rusk Co. Texas, and died date unknown, before 1857.  He married SUSAN PARALEE KERSEY January 24, 1878 in Greenwood Dist. Sebastian Co. Arkansas, daughter of JASPER KERSEY and SARAH BROWN.  She was born September 24, 1860 in Greenwood Dist. Sebastian Co. Arkansas, and died Abt. 1903 in Orr Love County Oklahoma. Buried in Orr cemetery.

 

Notes for JOHN ANDREW ROBERTS,1:

John A. (Andrew) Roberts also called Dump, first appears on the 1860 Census taken in Rusk Co. Texas.  His age was six years old,he would of been born in 1854.  They lived in a small town named Millville. A small community about eight miles Northeast of Henderson Texas.

 

John next appears on the 1880 Census in Dayton Township, Sebastian Co. Arkansas.  He is married to Susan Paralee Kersey. The closest town is Huntington, at this time a coal-mining town. There is some mining done at present.

 

His two sons were born there, Jefferson Kenneth, born Dec.22, 1878 and James born Feb.27, 1881.

 

The 1880 Census taken in Prairie Township, Sebastian Co. Arkansas showed his mother Nancy Ann (Walling) Roberts Living with her daughter Ann, who was married to John R. Smoot.  The 1880 Sebastian Co. also showed a Thomas J. Roberts, 23 years old (born 1857).  He was married to Margret G., 24 years old, a son Joseph, age 4 and Ira, age 2.

I checked the Rusk County Property Tax records in Austin Texas

The records show the tax record changed from Thomas J. Roberts to his wife Susan P. Roberts in 1873.  Thomas J. (Jeff) Roberts must have died in 1872 or 1873.  The Tax Record stayed in her name until 1877.  Then the records changed to G. W. Roberts, her eldest son.

 

Sometime around 1877 when George W. Roberts took over the farm in Millville from Nancy Ann Roberts, she and the rest of the family

except George W. and Jesse W. Roberts moved to Dayton Township, Sebastian County Arkansas. there John A. Roberts married Susan Paralee Kersey January 24,1878 in Greenwood Ark. They had two sons, Jefferson K. Roberts was born Dec. 22,1878 and James (Jim) Roberts born February 22,1981.  Issac Preston (Squire) Roberts married Melissa Mississippi Gilstrap Feb.2,1878 in Greenwood Ark.  A son Flavious J. was born March 9, 1879.  Ann Roberts married John R. Smoot, November 2,1879 Dayton Township, Sebastian Co Ark.  Records show that they had two children, Temple and Ola. Their birth dates are unknown.  Nancy Ann was living with Ann and John Smoot in 1880.  From the birth records of John's son, James born 02/27/81 Dayton Township Ark. and Issac's daughter- Fanny Bell born 08/14/83 in Montague County Texas.  The Roberts Families must of left Arkansas a little after Feb. 1881 for they first moved to Grayson County Texas before going on west to Montague County.

 

June 12,1883, Jesse W. Roberts was given a Power of Attorney to sell the estate of Thomas J. Roberts.  was signed in the presence of R. F. Sampson by, Nancy Ann Roberts,G. W. Roberts,T. J. Roberts, J. A. Roberts, I. P. Roberts,J. P. Roberts and Ann and John Smoot.  This is the last record we have of John A. and Thomas J. Roberts.

 

4      John A. Roberts must of died sometime between June 12,1883 and August 26,1887 WHEN SUSAN P. ROBERTS MARRIED HER BROTHER-IN -LAW, GEORGE W. ROBERTS IN MONTAGUE COUNTY TEXAS.

Oklahoma.  He married MELISSA MISSISSIPPI GILSTRAP February 02, 1878 in Greenwood, Sebastian Co. Ark., daughter of JOHN GILSTRAP and MALISA GILBRETH.  She was born March 28, 1863 in ----, Sebastian Co. Ark., and died May 28, 1925 in Orr, Love Co. Okla..

 

Notes for ISAAC PRESTON ROBERTS,1:

Isaac seems to have been the business man of the brothers. He started working in a drygoods and grocery store in Grayson County, Texas. When all of them moved to Montague County, Texas he continnued in the same business and also he was a Justice of the  Peace and preformed many marriage ceremonies. They all moved to Orr, Oklahoma Indian Territory around the 1898s and he not only established a grocerystore but also a bank and ran a post office. He also owned several hundreds of acres of land. When the railroad didn't go through Orr but Ringling instead, he moved to Wilson Oklahoma and he along with Mr. Hodges established a bank there, After his first wife died he got married again to Miss. ___________. When he died he was buried in Orr, alongside his first wife.

Notes for JOSEPHUS FLAVIOUS ROBERTS:

 Ike Roberts told me that when he was growing up in Orr, Oklahoma that Uncle Joe was the Constable thereand served for many years there. From his letters that I read, he was a Justice of the peace in Wilson, Oklahoma and held court there and served court papers.

He carried on an extensive correspondence with his nephew, John A. Roberts. He wrote a lot about his views during the depression and how hard the times were, also about time during the world war 2,  also about when the Social Security Pension started and how much it helped the people which at that time, didn't hardly make a living. A young person reading his letters could get a very good idea of the life and times of people living on small farms and in small towns.

Notes for ANN ROBERTS:

The 1880 US Census, Sebastian Co. Arkansas showed that Her mother, Nancy Roberts was living with them..Sometime around 1882 they all left and went back to Texas and helped settled her father's estate.She and her husband Temple Smoot signed a Power of Attrony to her brother Jesse W. Roberts. This is the last record we have of Temple. The next we know of Ann Smoot was she was in Oilton, Oklahoma and married to a Mr Springfield,, her daughter Ola married a Charles Hinkle and living in Kansas

It is said that Ann Smoot Springfield was living in Oiltown when she died

Bob was born in a small village in Orr, Carter County Oklahoma Indian Territory. As a child he was called "Little Ike". he served in the Air Corp during World War 1, training as as airplane mechanic. he served in the U.S. and also in England.

After the war he drove a cab between Ringling, Wilson and Ardmore. When the oil boom came to that part of Okla. he went to work in the oil fields of Oklahoma, starting as a Roughneck then as a Driller. He worked in all the different oil fields in Oklahoma, Seminole, Shawnee, Oklahoma City, Holldenville and many others.He started with the John Mabee Drilling Co. and continued with them until about 1939 when John's nephew Guy Mabee started contracting in Illinois. During WW2 the Company moved to West Texas where Bob was the Drilling Supt.

He was very well known through the industry as a Down Hole fishing expert. Companies all over west Texas would come to him for advise.

He retired about 1958 to a farm in Carnegie Oklahoma where he planned to raise peanuts, but he unexpectedly died of a heart seizure in March 14, 1958, he was returned to Midland Texas for burial.

Pearl was born August 1st, 1905 in Hewett, a small town just east of Wilson, Oklahoma. She went to school in Wilson  until about the 8th grade. She had to grow up fast for the times were very hard, with her father off in other parts, he mother had to take in washing, picking cotton or anything to to put food on the table.

She hired out to a railroad construction gang, making beds, washing dishes making a few dollars. When her father came home, he made her quite her job for he thought she was too young. She later worked in a cookhouse in a oil field camp along with her aunt, Ann White.

She was 16 years old when she married her husband, Bob Roberts. They were married in 1921 in Ringling Oklahoma. At the time her husband was driving a taxi between Wilson and Ardmore, but soon after he went to the oil fields and they made all the boom towns in Oklahoma.

 On January 16, 1933. Pearl and Bob got a divorce in Oklahoma City, Their two sons stayed with her. She had various jobs, Beauty Operator, Waitress and any work to make a living. While working as a waitress at a cafe on South Robinson in Oklahoma City, she met her future husband Hugh Huntley. He was working at Denny's Service Station which was next to the cafe and he would come in  for lunch or coffee. They were married July 28, 1934.

In 1937 they traded a small house on 23nd and Hudson for 40 acres in Alder Springs, Arkansas. They eventually owned a 120 acre farm in the area where they raised cattle and chickens.

Hugh, her husband died October 1, 1987 and she passed away April 11, 1997 and is buried in the Molly Gann Cemetery along side her husband.
