St. Louis is located in Dyckesville, Town of Red River, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, and 15 miles from Green Bay, Wisconsin. In 1999 they had a membership of 300 families.
St.
Louis Parish was founded in 1863, and the first church was built on land
donated by Louis and Octavia Van Dycke, who were storekeepers in
Dyckesville. Before this all Catholics
in this area had to attend services in Bay Settlement, a ten-mile trek, often
times by foot.
St.
Louis was a mission until 1872 when a rectory and sacristy was added to the
church. Rev. Martin Smitz became
resident pastor, as well as assisting surrounding missions. Rev. Smitz left in 1874 and the parish
became a mission to St. Joseph parish in Champion. There were 125 families in membership.
In
1894 a brick steeple was added to the church.
In 1895 a floor was laid, and in 1896 a Gothic Altar was built. All under the guidance of Rev. J.J. Van
Rooy.
In 1921
Two and three quarters acres were purchases from Henry Smeesters for use as a
cemetery.
The
Church vestibules and confessionals were added in 1925.
In the
1930’s a porch was built on the rectory.
St.
Louis also runs a catholic school with grades from pre-school thru fifth
grade. In 1999 there were 40 students
attending.
