A Song Mary Molloy Used To Sing
O cradle me on your knee
mama
And sing me the holy phrase
For I dreamed a dream of a slumbered lass
I feign would dream again.
I fancied I roved in the woods mama
While resting under a bough
Nearest me a butterfly did flounce and did flutter
It chased me through the forest wide
Saying "Come pretty babe with me"
But night came on and I lost my guide
And I knew not what to do
An angel came down from heaven mama
And beckoned me right up to glory.
Do you mind* the silly old man mama?
Come lately to our door seeking alms
He was in glory too mama
And none had on a costlier robe than he.
*remember
Rebecca Molly remembers her mother singing these words and
reciting them as a poem from her childhood and thinks that her
mother may be the author. Mary Molloy and her husband John
Molloy had several children die quite young. Even if she was
not the author, I can see a connection between the song
and the deaths of her children.
I have searched on Google and other search
engines for phrases from it and could not find any reference to
this song.
