Newport Naval Base:   "FIRST WORLD WAR - World War I brought a tremendous increase in naval activity to Newport as thousands of young men arrived for training. Coaster's Harbor Island was unable to accommodate this influx, and land at Coddington Point was added to the Navy's holdings. Almost overnight, the Point was turned into a city of tents and wooden buildings as more than 75,000 recruits passed through Newport. Residents of the city were encouraged to "Adopt a Sailor," opening their homes as temporary lodging for the trainees. As the Navy expanded, what had been the Second Naval District (the Naval Training Station) was combined with the First Naval District in 1919."  Newport History

17 July 1943 Death of August Dies at the 17th St House

Note:  August was ill for quite a long time previous to his death. His illness was the result of the many years working in the glass factories. The silica dust, I gather from the various letters and the diary written in June and July of 1943, was the cause of his problems.   Another complicating factor was that he smoked both cigarettes and a pipe.  August spent time in the Washington, Pennsylvania area attending a medical clinic.  According to the letters this treatment had been paid for by Ball Brothers Company. Unfortunately, it did not help and soon after his last letter on 10 July, he returned home and died shortly thereafter.   The diary and letters between August and Mabel in June and July of 1943 are all owned by RobbHaas.

The official cause of death according to the death certificate was Left Broncho Pneumeoid Silicosis.

When we got there the neighbors were standing outside - I tried the door and it was locked from the inside - I kicked open the door and found grandma laying on the bedroom floor and she was very scared - I told someone to call for an ambulance - no 911 yet - We followed the ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital and stayed until after they had admitted her. Later I went back to her house and fixed the door.

I remember that Shirley and I would visit her at the hospital and she was unable to speak and when she tried it was so slurred you could not understand her. I would read to her and she seemed to enjoy that.

Her room was 517-1 and she was next to a window.

Woodworking:  August was an accomplished woodworker and has many projects to his credit. Many of his items are still in the possession of family members. Memories of Grandpa These memories were in an email received from the only grandchild fortunate enough to have known August.

As we've discussed, I have a few memories about him. I remember the tattoo on his arm. Strange I would remember that at 2 years old when I'd assume I didn't know the alphabet yet. I also remember sitting in his lap playing with his watch chain. The links looked like little pocket knives and I kept trying to open them. He also let me look at his silver pocket knife and told me he would get me one when I got older. [The knife and the boy have now been reunited] I have the watch in its original case. Grandma Haas gave it to me on my 18th birthday at your house out on S.R. 67.

I also remember him taking me to Ball Bros. where he visited with some of his friends. We drove in the 37 [or 36] Pontiac and went to a parking lot where there was an elevated guardhouse that I thought was pretty cool.

I also remember the day of his funeral, although I didn't go. My dad's sister Marian was watching me and I didn't want to go home. My mother got very upset at me and Aunt Marian calmed the waters. Not long after his funeral, I was asked by a friend in the neighborhood, Herby Dudley what my grandfather died from. I replied, "Old age." (Email 27 Jan 2008)

Did you hear about how he would dissemble their Model T Ford in the garage, hang all the parts on the wall and I assume rebuild the engine about every year? Of course, another story that Mother told me is about how he would build a fire under the crankcase of that car in the Winter to get the oil warm so he could crank start it. The engine must have been really clean. (Email dated 30 Jan 2008)  I26,

Avocations

There was a piano in the home and Mabel could play.  August played the clarinet so it is supposed they played together at times.  S28, I67,

Mabel was  a professional dressmaker and knitting instructor.  She made many wedding dresses and other projects during her lifetime.  She was quite gifted at creating sewn and knitted items for family members.

When the girls were younger she would do a lot of cooking and would prepare noon meals for both the teachers at nearby Stevenson School and also for the workers at Ball Brothers Company.  People would come to the 17th St house to buy their meals.   Mabel was a great cook as can be attested to by her grandson RobbHaas.  According to daughter Norma,

"Mother made pies, jelly and canned a lot of fruit. I remember she used to make lemonade and put cherries in to make it look pretty & appetizing. She made homemade bread - so delicious, we would go around from house to house & sell it. She also baked pork loins and make big sandwich buns. She sold the sandwiches to the employees of Ball Brothers. They really did enjoy them. I also remember she would fix noon meals for the teachers at Stevenson. They would come down to our house and buy their lunch."  Source

The family always had a garden and a backyard full of trees of all sorts including Cherries, Apples, Mulberry.  Many of these items were canned and preserved for later use.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose S58, S59, and also the Fraternal Order of Eagles  Pin

Some Comments from Living, ID0452:  Email of 19 Jan 2013

Just for the record, Caroline Whetstone also spoke German, specifically Pennsy-Deitsch and it was probably her "birth" language. Mother Said that August and Caroline frequently spoke German together which angered Mabel because she thought they were talking about her and didn't want her to know what they were saying.
Until I was 8 or 10 years old I thought that the Haas's came from Holland. Mother corrected me but I remember August saying that he spoke "Dutch". Even then I knew about wooden shoes, windmills, etc. and assumed he meant Holland.

Regarding the time I sat on August's lap and played with his knife and watchchain: About a year ago I was visiting my Amish friends to get milk, bread, etc. The women were in the process of cutting a hog backbone into chops. Their meatsaw was very dull and they were having a hard time, so I started helping them. One of the girls (28 years old) referred to the saw as "stoomp". Suddenly, 68 years melted away and I recalled August saying that if I got my own knife it would have to be "stoomp", which means dull. I vaguely remember him saying other words to me I didn't understand. I think he may have been introducing me to his other language, but I' m not 100% sure about that. I do know he never spoke in German to Mother or taught her any words, although I'm certain he was fluent. German may have actually been his birth language. Again, I think Mabel's aversion to German was the reason for this.

Had he lived a normal lifespan, you and I may have learned a little Pennsy-Deitch along the way!

He often told the story of snow blowing between the logs and having to shake it off his blankets in the morning. "he said they used to skinny-dip in this river, we assumed it was the Auglaze, but don't for sure. S37 Receipt and written message about Happy Smith Acc000167

Note:    On the back of a receipt for an insurance payment is written the following by Mabel:  "There is a cancelled check for $2,259.55 cashed Mar. 30-54 [1954].  $2,000.00 was loaned to Herbert Defibaugh known as Happy Smith also, for the purchase of a universal electric machine with 5 motors for woodworking. To be installed at his place in Pittock Pa. It was purchased from the Ervin Elec. Co in McKees Rocks, Pa. The rest of the money from check was used to pay my bills. Long over due. [Signed] Mabel M. Haas"
Personal memory of RobbHaas:
Happy Smith was a con man who was involved with Grandma Haas for a couple of years or more. He is responsible for enclosing the front porch of the home at 1927 E 17th St in Muncie. I remember there were two children, a boy and a girl, associated with him and they were about my age so they would have been about 10 to 12 years old at the time. They stayed with us on our 110-acre farm a few times.  I also remember there were lots of bad feelings with the daughters about this situation. As I recall Happy and Grandma were supposed to be setting up some sort of a company somewhat like Goodwill Industries somewhere in Pennsylvania and this machine and other expenses were made in this effort.

(1)  This headstone is located in Lot 527 of the IOOF/ Hartford City, Blackford County, Indiana Cemetery.  It is acknowledged that it was carved by August Haas (The daughters agreed that he had carved it).  What is not certain is just who the stone was originally carved for.  It was always assumed it was for Mattie Klinger Worthen since it is in her burial plot.  Grandson of August, ID0452, remembers seeing this stone at the E. 17th St. house when he was a young boy and thought that someone was buried there.  Now it is in the IOOF Cemetery.  When it was moved and by whom is a mystery.  Is it possible that August actually carved this stone for HIS mother, Caroline Whetstone Haas,  who died in 1928?  This makes a lot more sense because August would not have known Mattie since she died in 1910 before he had met Mabel.
