Culpeper County Virginia was formed in 1749 from a part of Orange Co Virginia and named for Colonial Governor of Virginia(1680-83)--Lord Thomas Culpeper. The county seat at one time was known as Fairfax and named after Lord Culpeper's son-in-law, Lord Thomas Fairfax. Later its name was changed and today it is called the town of Culpeper .
