Friedrich & Anna Catherina Bittmann
Most of the information presented here on the earliest generations of the Pittman ancestors in Virginia and Germany was copied from what was published in Bly (1993, Vol I). That author indicated that the primary sources of information on the German Bittmann families were the Lutheran parish register of Framersheim and a few earlier tax lists.
Bly indicated that Friedrich is the earliest known ancestor of the family. He and his wife were at Framersheim in the 1660's and he died there in 1708 at the age of 80. No other Bittmann individuals were identified during that time period in Framersheim other than his son Hans Heinrich. Bly states that Friedrich's son Hans Heinrich and grandson Andreas were masons by trade.
Three of Friedrich's grandsons were known to have emigrated to the U.S. and settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in the late 1700's;
- Nicolaus, born 1727 in Framersheim, Germany; died abt. 1798 near Strasburg, Shenandoah Co, Virginia.
- Antonius, born 1736 in Framersheim, Germany; died 1803 in Stephens City, Shenandoah Co, Virginia.
- Johann Philipp, born 1741 in Framersheim, Germany; died 1820 in Shenandoah Co, Virginia.
