Thomas Jefferson Hefley Family

THOMAS "Tom" J HEFLEY was born 25 December 1873 in Newton County, Arkansas.
He was son of Nathaniel "Natty" James and Elizabeth Tennison Hefley. Have even seen Nathaniel James' name written as "Maddy Jim" Hefley; someone stated because he had a bad temper.
Thomas married LU ELLA "Eller" GUTHRIE ON 8 July 1891 (Book D,page93)in Newton County, Arkansas. Eller was born 25 Aug 1877 in Arkansas, the daughter of Owen Guthrie and Mary Jane Hicks. Eller was sister to Elizabeth Frances "Fannie" Guthrie Hefley who married William "Billy" Hefley(son of Daniel and Eliza J. Greenhaw Hefley.
Had more information on this Guthrie Family showing them on a census, but am unable to locate this right now.Will add information later.

(1) VIOLA MYRTLE HEFLEY, born 4Feb1893 in Newton County and died 22 March 1954.
She married ELMER LESTER HEFLEY(son of William Bailey Hefley and Margaret Cheatham) on 17 Oct 1912 (page 208)Newton County, Arkansas. Elmer was born 1 Feb 1892 and died 22 March 1954.
They are buried in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

i:E. LESTER MARVIN HEFLEY, born 8 Aug 1913. He married AUDREY PAYNE, 18, of Bass, on 14 April 1931 (page 389) in Newton County. Lester died 4 Dec 1975 with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

ii: GUSSIE MAE HEFLEY, born 18 Sept 1914 at Mt. Judea, Arkansas. Gussie married JAMES W NICHOLS in 1934.Gussie died 31 July 1999 with burial in the Mt. Judea Cemetery.
I called Gussie on the telephone several times, but her memory was fading.

GUSSIE MAE NICHOLS, 85, Mt. Judea
Gussie Mae Nichols age 85 of Mt. Judea, Arkansas died Saturday, July 31, 1999 at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison. She was born September 18, 1914 in Mt. Judea, Arkansas, the daughter of Elmer and Viola (Heffley)Hefley.
She was a member of the Mt. Judea Church of Christ, a grocery store proprietor, home maker and lifelong resident of Mt. Judea. She was preceded in death by her husband James W Nichols, her son, Charles (Junior), grandson Roger Lynn, great-granddaughter Sierra Lynn Nichols, sister Wilsie Ann Cook; brothers Lester, Custer and Athel Hefley.
She was married to her husband James for 53 years before he preceded her in death in 1987.
Survivors include her grandson Rockey Gene Nichols and his daughters Laken and Kaitlynn; granddaughters: Kim Renee Nichols Horn and her husband Kurt and their son Kendall of Dallas, Texas; and Robin Jeanette Nichols Holder and her husband Kevin and their daughter Megan of Pindall, Arkansas; brothers Russell Hefley of Pelsor and E.L. Hefley of Little Rock, and sister Lois Sain of Pelsor.
Services were Wednesday, August 4, 1999 at Mt. Judea Church of Christ with Loyd Dodson, Jr. officiating. Burial waas in Mt. Judea Cemetery under the direction of Coffman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Carl Louis Cook, Kevin Cook, Shelvon Gregory, Ronnie Campbell, Dennis Sain, James Hefley, Billie Cheatham, Charlie Hefley, Bill Hefley and Mack David Hefley.

iii: CUSTER M."Oxhead" HEFLEY, born 16 Feb 1916. He married SINA E. FORD. Custer died 11 April 1996 at Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, with burial in Tarlton Cemetery in Newton County.
Custer was survived by his wife and children: 1) Billy Hefley of Dover,Arkansas
2)Donna Sue Stevens of South Lake Tahoe
3)Daisy Clayborn of Deer,Arkansas
4) Margaret Bartle of Mt. Judea, Arkansas.

iv:WILSIE ANN HEFLEY, born 20 Aug 1919 at Mt. Judea. She married BEECHER F COOK ca 1939. Wilsie Ann died 29 June 1999 with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

vi: ATHEL "A" HEFLEY, born 1926. He died in 1955 with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

Jesse married (2) CLYDIE OMA DAVIS ca 1939. Clydie was born 22 June 1913 in Newton County, the daughter of Albert Daniel and Arkansas Rena Hefley Davis. Clydie died 19 April 1984 and is buried in Omaha Cemetery, Boone County, Arkansas.

(3)WILLIAM PINK HEFLEY,born 25 July 1900 (also show date of July1899). He married BLANCHE HOOVER.
Known children were: Jesse Glen and Ernest Hefley.
William Pink Hefley died 15 Sept 1985 at unknown place.

(4)BERTHIE HEFLEY, born 1902. She married ARTHUR CRINER, 19, on 10 July 1916 (page 208)in Newton County, Arkansas.
Berthie died 8 Jan 1979 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

(5)ALTA "Altie" JANE HEFLEY,born 3 Jan 1903. She married (1)ARTHUR FOSTER on 19 Aug 1929. She married (2) Mr. MARTIN.
Do not have a list of her children, if any.
Alta died 25 Nov 1989 with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

(6)ROY LEE HEFLEY, born 29 March 1906 at Mt. Judea.He married JULIA SUTTON on 21 April 1931 in Newton County.
Children:
i: Clyde Denton Hefley who married JEWELDEAN LaFAVOR.
ii: Edward Clayton Hefley who married IVA LOUISA TERRY.
Roy Lee Hefley died 17 June 1996 at Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery in Newton County.
Julia Sutton Hefley just recently passed away. More later.

(7)LUCY A. HEFLEY,, born 23 Dec 1908. I show her marrying LEVI ARVIL CRINER on 23 April 1925 (page 450)in Newton County.
Lucy died 31 Jan 1979 with burial in Criner Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas.

Frederick Joseph Hefley died 30 Sept 1988 at Harrison, Arkansas with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery in Newton County.
Hester Hosannie Foster, born 10 Sept 1906, was daughter of PULLIAM FOSTER and BARBARA JANE SUTTON. Hester died 30 April 1984 with burial in Mt. Judea Cemetery.

FREDERICK HEFLEY, 77 of Harrison

Frederick Joseph Hefley, aged 77, of Harrison, died Saturday, Sept. 3 at North Arkansas Medical Center. He was born April 25, 1911 in Mt. Judea, the son of Thomas J. and Ella Guthrie Hefley. He was a retired merchant, a prior resident of Mt. Judea for 46 years, a well-known gospel singer, a member of the Pine Street Baptist Church in Harrison and a member of the Harrison Senior Citizen's Organization.
He was also a "champion" coon hunter and his dogs won numerous trophies at field trials across the country, including the "All-American" Award in 1956. He was also an avid fisherman and served as a guide for the Lead Hill Boat Dock for 16 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hester Foster Hefley, two brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. James Carl Hefley of Hannibal, MO., Howard Jean Hefley of Kansas City, MO and John Paul Hefley of Kansas City, MO; five daughters, Betty Loucille Burdine of Deer, Mary Louise Stewart of Tullahoma, Tenn., Jimmie Fern Winstead of Riverside, Calif., Freddie Gelease Walker of Harrison and Patricia Ann Gail Henderson of Independence, Mo.; two brothers, Roy Lee Hefley of Mt. Judea and Loma Hefley of Lodi, Calif.; two sisters, Alta Jane Foster of Harrison and Elsie Mae Reddell of Dover; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. at Christeson Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Cantrell officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Judea Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Boyce Burdine, John Wray Jr., Jeff Wiskur, Clyde Hefley, Lewis Hefley, Pat Merriman, Billy Burdine, Jason Hefley, Jeffery Hefley, Randy Morrow and Oral Criner.
Honorary pallbearers were Beet Edwards, Noil Martin, James Hefley, Custer Hefley, Larry Henderson, Tim Stewart, Jack Louellen, Dr. Ross Fowler, L.R.Criner, Bily Hefley, Leo Walton and Bill Lemon.

(9)LOMA W. HEFLEY,born 1914. He married CLARA JACKSON on 13 Feb 1932 (page 534)in Newton County. Do not have a list of their children.
Loma died in August 1990 in Lodi, California and is buried at Arvin, California.

(10)BESSIE HEFLEY,born 1916.She is on the 1920 Newton County, Arkansas Census in Big Creek Township, shown as age 4-8/12.

(11)ELSIE MAE HEFLEY.She is listed as age 8/12 on the Janurary 1920 Newton County, Arkansas Census, Big Creek Township.
She married JAMES MITCH REDDELL on 30 Dec 1931 (page 450)in Newton County.
Elsie died 26 June 2000 at Russellville and is buried in McFadden Cemetery at Dover, Pope County, Arkansas.

Thomas Jefferson Hefley, died 18 July 1939. Lu Ella "Eller" Guthrie Hefley died 18 Feb 1936. They are buried in Hefley Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas.
