This information was gathered from many sources.
The 1860,1870,1880,1900 and 1910 Newton County, Arkansas census

family in Newton County, Arkansas. She married Mr. Cross in
St. Charles County, Missouri.
Oleta Haddock compiled "Cemetery Records of Newton County" which is a
gold mine of information, listing all known burials in Newton County,

Without this book, I would be unable to do even half of my research
work.
and wife Anny Jane Murphy Cross were in Newton County, Arkansas in
Jackson Township, having been married on 15 August 1847 in Newton
County. They had no children listed.
William Cross enlisted in CO. G, First Arkansas Infantry,(Union) and
commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He was said to be a "shirt-tailed"
relative to Captain James Vanderpool. William Cross was killed in
battle in Newton County on 1 June 1863 by Confederate forces when the
infantry, led by Captain Vanderpool, returned to Newton County to
recruit and rescue men who had been left behind when the soldiers had
to retreat to Fayetteville in April of 1863.
It should be noted that Anna Jane Murphy Cross stated in her Widows
Application that the records of Newton County were destroyed in March
of 1863. She filed for Widow's Civil War Pension from Green County,
Missouri.
It is uncertain if William Cross was at all related to Susanna Burdine
Cross. William may have been a nephew of her husband. I believe he
was related somehow.
in St.Charles County,Missouri. He was married the first time to an
unknown woman and married secondly to Isabelle Collins on 8 August 1859
in Newton County, Arkansas.
Isabelle Collins had a son Thomas F. Collins before she married
John Cross.
I found Susannah Cross, age 49, born Missouri with son:
(1)John Cross, age 23,born 1840 in Missouri. Isabel, John's
wife is age 22 born in Indiana.
(2)Agnes Cross age 16,born in Arkansas . Notice that the
Burdine family used the name Agnes in their naming pattern. No further
record of Agness Cross could be found.
(4)James Cross, age 11 born Arkansas and Thomas F Collins, age
3, born in Arkansas.
(3)Mary Polly Cross age 14, born Nov 1848 is not at home at

children Thomas F Collins, age 13; Mary E Cross age 6 and Susan A
Cross age 3, and Rutha Collins age 63 born Indiana, mother of Isabelle
Collins Cross.
Could this "Rutha"Collins be the Berthy Collins listed on the 1860
Newton County census as wife of Ingram Collins, Prarie Township, Visit
# 191?
Ingram Collins was born in Kentucky in 1805, believe Knox County.
His father was David Collins Jr. and his mother was Mary Dodson\Dotson.
Since writing this story, have researched and gathered lots of Collins
information on many Collins families.
James Cross age 20,born in Arkansas.
Meanwhile, Child No. 3, Mary Polly Cross, daug. of Susanna Burdine

(f)Susanna Elizabeth Collins, born 1880 who married J C Owens in 1901.
(g)Cordelia(Helen?)Collins, b 1884 who married Willie Royce.
It is believed that Edmund Collins was born in Knox County,Kentucky
and was three-fourths Indian. His wife Mary Polly Cross Collins was
believed to be three-fourths Indian also.
Perhaps this is why I was unable to find a marriage record for Susanna
Burdine to Mr. Cross, for marriages to Indians were not readily
recorded.
Mary Polly Cross Collins' death date is unknown, but she is buried in
Deffenbaugh Cemetery, Hasty, (Newton Co.)Ark. with no grave marker.
child No. 4, James Cross, age 30, is found. He had married
Mary Hamilton on 14 January 1876 in Newton Co..Ark. She was daughter
of Thomas B Hamilton and first wife Mary (maiden name unknown)Hamilton.
Her stepmother was Rebecca Johnson Lane Hamilton.
Mary Cross is listed as age 28 with son John Cross age 1 listed.

Kentucky.
Collins Cross, age 41. Her husband John Cross (son of Susanna) had
died 5 December 1878 and is thought to be buried in the Carver
Cemetery,Newton County,Ark. per his Civil War record. He is entitled
to a Union Civil War marker if some of the Cross family want to pursue
this matter. I understand you can still order a military marker for
the Civil War soldiers.
Isabelle Collins Cross drew husband John's Civil War Pension.

on 7 March 1892. Buried in Carver Cemetery, Newton County. Was he the
one killed by Jim"Striker"Tennison?? YES
Does anyone remember the story? The story told to me was,
Cross was out in a field plowing and Jim "Striker"Tennison came to
the field where Cross was working. Cross owed Tennison a small amount
of money and said he would pay Tennison as soon as he got the money.
Tennison pulled out a knife and stabbed Cross, killing him.
Tennison served time in prison for this killing.

In answer to the Elmer Cross question.
Elmer Cross was a man who came to Newton County and worked there for
years. His family lived elsewhere and only came to visit him about
once before he died.
Is anyone researching the Cross families and could add to this
information??
