Nathaniel Smith was born 24 December 1860 in Newton County, Arkansas,
son of Alfred SMITH and his second wife Rebecca FLOOD
He was their second born son, undoubtedly named for Rebecca's father
Nathaniel Flood\Flud.
Alfred and Rebecca's other children were: Jerry "Big Jerry" Smith;
Mary Elizabeth; Peggy Emeline; Levi; John C; David Crockett;
William Simon; Sarah Ann; and James Columbus Smith
Alfred Smith's first wife was NANCY JANE BRASSFIELD who he married
15 February 1855 in Newton County, Arkansas. They had one child:
William Riley "Bogus" Smith, born 22 November 1856, who was born,
"an idiot" said due to complications from mother being scared by pet
bear. The bear may have gotten loose and Nancy was so frightened she
went into early labor and William Riley Smith was born prematurely,
or he was injured at birth.
William Riley "Bogus" lived with his grandparents and was living
with grandfather Jeremiah Smith on the 1880 Newton County, Arkansas
Census.
William Riley Smith died sometime in the 1930s and is buried in
Smith Cemetery without a marker.
Nancy Jane Brassfield Smith died 1 December 1856 shortly after William Riley Smith's birth

Mary Ellen Pierce was born ca 1865\68 in Arkansas?, the
daughter of Morgan PIERCE and Martha Jane HINES.
NOT
the daughter of Charlotte Owens and James Pierce as once thought.

Morgan PIERCE was born in 1823 in Lincoln County, Missouri
He married MARTHA JANE HINES on 1 November 1846 in Lincoln County,
Missouri.
Martha was daughter of Thomas HINES and Nancy McBRIDE
Their children were:
Matilda; John (John Robert?); Flora Ann Jamerson; M.T.(male);
Mary Ellen; Lydia Pierce Flannagan Hamilton and Salvader "Vade" Theodore Pierce.

Martha Jane Hines Pierce died ca 1872, probably in Lincoln County, Missouri.
Morgan died in Lincoln County, Missouri 13 March 1885.
Found the family living in Coal County, Oklahoma on the 1920 census
in Haskell Township, Visit 224-228

(2) EMANUEL W."JERRY" SMITH
born October 1884 who was adopted by John Kink Flud and moved to Oklahoma.
Manuel W Smith is listed with John Kink Flud family on the 1900
census as "adopted".
Died ca 1933 in Oklahoma
He possibly married LASSIE DABBS??
(3)WILLIAM A SMITH
born November 1886 in Newton County.
Adopted by John & Tony Pierce Barnes.
Died after 1900 as he was on the 1900 Newton County, Arkansas Census
with his grandmother Smith.
Supposed to have gone to Missouri.
He may have gone to live with a Barnes family in Missouri
(4) REBECCA SARAH ANNIE SMITH
born 24 August 1887 in Newton County.
She married SIMON NEWTON EDDINGS on 19 August 1904 in Newton County.
She died 13 February 1951 in Pimal County, Arizona


(5) MARTHA FLORA JANE SMITH
born 16 March 1890 in Newton County.
Martha was adopted by John Liles
She married K. GILMORE on 28 December 1905 in Newton County.

Several of their Gilmore children still live in California.
Martha died 1 October 1966 at Gustine, Fresno County, California
(6) NATHANIEL SMITH, JR.
born 23 November 1892 in Newton County
He married CANZADA ELIZABETH "Betty" EDDINGS on 10 November 1910 in
Newton County.
They had nine children.
Canna; Anna May; Troy; Delpha; Roy; John Calvin; Cosetta; Tommy and
Floyd Smith

Nathaniel Smith, Jr. died on 20 July 1946 in Fresno, California
and is buried in Fresno Cemetery
Canzada Elizabeth "Betty" Eddings Smith died 20 May 1935 in childbirth after having Floyd Smith
She is buried at Ft. Cobb, Oklahoma

Nathaniel Smith Sr. died 27 July 1891 and is buried in
Coppers Bluff Cemetery, Newton County, Arkansas.
He supposedly died from eating green apples.
Mary Ellen Pierce died 23 Nov 1892 from complications of childbirth a
few days after Nathan Smith Jr. was born.
Neighbors went to check on her and she was dead...had bled to death.
Daughters Martha and Sarah were in the house with her.
1900 Newton Co. AR. census shows these children living
with different families....adopted by several.
Sarah and William A Smith were living with the John and Emeline
Barnes Family in 1900 in White Township of Newton County, Arkansas
as "adopted".
Martha Smith "adopted" was living with the John and Becky A Liles
family in 1900
Nathaniel Smith was living with the Mart and Rhoda C Smith family
on 1900 census as "adopted".
Manuel W Smith was living with the John Kink Flud family in 1900 as
"adopted".
