Nathaniel Burdine and grandson Vester Burdine

By researching collateral families, I find lots of information also

Nathaniel Burdine was born 11 November 1844 in Calhoun County,
Illinois on Eniver (Quiver?)Island, per his Civil War Pension Record
Eniver Island was between Illinois River and Eniver River on a map.

His father was William Burdine and his mother was
Elizabeth Vesterman?,Winchester, Neal (per my records).

Nathaniel served in Company B, First Arkansas Cavalry (Union) during
Civil War. He was taken prisoner at Prairie Grove on 7 December 1862
and was paroled by Rebel Colonel Maginis (date not given), reported to
Benton Barracks, Missouri (date not given).

Nathaniel's physical description states he was 5 feet 8 inches tall,
fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair.

Elizabeth Vesterman Winchester Neal Burdine had been married before
and had Winchester and Neal children.
In the book "Missouri Separations, etc." Amos Burdyne appeared in a
St. Louis, Missouri court for Elizabeth Neal as her "best friend" when
she was divorcing Litel Neal.
She married Litel Neal on 27 March 1837 in St. Charles County,
Missouri,per "Missouri Marriages" by Susan Ormesher.
Elizabeth divorced Litel Neal on 29 April 1842 in St. Charles County,
Missouri
Elizabeth's known Winchester and Neal children were:

1.Thomas Winchester 1830, who married Rachel Asher 1854\55 in
Newton County, Arkansas.

2.Sarah Angeline Winchester 1834 who married Benjamin Brazzell in Calhoun
County, Illinois on 14 August 1851.

3.Harriett A Winchester 1835 who married Anderson H. Riley on
3 March 1854 in Calhoun County, Illinois.

4.Frank Neal 1838.

5.Phebe Neal 1838. She married James P. Aldridge on 18 August
1855 in Clay County, Illinois.

William Burdine and Elizabeth Burdine's children were:
6. Nathaniel Burdine, born 11 November 1844 in Calhoun County,
Illinois.

7.Canzada Burdine 1849. She married Thomas Shatswell on 7 February
1868 in Newton County, Arkansas.
Thomas Shatswell divorced Canzada in Newton County.
I do not know what happened to Canzada.

The 1850 Calhoun County, Illinois Census in Gillead Township shows the
following:

......Note that Angeline Winchester was listed with the previous family
Frank, age 12, born MO (attended school within the year)
Phebe, age 12, born MO
Nathaniel, age 9, born Illinois
Kanzada, age 2, born Illinois

William Burdine is on the 1860 Newton County, Arkansas Census in White
Township, age 53 born Kentucky

Nathaniel Burdine married Sarah Jane Pierce (Owens) who was born
11 January 1847. Sarah was the daughter of Mary "Polly" Pierce who later
married John Cranston Owens.
It is said a Pierce raised her

Nathaniel and Sarah Burdine's children were:
1.WILLIAM HENRY BURDINE Born 28 February 1868 in Newton County.
William had his birthdate changed to 1 March 1868
February 1868 was a leap year that year.
William married:
(1)Edie Louise Cooper 31 January 1889 in Newton County, Arkansas
Edie Louise Cooper Buridine died after having two children and is buried
in Smith Cemetery, Newton County, Arkansas
Her two children were raised by Edie Louise Cooper Burdine's mother
Sarah Flood Smith Cooper.
William Henry Burdine then married Nancy Mayberry in 1893 in Newton
County.
William Henry died 20 August 1849 and is buried in Smith Cemetery

2.MARY CANZADA BURDINE, born 11 October 1869.
She married John L Baker on 4 November 1888 in Newton County, Arkansas
After having several children, Mary Canzada died. Her husband gave the
children away.
George Burdine and Mt.Jerry Smith went after the children. They brought
Thomas and Angie Baker back to Newton County. They could not find
baby Lee Baker who was being kept by a family that wanted him.
Children were:
i:Angie Baker, born 1889.
She married James Louis Bolin on 26 August 1906 in Newton County
Believe she was James Louis Bolin's secnd wife.

ii:James Thomas Baker, born 19 June 1893.
He married Rhoda Reddell on 23 July 1914 in Newton County.
They had a son Lonnie Baker, born 24 May 1917 but who died 9 June 1917 and is buried in Smith Cemetery
James Thomas died 29 November 1928 with burial in Smith Cemetery, Vendor
Arkansas.
His widow Rhoda Reddell Baker later married John Martin of Vendor on
21 December 1929.

iii:Lee Baker.Birth date unknown.
He was kept by a couple who wanted him after the father gave the Baker
children away.
Oliver Smith later visited Lee Baker, I am told

Do not know when or where Mary Canzada Burdine Baker died or where she
is buried but believe the Pope County bottoms.

3.JAMES FRANKLIN BURDINE, born 22 September 1873.
He married Mary Levina "Viney" Smith on 31 December 1896 in Newton County
Arkansas.
They are the parents of Vester Burdine, shown in the picture with
grandfather Nathaniel Burdine
James Franklin Burdine died 28 May 1913 and is buried in Smith Cemetery
Newton County, Arkansas.

4.GEORGE RAYMOND BURDINE, born 12 May 1875.
He married Annie Atkinson on 29 January 1905 in Newton County, Arkansas

George Raymond Burdine on 10 April 1954 and is buried in Smith Cemetery
Newton County, Arkansas

5.SARAH A. BURDINE, born 29 January 1878.
She married Jerry M. Smith "Mt. Jerry" on 18 November 1897 in Newton
County, Arkansas
Sarah A Burdine Smith died 15 August 1958 with burial in Judea Mountain
Cemetery, Newton County.

Sarah Jane Pierce Burdine died on 30 January 1878 after giving birth
to Sarah A. Burdine. Sarah Jane is buried in Smith Cemetery, Newton
County, Arkansas.
Nathaniel Burdine married (2) Emeline Peoples on 6 October 1887 in
Newton County. They separated in 1888.They divorced in 1912.
No children from this marriage
Believe Emeline was daughter of William and Sarah Peoples

Nathaniel Burdine's Civil War Pension No. was 381, 474 and 665,420.
He was receiving $72 a month when he died (which wasn't bad income
for 1924.
Nathaniel Burdine died on 3 My 1924 in Newton County and is buried in
Smith Cemetery at Vendor, Arkansas.
