FLOODs\FLUDs TO AMERICA

Kinfolks
by Evelyn Flood

The name FLUDD is of Welsh origin and has been traced back to
the twelfth century RIRID VLAIDD of Salop(Shropshire England,
the Earl of Penlyn.
One of Ririd Vlaidd's descendants was SIR THOMAS FLUDD (1545-1607)
of Milgate House Parish of Berstad,Kent,England who was knighted by
Queen Elizabeth I.
SIR THOMAS FLUDD had several sons:
THOMAS FLUDD; NICHOLAS FLUDD; WILLIAM FLUDD; JOHN FLUDD;
ROBERT FLUDD, M.D. and PHILLIP FLUDD.
Have three books on the very earliest Fluds\Floods
You can read some of my Flood\Flud messages on the
Flood\Flud Genforum.com

JOHN FLUDD ( son of Sir Thomas) was father of RICHARD FLUDD who
migrated to Drogheda, Ireland about 1645 where the name was
Anglicized to FLOOD.
So the Floods of Ireland are distantly related to John Flud\Flood of
Virginia.
The Floods\Fluds evolved from Ririd Vlaidd, the twelfth century
Welshman of Salop (Shropshire England, the Earl of Penlyn.

So the next time you are wondering if that Flood is related to that
Flood (Flud to Flud), think back to the twelfth century.
Have a hard time convincing the Fluds and Floods of Arkansas that
they are all related somehow. Why even in my husband's family,
one brother spelled his name Flud while another brother spelled the
last name Flood.

Funny tales to tell here:
Our great grandfather SIMON DAVID FLUD died in 1957.
The way I understand it, the four sons (Lee, Howard, Abe, Virgil) who
spelled their last names FlOOD, paid for the tombstone for their
father's grave.
The two sons who spelled their last names FLUD (Willard and Abb), had
the stone carver spell the last name FLUD on the tombstone.

I really did not know how to spell our last name until we filled out
our marriage license....FLOOD.
When we were on a vacation trip in 1968 to visit Ken's grandparents,
Simon David FLUD and Hester Hosannah RICKETTS FLUD, one of our
daughters had an autograph book in which she had relatives sign
their names.
Hester and Simon signed their names as FLUD.

Later on, after starting my FLOOD research, I sent for our great-
grandfather George W FLOOD's Civil War Pension record. He was always
called "Uncle Wash" by the many people who lived near him. This was
a term of endearment shown to older, respected people.
George had always signed his last name as FLUD.
He had served in the First Arkansas Cavalry, enlisting at age 19.
He served until the close of the Civil War in 1865.
When 1890 rolled around and it was time for him to sign up for his
Civil War Pension, he filled out the forms for his Civil War Invalid
Pension and sent them to Washington, D.C.
The Government wrote back and asked him why he signed his name FLUD.
The Union Army recruiting officer who signed him up for the Cavalry,
had spelled the last name as FLOOD.
I have a copy of the hand written letter George W Flood wrote back
to the Government. Up until 1890 he had signed his name as FLUD.
So thinking he had been misspelling his name all along, he changed
the spelling of his last name to FLOOD. And from then on, George
spelled his last name FLOOD.
Have land papers where George W Flood's father Nathaniel signed his last name as Nathaniel FLUD.
I actually had one genealogist accuse me of changing the last name
to FLOOD myself.Not so.
So you Fluds and Floods out there who are reading this tidbit, should
know this.
Half of our kinfolks spell it FLUD while half spell it FLOOD.
It could be spelled "Overfluden" or "Unenduncheon" or whatever.
How would you spell it in Spanish?

NOTE:
Have much more information on the Flood\Flud families.
If you don't see their names in this story, write me an E-mail
Will gladly EXCHANGE information with you

NICHOLAS FLUDD (son of Sir Thomas Fludd) was the father of
JOHN FLUDD,the first FLUDD to America.
JOHN FLUDD came to America from England in May 1611 to Jamestown,
Virginia on the ship "The Swann". The ship left England in December of
1610 and arrived in May 1611.
He was the first FLUDD to America.

John was "removed" from England for some unknown reason.
The English had the habit of sending people to the "New Land"
and emptying their "debtors prisons"(yes, you went to prison if you
couldn't pay your debts). Many of the prisons in England also
held people who were in prison for stealing bread or pepper.
John Fludd was approximately 18 years old. For whatever reason he
was "removed" from England, we do not know

John was known as COL. JOHN FLOOD in Virginia.
He became an interpreter for the Indians and was paid for his services
with tobacco grown in Virginia. He became a wealthy planter.

COL. JOHN FLOOD (Fludd)of Millgate,County Kent,England and County Surrey,
Virginia (ca 1592 to 1658) married the widow Mrs. WILLIAM FINCH
(Margaret) ca 1624 and they had :
(1)WILLIAM FLOOD, born 1625

(2)JOHN FLOOD (ca1627-ca 1672 who married ?(unknown).
Issue:
i:JOHN FLOOD (he died 1678)who married MARY CREEDE.
ii:JANE FLOOD , who married in 1667 to THOMAS LANE
iii:ELIZABETH FLOOD, who married:
(1) THOMAS KING (he died 1679) and ELIZABETH FLOOD KING then
married :
(2) in 1680 to NICHOLAS SMITH (d1719).

(3)CAPT.THOMAS FLOOD, (ca 1629? to ca1677), married and had at least
one child!:
CAPT. THOMAS FLOOD (ca1651?-1718)
who married ca 1672 to ANN ROSE (d1728)

(4) MARY FLOOD(ca1635? ca 1678)who married four times:
(No.1)to RICHARD BLUNT ca 1655; one son THOMAS BLUNT
(No.2)to CHARLES FORD 1657 (no children)
(No.3)to JOHN WASHINGTON 1658; one son, Richard Washington
(1659-1724)
(No.4) to HENRY BRIGGS in 1661; five children

COL.JOHN FLOOD married (2) FORTUNE JORDAN.
By FORTUNE JORDAN, COL. JOHN FLOOD had:
(5) JANE FLOOD (ca1639-1669) who married in 1665 to
JOHN CARY (1635-1701) and they had two children:
(a) THOMAS CARY (1667-1716) married ESTHER HUDSON

(b) MARY CARY (1669-1732) who married:
(1) (?) YOUNG and MARY CARY YOUNG then married:
(2) NATHANIEL HARRISON (1677-1727).

(6) WALTER FLOOD (1641-1722) married ca 1677 ANN BROWNE
(ca 1661-1727).
My understanding is Walter was sent back to England for schooling.
He returned to America. Have not researched Walter as yet.

There is a gap here from Virginia to the Carolinas and am presently
trying to tie in the North Carolina Floods to the Virginia Floods.
I am trying to connect our John Flood\Flud born ca 1790 of North
Carolina who married Rebecca (last name unknown but possibly MAYO)
about 1806 in what I believe to be Pitt County, North Carolina.

There are those out there who do not go along with this rendition
of the Flood\Flud Families. But this is the story as I know it.
One would have to examine the old documents themselves to arrive at
different theories. There are always skeptics who will question this
information.
Genealogy changes all the time as new clues are discovered. So read
and discover for yourself. Do some researching on your own.

John and Rebecca FLUD\FLOOD were parents of:
(1)NATHANIEL FLOOD born 1807 North Carolina(our side) who married
Mary Polly Jones in 1832 in St. Francois County, Missouri.
Nathaniel Flood enlisted in the Union Army at age 56.
He was a blacksmith.
He enlisted in July 1863 in the Second Arkansas Cavalry.
In October 1865 he died from dysentery in the Springfield, Missouri
Army Hospital. He had been gathering fodder for the horses and became
ill from heat exhaustion. After his death, his widow Mary Polly Jones
Flood signed for his Civil War Pension.
The recruiting officer had not filled out Nathan's papers.
Nathaniel had not been mustered in to the Service.
If the officer had done this, we would know exactly where Nathaniel
Flood was born.
To date I am not sure where in the Carolinas that Nathaniel Flud
was born.

Below is a picture of the tombstone of Nathaniel Flood, our third
great grandfather, who is buried in the National Cemetery at
Springfield, Missouri. Have visited there two times. It is a well-
kept cemetery just out of Springfield, Missouri

<

Nathaniel Flud's Civil War tombstone in National Cemetery at
Springfield, Missouri.Tombstone is in the Arkansas Section near the front gate.

Found one place where a John Flut (spelled this way) married a
Rebecca Mayo in North Carolina.
I tend to believe maybe Pitt County,North Carolina was where they
may have been from.
But on one census one child said he was born in North Carolina,
then another in Carolina and yet another in Tennessee.
There were lots of Fluds in South Carolina.

I found father JOHN FLOOD in Madison County, Missouri in 1830, the
county next to St. Francois County.

(2)JOHN L FLUD, who married Maranda GILMORE in Arkansas ca 1836.

(3)DAVID FLUD, who married Susannah RHOADES(RHODE?) in Madison County,
Missouri in 1830s.

(4)ELIZABETH FLOOD who married DAVID JONES, JR. in Madison County,
Missouri in 1833. Have copy of the marriage license.

(5) JAMES FLUD who married SARAH STEVENS HALLUM and CAROLINE PEOPLES.
in Arkansas.
This branch of the FLUD family still has descendants living in the
Newton County, Arkansas area.
One descendant, Tommy Flud, is a School Superintendant in Newton
County.

(6) UNKNOWN DAUGHTER

Nathan and Mary Polly Jones Flood had their first two children in
St.Francois County, Missouri;
Nancy Jane and John Kink Flud were born there.
Have Civil War Pension records for the following Floods\Fluds: Nathaniel Flood, John Kink Flud, William Riley Flud , George W Flood
and David Flood

Found John Flood\Flud and Rebecca Flood in Carroll County, Arkansas in 1836 to about 1838.
Believe 1838 was the year John Flood, Sr. died in Carroll County.
He paid taxes in Carroll County,Arkansas and belonged to the
Crooked Creek Church there in Carroll County,Arkansas.
Please read the 'Kinfolks Story' on "Early Crooked Creek Baptist
Church Records" on my website.
Rebecca (unknown maiden name)Flood was alive in 1850 in Newton
County,Arkansas. She is probably one of the first burials in the
Smith Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas.

Do know that John and Rebecca Flood\Flud had sons Nathan(our side);
John L Flud ; David Flud ;James Flud and two daughters?
Believe one daughter was Elizabeth Flood who married
David Jones Junior in Madison County, MO. in 1832.
(Yes, cousins married cousins back then and brother and sister
married brother and sister, making double cousins.).
David Jones, Jr. married Elizabeth Flood.
Nathan Flood married Mary Polly Jones.
This David Jones Junior (I believe) is Mary Polly Jones Flood's brother.
Their father was David Jones and was with them
in Carroll County,Arkansas in early 1830's tax records.
Simon Jones of Newton County is also believed (by me) to be brother of
Mary Polly Jones Flood.
David Flud married Susannah Rhodes ca 1832 in Madison County,
near St.Francois Co.Missouri but could never find
him after that date.
Did, however, find a William Flud living in Missouri in a later census.

Have Nathan, David, John"Kink" and George W Flood's Civil War
Military and Pension Records.
Service records are a great source of information on families.
Land records are also another good source.

Nathan and Mary Polly Jones Flood were the parents of:
(1)NANCY JANE FLOOD BRAY BURDINE (have extended family information).

George W. Flood and Rachel Caroline Harris (our side)were the parents
of: Emeline Flood Brasel, John Flood(twin to Emeline died as an infant);
William Riley Flud; James C Flood; Nancy Jane Flood Wells Chamberlin;
Simon David Flud (our side) who married Hester Hosannie Ricketts;
Mary Ova (Polly)Flood Taylor; Joseph H Flood; Ulysses S Grant Flud;
Lafayette Franklin Flud; and Washington Hoyle Flood.

Washington Hoyle Flood's widow, Gladys Kent Flood still lives in
Newton County,Arkansas. A son Charles Flood still lives on the Flood
land that was settled by the Floods when they came to White
Township in what was then Carroll County,Arkansas in 1836(now
Newton County). So you might say the land has been in the Flood
name for approximately 164 years.
NOTE:Gladys Kent Flood is now deceased.

Note that brothers spelled their last names differently.
George W and Rachel Harris Flood were also the adopted parents
of ARTIE BARKER METCALF and WILLIAM NICHOLS who married his first
cousin MARY ELIZABETH"Lizzie" PIERCE.
WILLIAM NICHOLS was actually the son of George W Flood and Martha
Nichols. William and his family moved to Eufaula, Oklahoma.

my beloved father-in-law, Lee Chester Flood who married
Walcie Smith. Lee and Walcie were parents of Alice Flood Boni;
Imogene Flood (died at age 9);
Kenneth Flood(my husband); Paul D Flood and Charlene Flood Ronnie.
Only Alice Flood Boni is living at this date.

This is the BRIEF history of the Flood\Flud families as I know it.
Mr. Charles Patterson of Virginia was good enough to share his early
Flood research with me and I am greatly indebted to him.
You can visit Flood GenForum and read the many Flood messages that
I placed there and exchanged information with others.
Mr. Patterson has written four books on the Flood\Flud Families.
He went to England and actually researched books there.
Mr.Patterson's books can be read the the LDS Family History Center in
Salt Lake City, Utah.

I have much more Flood information on Family Group Sheets, but wanted
to at least give a brief outline of some of the Floods\Fluds.
If you don't see your family mentioned, contact me and we can
EXCHANGE information OR I can post it to this site.
So much information, and such little time to write about it.
