COOPER-DOOLIN STORY

I sent this story to the Newton County, Arkansas Times Newspaper
It was printed in the Times on 26 August 1999

JAMES C. COOPER was son of Isaac and Narcissa Jane Ritchey Cooper.
He was born 28 March l840 in DeKalb Co. Alabama.

on 28 September 1859, James was married to Telitha Doolin in Newton
County, Arkansas by Rev. Stephen Rowland in Limestone Valley.
The birthdates of their children are from James' Civil War Pension
record.

James Cooper served in Co. C, lst Arkansas Infantry and Co. D, Second
Arkansas Cavalry(Union) during Civil War. I have his Civil War
Pension record.
James drew Civil War Pension Record No. 679066,
while Telitha drew Widow's Pension Record No. 881,357.

James Cooper died 21 March l9l9 in Harrison, Arkansas of cancer, per
his Death Certificate. He was in the real estate business in Boone
County, Arkansas. He is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery (Boone Co).
James and Telitha Doolin Cooper lived in Watkins(Boone Co.) in l898;
in Western Grove,Ark. l899; in Bellefonte in Boone Co.Ark in l904; in
Harrison (Boone Co.)l9l2 to l929.
Telitha Doolin Cooper died in 1929 at Harrison, Arkansas.She is also
buried in Rosehill Cemetery.
TELITHA ANN DOOLIN was born about 1837\1840 in Arkansas.
Their children were:
1.Narcissa Jane Cooper, born 4 July 1860. Nothing further
known.I don't believe she married.
2.Mary Ann Cooper, born 11 April 1862. Died before 1870.
3.Loucinda Elizabeth Cooper, born 11 Jan 1863.Died before 1880?
4.John Henry Cooper, born 15 July 1868. He married Luler Wheeler
on 5 Sept 1886 in Newton Co. AR.
Their children as shown on l900 Newton Co.Ark. Census, Prarie
Township were:
(a) Sherman Cooper born l887
(b) James Cooper born l889
(c) Thomas Cooper born l892
(d) Bessee Cooper born l893
(e) Harms Cooper born l896
(f) Rebecca Cooper born l897
(g) Josie Cooper born l900
5.Cresia Levina Cooper, born 6 July 1870. She married W. E.
Wasson on 8 June 1890 in Boone Co. AR.
6. Nancy Devina Cooper, born 3 July 1874. She married
P.M. Wilson on 8 June 1890 in Boone Co. AR.
7.William Harmon "Flipp" Cooper, born 31 August 1876.
He married Shabie Jane McMahan on 3 June 1894 in Boone Co. AR.
William Harmon Cooper died in 1906 in Whitehall, Montana. I have
more information on his family. Also have pictures.
Shabie Jane MacMahan Cooper died in 1939 at Bozeman, Montana.
At the time of her death she still had sisters living in
Arkansas.
I just received this information about William Harmon Cooper Family.
William Harmon and Shabie Jane MacMahan Cooper's children were
Benjamin Coy Cooper born 1895 at Harrison,Arkansas;
Bonnie Pearl Cooper; Elnora Cooper and Covey Ann Cooper.

The 1850 Johnson County,Arkansas census states Telitha Doolin was born
in Arkansas.
Her father was Michael Doolin born 1808 in Logan Co.Kentucky.
Michael Doolin's parents were John Doolin and Cathy "Creaty" Rowe.
Michael Doolin's land in Johnson County, Arkansas was as follows:
Section 28, Township 12North, Range 21West (40 acres) February 1860
Section 18, Township 12North, Range 21West (40 Acres) October 1860
Michael was a juror in Johnson County, Arkansas in 1846 and 1848.
The family lived in the Piney Township of Johnson County in 1850,
and the Pilot Rock Township of Johnson County in 1860.
Michael Doolin died in Johnson County, Arkansas in 1865.
He married twice. He first married Mary Stephens in 1829 in Butler
County,Kentucky.
(Mary was born about 1810 in Butler County, Kentucky.) Mary Stephens
Doolin died between 1848 and 1856 in Johnson County, Arkansas.
Their children were:
(1)Margaret Doolin born 1830 in Madison County, Missouri and
married John T Cooksey, Jr.about 1846 in Johnson County, Arkansas.
(2)Barton Doolin born 1832 in Madison County, Missouri married
Elizabeth Self ?
He is said to have moved to Texas.
I have record of six children for Barton: Marion; Andrew; Mariah;
Jasper; George and Sterling Doolin.
Barton Doolin had Cash Entry for land on 1 July 1859 in Johnson County,
Arkansas in Section 28, Township 12 North, Range 21 West, consisting
of 40 acres. They were on the 1860 and 1870 Johnson County, Arkansas
Census at Pilot Rock Township.
(3)Melinda B Doolin b l834 in Madison County, Missouri.
It is said she married Mr. Robinson about 1851 and they were the
parents of Narcissus Jane Robinson who married Squire Essex.
Melinda Doolin then married Mr. Woodward and they had a daughter
Mary Ann Woodward. Melinda then married Daniel E Hamm about May 1856.
They are on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Newton County,Arkansas Census
records. Daniel E Hamm had been married previously to (1) Polly Ann
Daniels and (2) Elizabeth Harrison. He had children Nancy; William
Jasper and Mary A Hamm.
I show Malinda Doolin's children to be:
1.Narcissus Jane Robinson who married Squire Essex in 1868.
2.Mary A Woodward (nothing further known).
3.Sarah E Ham who married Joseph H Sparks\Slape? in 1873.
4.Martha Emeline Ham who married William F Gillian\Gilliam? in 1877.
5.Sterling Price Ham who died in 1875, drowning as he rode across
Piney Creek to round up cattle.
6.Ulyses G Hamm who married Winnie Casey and Pearl Breedlove.
7.Ellender Frances Ham who married Austin Casey and Atlas Smith.
Melinda Doolin Ham died in 1896(1892?) and is buried in Lone Hill
Cemetery, Newton County,Ark.
(4)Telitha Ann Doolin married James Cooper as mentioned earlier.
(5)Jemima Doolin born 1840 in Johnson County,Arkansas. She
Married William H Pruett in 1859 in Johnson Co.Ark.
(6)John Doolin born 1845 in Arkansas(no further information)
(7) Mary M Doolin born 1848 in Arkansas. She supposedly married
Morris Adkins in 1867 in Newton County but I found no marriage record.

The father Michael Doolin then married Artemisa Beller on 17 January
1856 in Johnson County, Arkansas(per marriage record). His children by
second wife were:
(8) William "Bill"Doolin born 1858 in Johnson County,Ark.
Bill married Edith Ellsworth on 14 March 1893 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma
Territory.
Bill Doolin rode briefly with the Dalton Gang but later formed his own
Doolin gang which operated mostly in Oklahoma but did range up into
Arkansas and Kansas.
The Doolin Gang was notorious for robbery, killings and horse thieving

Marshall Bill Tilghman arrested Bill Doolin when Bill went to Eureka
Springs, Arkansas to seek the healing treatment of the hot springs
there to ease the pain of his rheumatism. Bill was returned to the
Guthrie, Oklahoma jail.

Bill Doolin and several others escaped from the jail.
He planned on taking his wife and son and starting a new life.
On 24 Aug 1896 Bill Doolin was shot and killed by Deptuy Marshal
Heck Thomas in Lawson(Lawton?),Oklahoma Territory as he attempted
to leave with his family.
Doolin had married Edith Ellsworth in March of 1893 in Kingfisher,
Oklahoma Territory.They had one son, Jay Doolin.
Edith Ellsworth Doolin later remarried to Samuel Meek and son
Jay assumed his stepfather's name, living in Ponca City,
Oklahoma.

(9) Tennessee Doolin born 1859 in Johnson County,Arkansas(no further
information).

In his book "New Ozark Cousins" ,Bud Phillips speaks of the Doolin
family.
He tells about the father of Mary Stephens Doolin (Jackey Bowman
Stephens)who lived in what was then Cape Girardeau County, but later
Madison County, Missouri.

On 13 Dec 1820, Mr. Stephens, his wife Elizabeth Taylor Stephens,and
two small sons were murdered by a man named John Duncan. Duncan was
later hanged for the crime.
Daughters Mary and Bethsadi Stephens were left orphans by this murder.
It is said that Bethsadi Stephens married Alexander Hampton. The land
inherited by these two orphan girls was sold when they left the county.
