CATHERINE HEFLEY CAMPBELL JOHNSON STORY

Kinfolks
by Evelyn Flood
Sent this story to the Newton County Times 5 April 1998
Published in the Newton County, Arkansas Times on 10 April 1998.
I have updated this since the original writing as I have discovered
new information.
Excerpts are taken from story "Across The Plains In '57" as told by
Nancy Campbell Lowell, daughter of Peter and Catherine Hefley Campbell.

On 1 April 1857 another party of pioneers started West from Carroll
County, Arkansas. In one of these wagons was Peter C (Cox?) Campbell
and his family:
Wife Catherine Hefley Campbell; a baby son Richard C two years old;
a daughter Lucinda Ellen three years old and a daughter Nancy A,
four years old.

This Peter C Campbell, born 29 June 1824 (tombstone) was son of
Richard C and Nancy Ann Berry Campbell of Carroll County, Arkansas.
Catherine Hefley Campbell ,born 25 December 1832 in Tennessee, was
the daughter of Phillip Hefley and Hannah Sharp, and a sister to
John Bailey and Daniel Hefley.

The wagon train proceeded slowly through the Cherokee Nation. Here the
wagons lay in wait one month until joined by an additional fifty wagons
from Missouri. This combined wagon train was one of the largest trains
ever to cross the Western Plains.

The wagons ambled on and on, day by day.It was one of the rules that
the man driving the lead wagon in the train, should be responsible
for choosing the camp site for the night.

Arriving at a place near Salt Lake City, Peter Campbell and a cousin
had a disagreement about choosing the camp site and as a result,
Campbell left the train. He, with only two other wagons, started on
alone. The other wagons moved on to Mountain Meadows, Utah. Everyone
of these brave and hardy people were massacred, except 17 small
children, five days after their separation from the other wagons.
This little train of three wagons that had left the main train earlier
made their way to Carson Valley, Nevada. Here again they divided, two
wagons going over the mountains by way of Truckee through Dutch Flat
and on to Trinity County,California.
The Campbell family alone took a trail which lead through Placerville,
California.

Peter C Campbell had been a teacher and had a brother living in
Marysville, California. I believe this brother was George Campbell,
who was later found in 1870 Boone County, Arkansas Census records.
Peter's brother had a store and wanted Peter to come West and assist
him with his business.

The family reached Brighton (near Sacramento, California) on the first
day of October after six months travel. They stayed at Brighton for
one month. There was still the trip from Brighton to Marysville ahead,
but they would be greatly disappointed. Peter's brother had heard that
all the people with the wagon train were massacred at Mountain Meadows
and decided to go back to Arkansas and left three days before the
Peter Campbell family's arrival.

Found the Richard C and Nancy Ann Campbell family on the 1850 Carroll
County,Arkansas census (Jefferson township).
Richard C Campbell,age 45, born N.C. and wife(Nancy A) Ann ,age 44,
born in North Carolina.
Their children listed were:
Peter (H?), age 24, born in Alabama(father in this story).
Eli age 20,born in Alabama
William J age 18,born Tennessee
John M(Milt), age 16, born Arkansas
Allen H age 12, born Arkansas
Missouri A, age 8, born Arkansas
Berry M age 6, born Arkansas.
and Archibald Y Campbell,age 3, born Arkansas.
Mary ASHER, age 19, born Tenn. was with the family.

A son George Neal Campbell, age 23, born Alabama with wife Margaret
Ann, age 18,born Tennessee, lived nearby.
George Neal Campbell is also found on the 1860 Carroll County Census
and the 1870, 1880 Boone County, Arkansas Census records.

Richard C Campell had purchased a land bounty from Darling Brown
(Cherokee War-Capt. Derrick's Company Georgia Volunteers) in Township
17 North, Range 20 West in Carroll County,Arkansas.

Richard C and Nancy Ann Campbell were found on the 1860 Carroll County,
Arkansas census and then on the 1870 Boone County, Arkansas Census
in Jefferson Township, Mt. Pleasant.

Continuing on with the story of the Campbell family's trip to
California in 1857:
Seeing that his brother had gone, Peter Campbell attempted to make a
living by working on farms wherever he could. Catherine helped by
doing housework for others, taking her children along with her.

After one year in Marysville, California, the family moved on to
Sacramento by wagon and ox team. In the California Flood of 1861,
Peter Campbell cut wood and peddled it to the people by means of a
row boat. They settled east of the city across the American River.
From there they moved on to a farm at Folsom, California. Their
children attended school near Sylvan Corners which is near what is now
Citrus Heights,California.

Peter C Campbell died 25 February 1865\1868?(the year is hard to read
on the tombstone).Believe the card in the cemetery sexton's office
gave year as 1868.
I visited the Sylvan Cemetery on a 103 degree, hot afternoon about
15 minutes before the cemetery closed and tried to take a few pictures.
Sylvan Cemetery is located 14 miles north of Sacramento on the highway
leading to Roseville at the junction of Greenback Lane and Auburn
Roads. Had to leave the cemetery as it was closing, so was unable
to finish taking photos.
Peter's headstone is a spiral whitish granite and is badly pitted at
the bottom. As it sits near the edge of the cemetery (Plot 1B), it
looks like vandals may have chipped away some of the marble. It is
hard to read the date and age at time of his death. There was a verse
at the bottom of the stone that I was unable to read. Wish I had had
some chalk to fill in the letters so my snapshot would have turned out
better. Will go back and try again, for this verse may tell us more
about him. Or I will try a "rubbing" so the letters will come out.
I will put a picture of his tombstone in the CEMETERIES Section
of my website. So please check back later.
