AMOS BURDYNE STORY

Amos Burdyne was born in 1780 in Culpepper County,Virginia, the son of John Burdyne and Elizabeth "Betty" Dicken\s.
John Burdyne was the son of Richard and Catherine Tanner Burdyne.

Amos married Jennie Davidson(Davison) 26 September 1803 in Washington County, Kentucky.

Amos Burdyne and Jennie Davidson's Marriage Bond

Thank you Carol Burdine for sending this copy to me

Jennie Davidson (Davison)Burdyne died in 1832 in St Charles County,Missouri of cholera. She was a rather heavyset woman while Amos was said to be a man of small stature.

Just recently received information that Amos Burdine may have been in the Missouri Militia in War of 1812. Shall send for these records and see what information I can find.
Check back for further information

The 1810 St. Charles County, Missouri Census listed three sons.
When the Madrid Earthquakes hit in Missouri in 1811\12, it is said Amos sons fired guns at the roof of their cabin, thinking there were Indians attacking, completely ruining the cabin roof.
So we know Amos had sons old enough to fire guns

It is said that AMOS BURDYNE had a daughter:
(1) ELIZABETH BURDYNE who married GEORGE PIERCE.
She was in a land settlement case in St. Charles or Lincoln County, Missouri early on.
Do not know where she fits in the order of children, but probably number 1 daughter.
Probably named for Amos Burdyne's mother Elizabeth "Betty" Dicken\s.

In further research, have found a GEORGE PIERCE who had married ELIZABETH BURDINE (daughter of Amos Burdyne and Jennie Davison).
This Pierce family was in Lincoln County, Missouri in September 1833 with the following children under 14years:
(1)Susan Pierce
(2)Margaret Jane Pierce
(3)Nancy Pierce
(4)Polly Pierce
(5)James Pierce
There was a Bill of Sale from George Pierce to Landor Lindsey, dated 28 Sept 1835 or 1838
The land was sold Feb 1837. Things were sold in 1835
There is a newspaper clipping dated 5Dec1836 on the land

(2)AMOS BURDYNE Jr. probably born in Kentucky.
Nothing else known but was found mentioned in ca1830 in St.Charles County,Missouri as owning 100 acres.

(3)BENJAMIN BURDYNE Nothing further known.

(4)WILLIAM BURDINE born 1809 in Kentucky(probably Washington County) He married ELIZABETH VESTERMAN? WINCHESTER,NEAL, date unknown.
NOTE: The early census shows that Amos Burdyne had three sons and one daughter, so that fits into the above four children.

There is evidence that Elizabeth Vesterman? Winchester may have married No.3, LYTEL NEAL but divorced him in St. Louis, Missouri Court
She had several Winchester and Neal children when William Burdine and Elizabeth married ca 1843, probably in Calhoun County, Illinois.
These WINCHESTER children were:
Thomas Winchester,
Sarah Angeline Winchester,
Harriett A Winchester,
The NEAL children were:
Frank NEAL, and
Phoebe NEAL.

William and Elizabeth Vesterman? Winchester Neal known Burdine children were:
i:Nathaniel Burdine, born 11 Nov 1844 Eniver Island, Calhoun County Illinois who married:
(1) SARAH JANE PIERCE in 1867, and
(2) EMELINE PEOPLES in 1887. Both marriages were in Newton County, Arkansas. Sarah Jane Pierce Burdine died in 1878 in Newton County Arkansas.
He divorced Emeline.
Have Nathaniel Burdine's Civil War Pension Record.

ii: Canzada Burdyne, born 1849. She married THOMAS SHATSWELL in 1868 in Newton County, Arkansas. They were divorced soon after. Newton County, Arkansas Chancery Court records show this divorce.
I don't know what happened to Canzada Burdine Shatswell. Perhaps she went to Illinois to be with her mother?

William Burdine died in 1866 in Newton County, Arkansas and is buried in Smith Cemetery,Vendor (LogHall),Arkansas. His grave was "lost".

(6) JAMES "CRITTER" BURDINE born 10 Sept 1813 in Missouri-probably St Charles County.
He married Nancy Jane Flood Bray ca 1859 in Newton Co.Ark.
He died 12 April 1901 and is buried in Smith Cemetery, Vendor Arkansas.

(7) MARY "POLLY" BURDINE born 1818 in Missouri. She married JOHN LINDSEY PIERCE of Lincoln County,Missouri on 26 Nov 1834 in St.Charles County,Missouri. The date and place of her death is unknown. She was alive in 1894 in Newton County because she applied for her son William Pierce's Civil War Pension record and had a homestead around this date.

(8) NANCY BURDINE born 1820 in Missouri. She married: (1)JACOB JACKSON on 6 July 1837 in St.Charles County,Missouri.
She divorced him for desertion. Amos Burdyne appeared in St. Louis, Missouri Court as her "best friend" at the time of her divorce.

(9)JANE BURDINE born 1820 Missouri. She married ALLEN B LUCAS on 19 April 1835 in St.Charles County,Missouri.

I found Amos Burdyne living with the Allen Lucas family in 1850 in Ozark County,Missouri, Amos aged 70. This is the last place I have seen mention of Amos Burdyne. Date and place of death are unknown.

The Lucas family lived in Marion County, Arkansas at different times too as Allen Lucas is on the Marion County, Arkansas Tax Lists for 1842-1845 and 1847 & 1851 to 1853.
I have more Lucas information.

(10) PHEBE BURDINE born July 1825 in Missouri.
She married DANIEL RISLEY, born 1808 in Kentucky.

Daniel RISLEY family was on the 1860 Newton County, Arkansas Census in Prairie Township, Visit 188
Daniel, age 52 (b:1808) in KY
Phebe, age 31 (b:1829 in MO)
? (unreadible), age 11 (female),born in AR
Margaret, age 9, born AR
Thos?, age 6, born AR
Sarah, age 5, born AR
? (unreadible) age 3 (male) born AR
? (unreadible) age 5/12 (female) born AR

Found Phebe on the 1880 Newton County, Arkansas Census and again on the 1900 Newton County, Arkansas Census in Polk Township, Visit 96, living with her son-in-law James C Lively and his wife Margaret J Risley Lively.

(11) JOSEPH BURDINE born 6 May 1826 in Missouri. He married MARTHA ANN PICKETT ca 1852, probably Newton County, Arkansas.

(12) AGNES BURDINE birthdate and death date unknown. She married ANDREW ASHLEY of Dyer, Missouri on 10 May 1842, No.223, in St Charles County,Missouri.
She possibly may have married a Mr. RISLEY.

(13)AGATHA(Agnes?) EGG BURDINE b 1830 in Missouri.
Date and place of death unknown. She is thought to have married
(1)DAVID BURHAM and possibly(2) Mr. RISLEY.
I found her on a Newton County,Arkansas census 1860 in White Township Visit #381 with children:
Susannah Risley age 14;
Benjamin Burcham age 7 and
George N. Risley age six months.

When Amos Burdyne lived in Missouri he was there in 1811 during the New Madrid Earthquake and it was said that when the house began to shake, he and his sons fired their guns through the ceiling of their home, thinking Indians were attacking. So Amos had sons old enough to fire guns, so Amos Junior and possibly Benjamin Burdyne must have been old enough to have fired guns. With son William Burdine, born 1809 (it is doubtful he could fire a gun if he were only a couple of years old).
This leads me to believe that Amos had two older sons
