by Evelyn Flood

Published in the Newton County Times Newspaper 12 February 1998
in my "Kinfolks" column.
Am adding updates to that story.
Thanks Sue Byrne of Bristow, Oklahoma for your article on
William Riley Flood that you sent into the Newton County Times
Newspaper some time ago.

Charlotte Blanchard and I visited your Dad and Mother, Bill and
Susie Flood in Bristow in 1988.

Your Dad, Lawden "Bill" Flood was son of the Virgil Taylor and
Vera Lee Guinn Flood. Virgil Taylor Flood was son of William Riley
Flud and Louisana Brasel Flud.

Lawden "Bill" Flood, World War II Medals

This William Riley Flud was the son of George W Flood and Rachel
Caroline Harris Flood. Spelled Flud and sometimes Flood.
This William Riley Flud was born 27 May 1869 in Newton County.
He married Louisiana Brasel on 6 Mar 1890 in Newton County.
Their children were: Virgil, Jarusha, Walter, John Sherman, Norsisa
Alabama, Hallie Mellisa, George Frank, Iva Wilma, Charles Carroll,
Ruby, Lessie Marvel and Vera Prudence Flud.

Want to share this photo of the first three children of
William Riley and Louisana BRASEL FLUD. This picture was taken in
Newton County, Arkansas ca 1898.

Virgil on left, Walter in center and Jarusha Flud on right
Walter was born 1895 and died in 1898

We took pictures and recorded your Dad Bill's thoughts.
We were very proud of your Dad's World War II medals as I am sure
all of you are.
The pictures turned out good.
Will be putting those photos on my website before long.

Best I remember, your brother Dusty FLOOD was named for a famous
baseball player, Dusty RHODES ?
How is your brother ?
Have lots more information on your family.
Thanks again for writing to the Newton County Times.

There were actually two WILLIAM RILEY FLOOD\FLUDs born in Newton
County, Arkansas.

But there was one other William Riley FLUD
who was the eldest son of JOHN LEMUEL FLUD and Maranda
GILMORE(Levi Gilmore's daughter).
Their children were : MARY ANN FLUD BREWER TORIX
MALINDA FLUD
WILLIAM RILEY FLUD (this story is about him).
LEVI F FLUD and
NANCY "Aunt Nan" FLUD BOLIN NEWBERRY

JOHN LEMUEL FLUD married secondly to SALLY NICHOLS ca 1860 and
they had John Lemuel "Honey John" FLUD who married Edie Isabelle
FLUD (daughter of John "Kink"FLUD and EMELINE COOPER)of the
NATHANIEL FLOOD side).

Mary Ann FLUD married Jesse BREWER and Peter TORIX.

Levi FLUD married Elizabeth BOWMAN, daughter of
Jacob BOWMAN and Mahala SUTTON.
After Levi FLUD died Elizabeth BOWMAN FLUD married John W AGEE.

Nancy "Aunt Nan" FLUD married John E. BOLIN in 1870 and
George W NEWBERRY in 1874 in Newton County.
John E Bolin married several other times.
George W Newberry died before 1891.
Found Nancy Flud Bolin Newberry living on the 1910 Franklin County,
Arkansas Census in Walker Township.
Nancy had had two children but none were living in 1910. This is the
first time I had found her on the census where it stated that she had
children.
She was living next to her nephew LEVI FRANK TORIX.
TORIX, L F head 40 M2 12yrs AR, uknown,unknown

.......Earl son 15 S AR,AR,AR
.......George son 11 S AR,AR,AR,
.......John son 6 S AR,AR,AR,
.......Edward son 2 S AR,AR,AR

Living nearboy was the J M BOWMAN family.
Wonder if they were related somehow to Jacob and Mahala Sutton Bowman?

William Riley"Buck" FLUD was born in 1843 in Newton County,Arkansas.
He married Nancy HENDERSON, daughter of
James E HENDERSON and Martha SMITH (daughter of Jeremiah
and Margaret ARMSTRONG (Byrd?) SMITH.
They were married on 11 January 1864 in Newton County.
Their children were:
(1)Martha J FLUD, born 1865 in Newton County, who married
(1)John W TINNEY 11 Jan 1881 in Conway County, Arkansas.
She had a son JAMES FLUD, born 1879, before her marriage to
John Tinney.
Do not know what happened to her son JAMES FLUD.

Someone contacted me from this family and have more information
to add.
Martha J Flud and John Walter TINNEY had the following children:
(i) Walter Tinney
(ii) Nettie F Tinney, born 1888.
I do not know what happened to Martha's first husband.
Do not know what happened to her son Walter TINNEY nor her daughter
Nettie F Tinney.

Martha J Flud Tinney married
(2)ANDREW JACKSON ROBINSON on 13 June 1897 in Tamaha,
Choctaw Nation Indian Territory.
Andrew was born 10 Jan 1856 in Johnson County, Arkansas.
Andrew Jackson Robinson had been married previously to:
(1) Mary Malinda Bell on 3 Dec 1877 in Scott County, Arkansas.
(2) Ida Smith on 28 February 1892 in Scott County, Arkansas.
Andrew had a son:
SNODEN ROBINSON, born 12 March 1896
Snoden married Bertha REECE in 1919 at Stigler, Oklahoma.
They had 7 daughters and 1 son.
Snoden Robinson died in 1985 at the age of 90 years.
Bertha Reece Robinson died in 1994 at Stigler, Oklahoma.
Andrew Jackson Robinson died on 8 February 1923 at Cass Homestead
in Haskell County, Oklahoma.
After Andrew died, his son Snoden Robinson looked after his stepmother
Martha Jane Flud Tinney Robinson.
She was ill and was on medications.
She did not have money to buy her medications and died as a result
of this. She died 31 July 1929 in Haskell County, Oklahoma.
She is buried in Tamaha Cemetery with no tombstone.

(2)Levi Frank FLUD was born in 1867.

(3)James Edward FLUD was born in 1869.

Does anyone know what became of Levi Frank and James Edward Flud??

William Riley FLUD served in Co. K, First Arkansas Cavalry
(Union Army) during the Civil War.
He served from 7 August 1862 to September 1863.
He was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, blue eyes, brown hair
with dark complexion.
His Civil War Pension application was rejected as he was reported
as "deserted".
I have his Civil War Pension record and these pension
records always give clues about the family and their children.
There is usually a location listed where they lived at different
times, so one can check the records in that area for that time period.
This is where I get about 80% of my family research information.

William Riley FLUD divorced Nancy Henderson Flud in Newton County,
Arkansas about 1880.
He and sons Frank and Eddie were in Conway County, Arkansas in 1880.
I do not know what became of Nancy HENDERSON FLUD after their
divorce.

Bet you are wondering why the two different spellings of FLOOD\FLUD.?
This goes way back and you can read the story of their origin in the
Newton County Family History Book I. Sent this story to the Newton
County Historical Society in 1992 for their book.
The Flood\Flud name is spelled differently
by the same family members (even though they are blood related);
one believes one way and others use the other spelling.
FLOOD is the anglicized version of FLUDD.
The first known FLUDD to America was Col. John FLUDD of the
Jamestown, Virginia colonies ca 1611.
Read "FLOODS\FLUDS TO AMERICA" on my Kinfolks Stories website.

William Riley FLUD married secondly to Mary Elizabeth TINNEY
in June 1881 in Conway County, Arkansas.
Mary was the daughter of Edward TINNEY and Sarah (mnu).
Mary E Tinney was born September 1855 in Polk County, Arkansas.
Found the Edward and Sarah Tinney family on the 1880 Conway County,
Arkansas Census, Visit 264 with children:
Mary E 23; Theo A 21; Sarah A 19, M.S. (f) 11 and Manda Tinney,
age 7.

William and Mary Tinney FLUD had the following children:
(1) JULIA FLUD, born 1881 who married James Henderson in Newton County
Arkansas on 17 September 1896.(see my Newton County Marriage Book E)
They must have divorced.
Julia later married Mr. Pendergraft, unknown date and place.
Julia had two known children:
George and Connie PENDERGRAFT of Odessa,Texas.

(2)NANCY FLUD, born 5 July 1882 who married:
(1) Joe WYNN and,
(2) Dal MORRISON.
Her children were Ted, Frank and Lester WYNN who were last living
in the Hulbert, Oklahoma area.
Nancy had no Morrison children.
Nancy Flud Wynn Morrison died 2 November 1937 and is buried in Bristow,
Oklahoma City Cemetery beside her mother Mary Tinney Flud who also
died in 1937, 5 August 1937.
Charlotte Blanchard and I visited Bristow, Oklahoma in 1988.

Mary Tinney Flud filed for William Riley Flud's Civil War Pension
record but was refused as "first wife was still alive".
So Nancy Henderson Flud was living somewhere, unknown in 1910
Pension was also refused as William Riley Flud had deserted and the
charge of desertion was not removed.

(3)GEORGE THOMAS FLUD born 27 February 1885 at Russellville,
Pope County, Arkansas. George died in 1968 at Hulbert, Oklahoma.
George married:
(1) LENA TINNEY and (2)GLADYS CHEEK about 1925.
Gladys CHEEK FLUD still lives in Hulbert, Oklahoma.
Have talked to her several times on the phone.

George Thomas "Shorty" Flud's children were:
(a)WILLIAM RILEY FLUD who married Marguerite (mnu).
Three children:
Richard Russel Flud
Bob Flud
Billie Louise Flud
The sons were born in Kansas City, Missouri.
Recently met Bob Flud and his brother Richard Flud who stopped
by my home for a visit.
Have noticed his name in the phone book for years but never
contacted him until recently.
I say this is still a small world after all.

(b) GEORGE FLUD who married Ruby (mnu).
George was a World War II Veteran. Was wounded in action.
George died in Kansas City, Missouri in 1987 of cancer.
He was a World War II Veteran.
No children.

(c)LOLA FLUD who married:
NEWT ADDINGTON and
Mr. BECHTELL.

Gladys CHEEK, George Thomas Flud's second wife, was born in
Clinton, Missouri. Her father was M.G. Cheek and her mother was
Ada Emshwiller. George Thomas FLUD and Gladys Cheek children were:

(d) NONA FLUD, born 31 October 1926.
She married a Mr.NEWMAN, Robert NEFF, and
John McKENZIE.
Nona Flud died on 4 December 1989 in Tulsa, Oklahoma of cancer.
Nona's children were:
(1)LARRY NEWMAN and
(2)CONNIE NEWMAN and
(3)THOMAS McKINZIE who died in Vietnam at Cha Lie.
George Thomas and Gladys raised Nona's children

There is a monument at Hulbert, Oklahoma to the Vietnam Veterans on
which Thomas McKinzie's name is inscribed.
His name is also on the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C.

When I talked to Thomas' grandmother Gladys Cheek Flud in
Hulbert,Oklahoma by telephone,
Gladys said she wished she could have been there to hold him in her
arms and comfort him. His grandmother had helped raise him.

(e)EDWARD FLUD who owns FLUD'S DENTAL LAB in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Do not have further information on Edward Flud.

(4) CONNIE FLUD who died young.

(5) AMANDA FLUD born 1892 who is shown on the 1900 Cherokee Nation,
Oklahoma Territory census, Sequoyah County.

William Riley"Buck" Flud died 29 May 1910 near Talequah,Oklahoma and
is probably buried in the Grandview Cemetery near there.
I do not know if he has a military marker on his grave.
